Chapter 674: Chapter 444: Can’t Tell For Now (One more)_1
Night, drawn out.
However, for Jing Chen this night, he did nothing but held Mu Lin, never letting go. He held her tightly, yet it didn’t make her feel uncomfortable in her sleep.
By dawn, the cool air hinted chill while the gentle sunlight spread warmth.
She nestled her little head on comfort of his chest, with signs that she was about to rouse from sleep.
Her beautiful eyelashes fluttered and the next moment, they slowly opened. She blinked her eyes, attempted to lazily stretch, only to realize that she couldn’t budge from his grasp.
She slightly moved her head out of his arms and looked up, only to meet a pair of smiling eyes.
"You’re awake," his voice deep with a touch of huskiness from just waking up.
"Mm," Mu Lin replied instinctively, and asked, "What time is it?" she yawned slightly.
"Just past nine," He casually glanced at the phone laying on the side.
"So late." Mu Lin murmured. It seemed like it had been quite some time since she slept in, "Your arms are so comfortable," so comfortable that she felt like curling in them a little longer, perhaps even getting some more sleep.
"Then just stay here forever. This embrace is only for you." Jing Chen smiled warmly. He looked like a tender man, completely unlike his usual stern military officer demeanor.
"Alright," Mu Lin snuggled into his embrace, her smile light. In this moment, she felt completely relaxed. Or perhaps, she would say, whenever she was with Jing Chen, she felt an ease she couldn’t normally.
The more time they spent together, Mu Lin found herself growing more dependent on Jing Chen.
Whether this was a good thing or not, Mu Lin couldn’t say.
Laughing softly, Jing Chen held her even tighter.
Right now, it seemed like Linlin was becoming more open about her feelings, as well as her affections towards him, becoming more and more evident; all of this, was a good sign for Jing Chen.
Elsewhere.
Xiu Weiqi appeared early in his office, sitting there, staring absent-mindedly at his phone.
To make the call, or not to? But to call?
Two vs one, it looked like he really did want to make that call.
Last night, they ended up interrogating till deep into the night and the information they obtained wasn’t much help, save for a few independent accounts.
The group of wealthy young bloods were likely still in shock from last night’s events, most of them claiming to be clueless.
However, Xiu Weiqi was somewhat relieved that among the dozen bodies, only three were innocent people. The rest were all assassins who infiltrated the group.
He picked up the five silver needles found in the bodies by the medical examiner. But he was told that those five people didn’t die from these needles, but from a lethal poison smeared on the needles.
Both the silver needles and the poison, the only person Xiu Weiqi could think of was Mu Lin.
He couldn’t forget, she was a military doctor, and a highly skilled practitioner of Chinese Medicine. For her, creating such lethal weapons was easy.
Xiu Weiqi’s intuition told him that the murder game last night, the sole police officer must have been no other but Mu Lin. He couldn’t think of anyone else that would be more capable than her. When they captured Fen Xiao last time, Abu didn’t hold back in praising her abilities. After yesterday’s interrogation, he managed to put two and two together and wanted to hear Mu Lin’s side of things to see if she knew who was behind all this. Why target such a large group of young elites? What was the perpetrator’s end game here? He couldn’t figure it out.
Mr. Jing said not to disturb them last night, so is it okay now? Glancing at the clock, it was half past nine, Mu Lin should be awake by now. Military men such as her were usually right on schedule.
With a grit of his teeth, Xiu Weiqi finally dialed Mu Lin’s number.
"Hello?"
The first voice that came from the other end of the line was a man’s low voice, Xiu Weiqi’s first response was... "Mr. Jing." He instinctively blurted out.
"Mm," he replied, "What is it?" his voice tranquil.
Xiu Weiqi was silent for a moment, as if to gather his thoughts before finally uttering a simple sentence, "Mr. Jing, is Ms. Mu Lin there?" He felt like it would be better to deal with Mu Lin directly regarding the case. Mr. Jing wouldn’t intervene... would he?
That worry was quite real for Xiu Weiqi.
Looking down at Mu Lin, who was looking up at him with a look that seemed to be asking him whose call it was, Jing Chen just barely glanced at the name on the screen when he picked up her phone. Xiu Weiqi, the current head of C province, who most likely was calling about last night’s incident.
Mu Lin took the phone from him, "Hello," her voice cool. Xiu Weiqi inexplicably sighed in relief, wiping the cold sweat from his forehead.
Good. Good. He didn’t realize Mr. Jing and Ms. Mu Lin would be together this early.
Even though they were only talking on the phone, Mr. Jing’s presence was still so overwhelming.
He took a deep breath, Xiu Weiqi finally said: "I hope I’m not disturbing you both?" Better to start off with a greeting.
"No," said Mu Lin. "I’m already awake." He simply hadn’t gotten out of bed yet.
That’s good.
After all, he didn’t have the courage to disturb Master Jing’s sleep, but he couldn’t wait to know the truth about the case at hand.
"You want to ask me about what happened last night, don’t you?" Mu Lin did not need him to directly voice his question.
"Yes," Xiu Weiqi replied, "What I primarily want to know is whether you have any idea who is behind the murder last night." His instinct told him that Mu Lin should know.
As expected.
"I do know that," Mu Lin nodded, got out of Jing Chen’s arms, sat up and leaned against the bed, a hint of contemplation in his eyes.
Seeing Mu Lin sit up, Jing Chen sat up as well and pulled him into his embrace, thinking that he might feel more comfortable leaning on him.
Mu Lin smiled and made little adjustments to find a comfortable position before he stopped moving and continued the conversation.
Upon hearing Mu Lin’s words, Xiu Weiqi was delighted, "Really! That’s fantastic."
Mu Lin laughed, "Don’t get too excited too soon." Xiu Weiqi was puzzled, "What do you mean?"
"I think you must have had your suspicions." Suspecting those people, suspecting that they targeted her again this time.
Targeting her, this "pitiful" person.
Xiu Weiqi paused and didn’t deny it. Indeed, he did suspect those people from the organization. What puzzled him was that previously, those people aimed to kill Mu Lin, but the answer he received this time seemed strange.
Given that Mu Lin was a police officer, those people this time were not trying to kill her. Therefore, it may not necessarily be the people from that organization.
"You’re probably right in your thinking," Mu Lin declared, a faint smirk on his lips, "Indeed, it was them, and the one who made the move this time was their top leader. The sole purpose was just to play a game with me." A game resembling a slaughterhouse.
"Just to play a game," Xiu Weiqi murmured, his voice somewhat low. The anger in his heart was almost uncontrollable, and his fist clenched.
A game.
What does a human life mean in their eyes anyway?
With his eyelashes slightly lowered, Mu Lin did not respond for a while.
It’s only natural to get angry when encountering such incidents, especially for the police. Mu Lin figured that even when she didn’t care much about life before, she would just stand by at most, but certainly not toy with someone else’s life so recklessly. The only ones who could drive her to kill were the assassins that wanted her life.
Taking a deep breath as if to suppress his anger, Xiu Weiqi asked again, "Mu Lin, have you met their leader?"
"Yes," Mu Lin did not hide it.
"Was he among those people last night?" Xiu Weiqi asked rather urgently. For some reason, his intuition told him so.
"...Yes," Mu Lin paused before answering, "But I can’t tell you who he is at the moment." At least not right now.
"Why?" Xiu Weiqi expressed his confusion. If they already know who their enemy is, why can’t they tell them? The leader of the Network organization, he had never thought they would receive information about him so soon. If they know who he is, they will be able to take action more swiftly.
This would be their biggest progress this year.
If they can eradicate this organization altogether, the situation in C Province will certainly change.
It’s not only a mission assigned to him but also something he must accomplish no matter what.
"I can’t tell you the reason," Mu Lin calmly replied, "He has information I want to know. Besides, my word won’t count as evidence." It’s of no practical use.
"That man is absolutely not easy to deal with." And the person behind him, who always wants her life.
Xiu Weiqi pursed his lips, his brows furrowing slightly, remaining silent; he had no idea what Mu Lin intended to hide, also, her purpose was completely unknown to them.
Why were those people trying to kill her, and why did the leader of the Network organization want to play such a cruel game with Mu Lin last night?
He felt as if there was myriad of secrets lurking underneath.
Perhaps he should further investigate Mu Lin’s identity; besides her being a military doctor who suddenly appeared in B City, everything else seems unclear from their records.
Xiu Weiqi’s instinct told him that once they find more about Mu Lin, they may learn something from her, and by following the clues, they might unearth the secrets of that organization.
Perhaps this wouldn’t be as straightforward as it seemed.
After a brief exchange, the two hung up the phone.
Looking at the phone in his hand, Mu Lin let a light smile play on his lips.
