Chapter 464: Chapter 325 - The Mysterious Man (Second Update)_2
While mulling this over, he glanced at Yan Zilei nearby. Their situations were basically the same.
"Sister-in-law, what are you laughing at?" Ren Laifeng looked around but couldn’t find anything amusing.
Mu Lin glanced at him, "Don’t you think that it’s tiring to wear various masks in front of strangers or people of different status, just like they’re doing? It’s exhausting even to watch."
On hearing this, Ren Laifeng was taken aback. He then chuckled, a hint of helplessness in his smile. "Sister-in-law, in our society today, not everyone can live as leisurely as you and Master Jing. Especially when we want to make a name for ourselves, we need to show respect to the higher-ups and also control our approach towards the lower. Being alive feels like such a hassle."
Mu Lin countered, "Isn’t it better to live freely like us?"
"Of course." Ren Laifeng agreed, realizing that not everyone has the privilege to live a carefree life. He admired Mu Lin. There were many things she had to endure that common people like them could not comprehend.
In fact, he thought Mu Lin had a harder life. However, she remained carefree, and did everything as she pleased. This was a feat not everyone could achieve.
That goes for both Mu Lin and Jing Chen.
Mu Lin only chuckled in response and did not speak. With arms crossed, she gazed at the multiple surveillance screens before her.
As time passed, the investment promotion conference began. Watching the crowd below, Mu Lin retreated to a seat, leaning her back and watching every screen attentively.
A frown crept up her face; Mu Lin was visibly irritated.
She disliked the roundabout way of doing things. If someone wanted to harm her, they should come straight out. She was tired of all the sidestepping, all the fuss.
Before they knew it, half of the conference was over, and nothing had happened. Ren Laifeng was beginning to think it was all a joke. After all, the conference was organised by their side. But then, from the corner of his eye, he noticed a sudden change on the surveillance screen.
Many who were attentively listening suddenly bent over in pain and collapsed onto the table. Ren Laifeng stepped forward for a clearer look. One by one, they fell, sweating profusely, their faces twisted in agony.
"Something’s..." Before he could finish, he turned to find that Mu Lin, who had been previously sitting behind him, was gone. "Watch the screens closely, notify me immediately if anything happens," he said before running out.
"Damn it!" Ren Laifeng cursed. The incident had occurred right as the conference was about to conclude. How had the culprit managed to strike? Ren Laifeng was baffled.
If he caught the perpetrators, he would make sure they paid.
Mu Lin found it hard to believe that they had been directly challenged. They dared to poison people right in front of her and were so subtle that nobody noticed.
Such public incidents meant real trouble.
Inside the conference hall, things were in disarray.
"What just happened?" Tang Qishan frowned, looking at the various CEOs around him, their faces distorted in pain.
A minute ago everything was normal, but now there was chaos. Tang Qishan thought back to the warning Mo Yinfan gave to Mu Lin. Did they already know something was going to happen? They were prepared but still got caught off guard.
Whoever was responsible was no amateur.
Yan Zilei stood up, his eyes darting around sharply.
Something’s happened after all!
But why hadn’t everyone been affected? Around two-thirds collapsed, but he was fine, and so were several others, standing dumbfounded with a look of horror on their faces.
The veteran CEOs, who had seen it all, were in shock. They hadn’t anticipated such an event.
Mo Yinfan stood in a corner, cold-eyed, watching the fallen businessmen. Mo Qian stayed attentively by his side.
Despite his meticulous precautions, even having his colleagues serve tea and water, the incident still happened.
Poison, again!
Mo Yinfan remembered what Mu Lin had said. The woman responsible last time was already dead. This time, the culprits seemed far more sophisticated. Despite his meticulous precautions, they had outsmarted him again.
Mo Yinfan was relieved he had told Mu Lin. If she hadn’t been present, the situation would have been much worse.
But was it really not as bad? The answer was ’no’.
Before they could think, there appeared an image of a man with half of his face covered by a mask on the projector screen. The mask bore a lurid red Bi’an flower. Amidst the darkness, his silhouette was bathed in a blood-red light, making him appear eerily strange. He sat casually, leaning slightly forward, with his hands intertwined, watching the scene before him, laughing as if he were a deity.
