Chapter 1031: Chapter 689: The Temporary Calm Returns (16)_2

Back at the Jing family home, Mu Lin looked at the two little darlings who immediately pounced on her, smiling helplessly, "Be careful."

"Mom, you’re back." Gong Rui emerged from the kitchen and asked Mu Lin with a tilt of her head, "Would you like some fruit?"

Mu Lin shook her head, "You guys eat." Then she headed towards where Grandpa Jing and Grandpa Gong were.

At this moment, the two elders were deeply engrossed in their game of chess, with Grandpa Jing pondering over his next move. Mu Lin stepped forward for a look and then took the chess piece from Grandpa Jing’s hand, "Grandpa, checkmate."

The elders looked, and indeed it was checkmate.

Grandpa Gong looked helplessly at Mu Lin, "Linlin, is that how you treat your dear grandpa?"

Grandpa Jing retorted, "And I’m your grandpa too."

Grandpa Gong decided not to quarrel with him, still looking at Mu Lin, "Did you send that child away today?"

Mu Lin nodded, "He’s already recovered and won’t have any more problems; plus, his body will be stronger than an average child’s from now on."

"I remember you saying he was the most serious case, but to think he recovered the fastest. That’s a blessing in disguise," Grandpa Gong said with a smile brimming in his eyes, looking at Mu Lin, "It seems you used your own blood as a medicinal primer, didn’t you?"

Mu Lin didn’t say a word, which was her way of acknowledging; Grandpa Jing continued, "Girl, don’t do this kind of thing in the future; your blood is too unique and precious. It wouldn’t be good if it caught the attention of some ill-intentioned people." It could lead to danger, even threatening her life.

"I understand." She knew what to be careful of.

Then Grandpa Jing said, "Since that child has already been sent away, you won’t need to go to the Research Institute anymore, will you?"

Mu Lin nodded, "I basically won’t need to go there anymore, just a quick check once those dozen or so people have recovered."

"Then take a good few days to rest at home, see how thin you’ve gotten. I’ll have Uncle Song whip you up something nourishing," Grandpa Jing said with a face full of concern.

"Yes, good nourishment," Grandpa Gong chimed in too.

Song Qi nodded.

Mu Lin beamed with laughter, "You two elders really have more and more tacit understanding now, just like real brothers." She thought about her grandfather, who didn’t seem to want to leave here and go back to his own family.

"That’s a nice relationship." They exclaimed in unison, then shared a smile and a gentle high five.

The two elders were both straightforward in nature, had both experienced wars of the past—one in civilian life, the other in the military. They not only got along well but also had topics of common interest and a shared hobby.

With a resigned smile, Mu Lin turned to the elders, "Continue your game with great understanding, I’m going upstairs to rest."

Speaking of which, Mu Lin glanced at the side, where one adult and two kids were snacking on fruit.

Looking at the three of them, Mu Lin’s features softened with tenderness.

Gong Rui, the eldest sister, was doing a really good job; whenever Gong Muxue wasn’t around, she would be especially sensible. Seeing the three siblings getting along so well, Mu Lin was very happy.

Then she turned and went upstairs, while the two elders continued their friendly yet fierce game.

In the evening, Jing Chen arrived home and found Mu Lin leaning against the bed flipping through a medical book.

"Haven’t you already read those?" Jing Chen approached Mu Lin. "Reading them again?" Rereading was one of Mu Lin’s hobbies.

Mu Lin picked up the medical book to show Jing Chen, "This is what my grandpa brought me specially this time he came down the mountain. There are many I haven’t read before. This period of time I’ve been busy, but today I finally finished, so I’m having a look." It had to be said that the Gong family really was a treasure trove of ancient medical knowledge.

It was said that in ancient times, the Gong family was a grand family of nobles and high-ranking officers, but over time, the family declined and then chose a life of seclusion. However, later on, not wanting to be too distant from the people, they opted for a semi-secluded lifestyle. These medical books were passed down from generation to generation, along with others collected over time, accumulating more and more.

In fact, members of each family in the main household had to venture into the world when they reached a certain age, including the once-young Grandpa Gong. After achieving certain milestones, they would take over the family business, and at a certain age, they would step away and pass the business to the next generation. This pattern had continued through the generations.

Therefore, the extent of the influence that these few semi-secluded families (especially the Gong family) have had on society over the centuries was something nobody truly understood; it was also the primary reason why enterprises in society and some people at the top were wary of them.

These were the things Grandpa Gong had mentioned during his chats with Mu Lin.

Mu Lin felt that in this lifetime, even if she lived extravagantly without doing anything, she probably couldn’t spend all her savings. Was her life reaching its peak?

Family, relatives, children, wealth, power, abilities, she had it all. Was there anything she didn’t have? She couldn’t think of anything.

Hearing Mu Lin’s words, Jing Chen sat beside her and glanced at her book, "It really is different." Too bad he couldn’t understand it; at most... he could recognize the words on the cover.

Mu Lin chuckled softly.

Actually, Jing Chen always felt that Mu Jue had trained Mu Lin into an almost omnipotent woman, which as a husband, put a considerable amount of pressure on him.

But, he wasn’t conceding, he was just... giving himself more motivation to keep moving forward.

As if launching a surprise attack, he planted a kiss near Mu Lin’s lips, took the medical skill book from her hands, placed it aside, and scooped her up from the bed, "Come on, it’s time for dinner."

Mu Lin nodded.

After the bustle and battles, life once again returned to tranquility.

Indeed, Mu Lin really enjoyed her current life; it was full of fun and the unknown.

And by her side, people were always there to accompany her as she ventured forward.
