Chapter 1001: Chapter 667: Growing a Kind Face (Second Update)

The village was small, and the four of them soon arrived at the residence of Grandpa Li.

However, during the journey, Mu Lin did manage to ask some questions and got a bit of information out of them, although it didn’t seem of much use to her, as what they said was mostly nonsense.

Well... not all was nonsense.

For example, Old Man Li’s grandson turned five this year, his son and daughter-in-law work in a city far away, and while they do send some money back, they rarely come home. It was just the grandfather and his grandson depending on each other for company. They were all set to send the boy to a nearby kindergarten, but then this incident happened, and all that could be said was that it was Old Man Li’s own bad luck.

And until now, they dared not let Grandpa Li’s children know about the situation, as this was what Grandpa Li himself had said when he was lucid.

The police had been alerted, but unfortunately, they had not found the child yet.

In the beginning, when the child went missing, they already searched throughout the hills and roads, but sadly, they found no trace. Some even thought maybe the child had accidentally run into the woods. Weren’t they playing hide-and-seek? There are plenty of wild animals in the nearby woods; it was possible that a beast had... well... eaten him.

But they couldn’t bring themselves to speak these thoughts to Old Man Li, and within a few days, he began to act erratically, often delirious, and for the past month had been taken care of in turns by the entire village.

Alas... it truly was a tragic misfortune! The elder lamenting over the younger.

Mu Lin felt that these people had no defenses whatsoever against them, two strangers. She didn’t even have to ask, and they had practically confessed everything; or perhaps, they indeed looked more like good people.

Okay, she did indeed have a face that even if she did something bad, people would think she was good. That wasn’t her fault.

This was a conclusion Mu Lin had reached at some point.

And here they were, quickly arriving at Grandpa Li’s home, where he was being restrained. Upon seeing Mu Lin, the people there were initially stunned, then turned to look at Sister Zhang. Sister Zhang explained, "This girl is a doctor. She stopped by our village to take a break from driving, so I had her come and take a look at Old Man Li first to see what she thinks, and then we can take him to the hospital."

People then understood, thinking about Grandpa Li’s good fortune to have a doctor come right to his door; if possible, they really hoped not to take him to the hospital, as hospitals were indeed too expensive nowadays.

However, it must be said that Mu Lin and Jing Chen were both very good-looking, and even though they didn’t talk much, they were the ones people noticed first.

Mu Lin looked towards the elder.

The elder in front of her had hair that was already two-thirds white, supported by two middle-aged men, one on each side. At this moment, he was struggling frantically, and the direction of his gaze, as well as the direction he was struggling to go, was precisely toward that villa.

Could this be his instinct?

"Girl, take a look," Sister Zhang said to Mu Lin, her face showing difficulty, "It’s always like this with Old Man Li, he acts out every now and then. Ordinary people can hardly restrain him. Look, do you think he could go mad like this?" It would be too pitiful if that were the case.

"Let me have a look first," Mu Lin stepped forward, her eyes on Grandpa Li. As she got closer, Grandpa Li suddenly lunged at her as if trying to break free.

"Girl." Sister Zhang wanted to rush forward to pull Mu Lin back but suddenly discovered that the frenzied old man had fainted. Confused, she asked, "What happened?" They hadn’t seen anything just now; how could he have fallen asleep so suddenly?

Mu Lin reached out and retracted the silver needle from Grandpa Li, "It’s nothing, he was just too agitated. I just gave him an acupuncture needle to let him sleep for a while." She then looked at the two men in charge of Grandpa Li, "Put him back on the bed, so I can check on him."

"Thank you," the two men whispered their thanks to Mu Lin and then carried the elder back inside the house. Mu Lin followed them in.

At that moment, those who were originally skeptical now believed that Mu Lin was a doctor, after all, they had no skill to make someone faint so easily with just a needle.

By the bedside, the people watched Mu Lin, observing as she reached out to feel the pulse, curiosity twinkling in their eyes.

"So you’re a Chinese Medicine Doctor." The silver needles just before, and now this, all indicated that Mu Lin wasn’t a Western doctor, for Western medicine generally required tools.

Mu Lin nodded, withdrew her hand, then looked at them and let out a small sigh, "The heart’s illness requires the heart’s medicine; I can only prescribe him a formula to regulate his body. As for his mental issues, I’m afraid I am helpless. Perhaps with time, it will gradually improve."

Understanding her words, the people nearby couldn’t hide their disappointment, but then they heard Mu Lin continue, "Could you tell me in detail about what happened that day to the Li Family elder and his grandson? Maybe I can think of some other methods."

If Mu Lin had not miscalculated, that child was probably already inside that mansion, but as to whether his fate was more misfortune than fortune, Mu Lin could not predict.

Looking at Mu Lin, the people exchanged glances. However, one of the middle-aged men who had been supporting the elder spoke first, "Truthfully, we aren’t very clear ourselves. By the time we were aware, the child had already disappeared." This was the first child disappearance in their area, and since that day, many had become hesitant to let their children play outside alone.

He paused, then continued, "However, I heard Uncle Li say that at the time, he was playing hide-and-seek with the child. When he opened his eyes, the child was gone; he mentioned that he had peeked out of worry and said he saw the child heading towards that mansion."

At that moment, another person chimed in, "Actually, we searched for a long time and didn’t find him. We even plucked up the courage to knock on the mansion’s door once, but they claimed they hadn’t seen the child; moreover, they were particularly aggressive."

"You all live in the same village, aren’t you even a little familiar with each other?" asked Mu Lin, her curiosity apparent.

Sister Zhang said, "Girl, not all wealthy people are as approachable as you." Although she hadn’t met many wealthy folks, she could still distinguish that neither Mu Lin nor Jing Chen were simple, both in temperament and speech.

Although Jing Chen seemed unapproachable, she felt Mu Lin was truly easy to get along with. In her conversation with Mu Lin, she felt seen; even when she rambled a bit, the young woman in front of her never showed any sign of impatience, suggesting in her heart there might not be any real divide between rich and poor.

She had visited big cities, and such people were, in fact, quite rare.

Especially since Mu Lin had not disdained but instead helped Doctor Li with his illness. Just for that, she was confident that she wasn’t mistaken about her.

Listening to Sister Zhang’s words, Mu Lin just smiled without saying anything.

In truth, she was merely following her heart; however, if some people who had been at a disadvantage at the hands of Mu Lin heard this woman’s words, they’d probably think her blind.

Mu Lin, approachable? Was she joking with them? Neither of their two eyes had seen an OK!

Afterward, the people started speaking one after another, telling Mu Lin everything they knew. Yet for Mu Lin and Jing Chen, there wasn’t any particularly useful information; however, there was one thing—they mentioned that the residents of the mansion usually stayed inside and didn’t come out, but every month, a car would enter and exit the mansion, and the concrete road leading out was also built by them.

That might probably be considered the only good deed they had done in this village.

Although it was for their own benefit—after all, living people were being taken in, and if they never emerged, even the smallest place would attract attention and cause panic. Some people were indeed clever. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have just now discovered those disgusting things.

Mu Lin mentioned to the villagers that she wished to head up the mountain to gather some Chinese herbs for the Li Family elder. With the simple villagers’ thanks, she advanced towards the woodlands, where people arranged by her were keeping a constant watch on all the movements of the mansion.

"Master, according to them, almost every month terrible noises can be heard from the mansion; it’s likely those unfortunate souls used as test subjects," his assistant reported. With so many people, the occasional disappearance went largely unnoticed.

After all, countless people go missing every year, and the number who are never found is countless.

If you return, consider yourself lucky; if you do not, that’s just your own bad luck.
