Chapter 87: Chapter 87 Escape in Progress
Almost as soon as the explosion sounded from the north, all of Infinite City’s residents perked up. Though they had been ready for some time, they didn’t act immediately. Instead, they slightly shifted their stances, adjusted their positions, and looked for the right opportunity.
Feng Xue, still wrapped in the blanket, quietly read through a dictionary in his hands. But underneath the blanket, he held a spoon, which he had used to slice open his left side.
Drawing upon his extensive knowledge of dissection from the many corpses he had dealt with, he precisely cut into the necessary spot with the mere spoon, avoiding major blood vessels, and made an incision about sixty millimeters long under his rib.
Blood seeped from the wound, yet he seemed utterly unfazed by the pain. He inserted his fingers into the cut and pulled out several cards.
It was only because Infinite City lacked the concept of bacteria and because the Silent Boots could quickly heal wounds that he dared to hide such treasures within his body.
Though stripped of his equipment, these hidden cards still ensured he had a chance to escape.
He glanced at the card names. Feng Xue pushed two cards back into the wound and held onto the remaining one, whispering softly,
"Activate Trap Magic·Physical Clone."
Name: Illusion·Physical Avatar
Elements: [Trap], [Card], [Clone]
Description: Creates an exact physical duplicate of the caster.
Note: Can only be used when the enemy takes the initiative!
The moment the card was activated, it was as if something began to coalesce on his skin. Feng Xue silently counted in his mind until the viscous sensation solidified. Having been prepared, he relaxed instinctively and slipped through the mattress’s hole into the shadow below with unparalleled smoothness.
Breath Concealment unfolded immediately, hiding all traces of his presence, while above, under the blanket, a "Feng Xue" remained, flipping through a book as if nothing had happened.
Thanks to prior practice, the entire process flowed seamlessly, so much so that the prison’s low-resolution surveillance cameras failed to notice the switch had been made on the bed.
Below the mattress in the shadow, a dent had formed; it was a hole Feng Xue had dug over the past few days with his feet. However, its purpose was not to tunnel out but to provide better concealment—after all, the shadow under the mattress was not sufficient to hide a person.
The Shawshank spoon’s main advantages, besides its durability and sharpness, were its formidable sensing abilities. While a one-hundred-meter radius of perception did not seem large, especially since it could only sense the environment and not enemies, its vertical perception revealed its exaggerated capabilities.
As long as he was within the prison, Feng Xue could accurately monitor the conditions underground, avoiding difficult areas to dig and finding gaps where pipes were laid. He could even locate the legendary habitable sewage system.
Yes, Saint Luotan City did have a sewage system, which, according to the Shawshank spoon, was quite spacious. However, to reach it, Feng Xue had to dig a fifteen-meter-long tunnel.
With a shoulder width of 43cm, even crawling would require carving out nearly four cubic meters of rock and soil. Using the tiny spoon to excavate one cubic decimeter of soil per second was already a testament to Feng Xue’s fast hands. Even so, it would take him over an hour to escape at maximum efficiency, not to mention the real challenge of filling the tunnel behind him. To finish within four hours would truly signify a reincarnated mole.
Understanding that his time was running out, Feng Xue couldn’t care less about the bleeding under his ribs. He used the assassin’s skill to squeeze the wound, temporarily stopping the bleeding, then, wielding a small spoon, he began to dig. Compared to Andy’s tiny hammer that took years just to penetrate a wall, this spoon could quite rightly be called a divine digging artifact.
The hard concrete and brick felt as soft and pliable as ice cream; he hardly needed to exert any force to remove a chunk, and even the sound of cutting was pitifully quiet. Over these days, Feng Xue had already planned the digging route, a tunnel sloping downwards that allowed the soil and rocks to be pushed behind. It soon took shape under his rapidly swinging arms.
Initially, Feng Xue was half-crouching in the hole, half-hidden in the shadows, but after a few minutes, he was completely submerged underground.
And then, he could finally relax a bit.
Shawshank’s spoon had created a tunnel with the Concealment attribute, making it very hard for conventional methods to detect before an escape. In other words, it would be very difficult for anyone outside to notice him hiding in this pit just by observing.
However, at the end of the day, that "Physical Clone" above was nothing more than a time-sensitive gadget. Once it was discovered that he wasn’t in his cell, no matter how hidden the passageway was, it would still be found during a thorough search.
Shawshank’s spoon worked hard, and the handcuffs and shackles snapped off with a clink. It had to be said, the attributes of a divine artifact were overpowering; described as unparalleled, it meant just that, even metal shackles were no more than a trifling matter.
Feng Xue had intended to turn these shackles into a divine artifact as well, but considering that once he escaped, he would have plenty of base material, he abandoned the idea.
After all, it’s unpredictable whether it might entail elements of "Imprisonment" or if Refining could result in a "War Chains" that no one could escape. Wouldn’t that be sabotaging himself?
He reached under the bed and pulled out a pair of leather shoes that came with his clothes. Although they weren’t a perfect fit, they were certainly more comfortable than the prison shoes.
With the new shoes on and free from the shackles, Feng Xue rapidly swung his arms, debris and dirt flying, his body inching forward bit by bit.
He had never understood why in those escape animations and movies, the protagonists liked to dig while lying down, but now that he was experiencing it firsthand, he began to realize—
Digging a tunnel that allowed one to crawl through rather than stand required far less time and energy.
By now, the noise inside and outside the prison had continued for almost an hour, yet the people from Infinite had no intention of taking action.
It wasn’t that they were foolishly waiting for the order from their organizer. They knew that this place must certainly be the prison’s most heavily defended area. If they went out now, it would be no different from trying to force their way out during normal times.
As time ticked away, suddenly, a round of gunfire that sounded dangerously close erupted. The prison guards visibly grew agitated, pacing around. Then, those from Infinite started to gather their energies, some using Qi Boost.
At the end of the day, every one of the Infinite who dared to venture out possessed Absolute Skills. Even without a divine artifact by their side, they were tough characters who had fought their way out of piles of corpses. Their judgment of the situation was, of course, extremely precise.
Without the need for a commander’s order, almost the moment the prison guards instinctively turned their attention towards the gunfire, all the prepped members of Infinite unleashed their combat prowess.
Some tore through iron doors, some smashed the walls leading to the yard, and some, as if boneless, simply wriggled through the gaps in the iron bars.
The prison guards, with their lax positions, were completely unprepared for this sudden upheaval. By the time they adjusted their stances and raised their guns, the fastest of the Infinite had already charged into their faces.
Blood instantly stained the prison walls red, and those from Infinite who had not been part of the planning and were hesitating to act were now spurred into action, belatedly destroying the jails they were confined in.
