Chapter 475: Chapter 475 Watch Well, Learn Well
Leaving the prominent, attention-attracting mansion, Feng Xue found a secluded spot to drop the child off and began fiddling with the two items in his hands.
"Give me back my treasure!" the child demanded, stretching out his hand in a somewhat petulant manner. He lacked the previous aggression, and it was unclear whether he truly understood what Feng Xue had said or had simply realized he couldn’t defeat this person and accepted his weakness.
"Here." Feng Xue tossed the "technologically unsophisticated" Red Silk to the child, who wrapped it around his wrist. The child’s eyes lingered on the golden bracelet in Feng Xue’s hand, clearly wanting it too, but Feng Xue shook his head and said,
"This bracelet of yours is quite interesting. Let me play with it for a while."
"No! This is a treasure I’ve had since I was born! I can’t give it to you!" The child firmly refused, but Feng Xue replied with a smile,
"How about this? I’ll borrow your little figurine to play with right in front of you for half an hour, then I’ll give it back to you, how about that?"
Hearing the word ’figurine’, the child’s eyes lit up, and a sly expression crossed his face. After a quick thought, he said,
"My treasure is worth much more than your figurine! Just playing won’t do! How about this: you give me the figurine, and I let you play with it for half a day!"
"You’re being a bit greedy now!" Feng Xue laughed as he heard the child’s proposal. The child wanted to say more but listened as Feng Xue proposed,
"How about this? I’ll give you a Wood Spirit. You take it home and tend to it slowly. How’s that?"
"You’re not going to trick me, right?" The child looked at Feng Xue suspiciously, but Feng Xue casually waved his hand and said,
"If I really wanted to trick you, I would just take it by force. You can’t beat me, and you don’t even know who I am. If I took it and left, what could you do?"
"That’s true!" The child nodded, seeming to find some sense in what Feng Xue said but still insisted,
"First give me the Wood Spirit!"
Feng Xue shook his head and took a piece of wood out of his pocket, tossing it to the child, "The Wood Spirit needs a body to dwell in. You need to make that yourself. He’ll follow you only if you make a wooden person. Start making one, and then I’ll give you the Wood Spirit."
"I’ll make it then!"
The child, naturally curious about crafting, didn’t care about his golden bracelet anymore and sat down on the ground to start chopping away at the wood.
Watching the wood, which was almost as hard as stone, being carved effortlessly like clay in the child’s hands, Feng Xue wasn’t bothered and bent his head to study the golden bracelet.
It wasn’t that he didn’t want to study the Red Silk; the technology gap was just too vast! Even with the powers of "Cleverly Crafted," "Master of Many Trades," and "Seven-orifice Exquisite," he could barely understand its function and some basic principles. As for the craftmanship, he was completely clueless.
Just the fact that the Red Silk didn’t fundamentally have a "thickness" was something Feng Xue couldn’t figure out using any non-mysterious explanations.
In contrast, although the golden bracelet was filled with black technology as well, at least Feng Xue could discern some clues about it.
Apart from its customizable size feature, the essential effect of this object was to throw it out and hit someone; in hard terms, there was no difference from a brick.
The technological essence resided in the fact that it wasn’t the kind that knocked people over with its weight but with its acceleration.
Yes, after being released from the hand, it would continue to accelerate, and according to Feng Xue’s Power feedback, this acceleration principle should be similar to an ion thruster (or even photon propulsion). It could streamline the ions in its path through a ring structure, converting them into its own drive force. The higher the initial speed, the faster the acceleration; this was all well and good on the Earth’s surface, but in space, as long as the distance was sufficient, it could accelerate to speeds approaching the speed of light.
"Wow, a spacecraft-grade propulsion used as a brick?" Feng Xue became increasingly speechless the more he looked at the golden bracelet, but one way or another, it held far more research value to him than that Red Silk.
"Okay!" Just as Feng Xue was concentrating on memorizing the various Runes on the golden bracelet, a kid suddenly tugged at his trouser leg, and Feng Xue looked down to see an incredibly ugly wooden figurine being waved frantically at him by the child.
"..." Feng Xue looked at the wooden figurine, then rather disdainfully stuffed the golden bracelet into the child’s hand and said,
"I’m done playing."
"What? You want to go back on your word?!" The child immediately became anxious, even clutching the golden bracelet with a "you believe I will hit you" kind of attitude.
Seeing the child make this gesture subconsciously, Feng Xue knew that Teaching truly wasn’t some brainwashing ability, but he’d anticipated this and simply crouched down to bring his eyes level with the child’s, then pointed to the wooden figurine in his hand and said,
"Do you think this can be called a wooden person? Or rather, if you were a Wood Spirit, would you want to use this thing as your body?"
"..." The child looked down at the wooden figurine, which not only had uneven legs and arms longer than its legs but also lacked joints, and ultimately couldn’t bring himself to thickly claim he would.
Seeing the child’s dejected appearance, Feng Xue nonetheless began to laugh, then fished out a magical pen from his pocket and started drawing lines on the wood:
"Nothing in this world is easy; come on, I’ll teach you how to make a good-looking wooden person."
"Okay!" It had to be said, humans are like this; although originally it was Feng Xue who owed him, suddenly receiving hope when disappointed, the child immediately cheered up as if he had received a gift.
Feng Xue didn’t really take advantage of him, instead, he earnestly explained how to make the parts properly sized and how to make the joints more flexible.
Maybe the child was naturally bright, or maybe it was the focus brought by interest; either way, after two hours of thorough instruction, the child finally managed to make a wooden person that looked somewhat decent by hand.
Although it essentially still felt like a movable matchstick man, the child was as excited as if he had made the world’s first robot.
Noticing this, Feng Xue nodded and said appreciatively:
"Not bad, not bad, you’ve got talent. Here, I’ll give you a Wood Spirit."
As he spoke, Feng Xue flicked his finger, and the Poisonous Insect Body transformed into a glimmer of light, entering the wooden figurine. The child immediately felt as though the wooden figurine in his hands wanted to move.
Having previously accidentally killed a Wood Spirit, the child quickly carefully released his grip, and the palm-sized wooden person stood right up from his hand, but compared to Feng Xue’s clever little buddy, this Wood Spirit seemed quite slow-witted.
"Why does the one you gave me look so dumb?" the child grumbled somewhat dissatisfied, but he was extremely careful with his hands. Feng Xue saw this and didn’t tease him, simply saying,
"It was just born, naturally it’s a bit slow. I’ll teach you how to give it commands; the more you teach, the smarter it will get!"
