Chapter 455: Chapter 455 Insomnia
"Are you sure? Not just confused from sleep?"
If it were just the Detective, the needle prick and She Tong could almost be certain he had been driven mad by his Obsession Object, but since even Qing Jin, the veteran Dream Guardian, said the same, it was an entirely different concept.
Regarding the confirmatory nature of these two’s questions, looking at the Detective beside him with an expression like "Quickly draw a pair and kill him," Qing Jin nodded and said:
"I did indeed see it, and actually it is still a bit early. Just wait a bit longer, after the excitement has passed, when those ordinary people have fallen asleep, you should get messages from them."
"Yes, yes, there are also ordinary people, with such a large number, surely many will have seen it!" The Detective, who seemed to have been suffocated by suspicion earlier, immediately repeated like a parrot.
She Tong and the needle prick exchanged a glance before breaking the brief silence, the needle prick spoke up:
"Did someone bring the Obsession Object to the real world?"
"Obsession Objects have appeared for more than a year or two now, and so far, we have no method to take them out. Even if it were possible to bring out an Obsession Object, I think, given the current characteristics of Obsession Objects, it doesn’t match the effects of flying with Sword Control and getting struck by lightning."
Qing Jin shared his seasoned opinion, while the Detective was more direct:
"If there’s already a Dream World, then having a Cultivator or something wouldn’t be strange, right?"
"It’s very strange." The needle prick shook his head, explaining to the newcomer who had only been in the field for a few years:
"So far, everything supernatural has been confined to the Dream World, fundamentally because Destiny, in the real world, everything is already determined, and even technology is completely locked down.
"You might not understand what this means, so let me put it this way, according to a summary of intelligence from major laboratories last year, an alloy formula that had already been researched in the Dream World twenty years ago still has no clues in the Real World.
"It’s not that there isn’t a theoretical basis, but so far, all experiments just happened to bypass the correct path that we know of, and might even bypass those correct paths we don’t yet know about. Even if you try an exhaustive method of trial and error, various reasons will still lead to missing or outright because of accidents being unable to complete.
"Even if you don’t understand this technology, you must have heard that material science requires a lot of luck, and in the Real World, material science can’t just be said to have bad luck—it’s more like ’it’s fated.’
"In other words, when even technology is locked in reality, how do you think systems like Immortal Cultivation could remain unlocked?"
Listening to the needle prick’s words, the Detective was momentarily speechless, but after a moment of thought, Qing Jin shook his head and said:
"Not necessarily, after all, from various documents related to Immortal Cultivation transmitted in our reality, there is often a description like going against the Heavenly Dao, and in the oldest batch of novels, there are even detailed destinies where each Magic Treasure born is predestined who will obtain it."
"Are you talking about the unfinished book?" The Detective had heard of that book but, because it was unfinished and also because of its oppressive world view, had never read it.
Qing Jin nodded in response:
"Because of the death predestined in that book, no one has ever heard of research in this area, and many older predecessors believe that the author of that book is also a Dream Guardian, who just used terms like Immortal Cultivation, Heavenly Dao, Destiny, Magic Treasure and such to refer to various intentions within the Dream World. But later it was confirmed that one could not remember dream affairs after awakening, thus refuting that view."
"But what if it’s true? What if there’s really a way to keep memories from dreams after waking up, and there really is Immortal Cultivation that defies Destiny?" The Detective asked tentatively, to which the needle prick only replied with a cold remark:
"There are no ’ifs’ because as soon as you assume it’s real, you would find many unexplainable faults, like why, given the guidance of Dream World technology, modern technology is still locked."
"What if it’s restricted by Destiny? Or perhaps it must avoid the watchful eyes of Destiny and not reveal something." The Detective wanted to find a reasonable excuse, but was interrupted by the needle prick raising his hand:
"Don’t multiply entities without necessity; if every hypothesis has to be explained with a new hypothesis, then even the most absurd impossibilities can become reasonable."
"We don’t need to focus too much on this matter." Qing Jin, who had personally seen someone going through tribulation, suppressed his excitement and suggested a somewhat bland course of action:
"There aren’t few people who saw this incident, follow-up developments will definitely come, whether it be the Dream World or the Real World, both will likely respond accordingly; for now, let’s just quietly watch."
As the group came to this conclusion, the topic ended for the moment, even the most excited Detective calmed down, but as time gradually passed, everyone suddenly realized something was not quite right.
Because today, this small town seemed unusually quiet.
"What’s going on? Is it a sense of time imbalance?" She Tong thought of a common situation in the Dream World; the Detective reached for the clock on the desk and said:
"Although there is indeed a slight imbalance, it’s only about fifteen minutes. It should already be early in the morning in the real world, usually, at this time, people really should be coming online in masses."
"I’ll contact the branch office and ask." The needle prick immediately stood up, pulled out a mobile phone, and began communicating with the provincial branch office; after a moment, he returned to the living room with a peculiar expression and said:
"The provincial office says there are no problems, it seems only our area is experiencing issues."
"Could it be the Cultivator from earlier?" The Detective frowned, his previous excitement replaced by a hint of fear.
Qing Jin thought for a moment then said:
"I will go back to reality and check."
"Let me do it." The Detective reached out to stop Qing Jin and then said:
"I live in the downtown area in reality, I can gather information from my surroundings more quickly, and usually, I am the type who wakes up in the middle of the night, walks around a bit, then falls back asleep. If it were you, you might just turn over and carry on sleeping, right?"
Hearing the Detective say this, Qing Jin was momentarily silent. After all, not being able to remember the Dream World after waking was indeed a fact; he nodded his head, and the Detective immediately leaned back on the couch, quickly falling into a deep sleep...
...
"Tsk...only slept for less than three hours? Is it because I slept too much earlier?" The Detective who returned from the dream looked at the clock beside his bed, slightly puzzled as he sat up. But since he was awake, he habitually slipped into his slippers, headed to the living room, poured himself a cup of hot water, and stared out at the night view.
However, what surprised him was this small city, which normally had little nightlife, was unusually lively at two in the morning. The lights outside the windows and the occasional noise from downstairs seemed to prove that no one felt much like sleeping tonight.
