Chapter 37: Chapter 37 Recognize Reality
"Leave? Where are we going now?" As Feng Xue rose, Chen Xiyao immediately asked. They had just settled down; why move again?
"I was previously too conservative in my estimate. We’re still not close enough to the outer wall; we might have to keep going back and forth if we stay here, which could easily arouse suspicion..."
As she said this, Feng Xue gave Chen Xiyao a strange look, then added,
"And I’m worried you can’t hold it in."
"What can’t I hold in?" Chen Xiyao obediently followed Feng Xue, but she couldn’t help asking.
Feng Xue rolled her eyes and said,
"Using the restroom."
"What does that have to do with using the restroom? You’re not planning to move us next to a public toilet, are you? That would be too dirty!"
Chen Xiyao, born after the 90s, had seen her fair share of squat toilets during her childhood and even learned in elementary school social studies on how to flush a dry toilet... As she thought about living next to a dry toilet, she couldn’t help but shudder.
"It’s not about public toilets. It’s that there are no toilets here at all. People in our world don’t need to use toilets," Feng Xue explained reluctantly. Chen Xiyao rolled her eyes just like Feng Xue had done earlier,
"What kind of Eastern Country idol setting is this?"
However, after their eyes met briefly, Chen Xiyao started to feel uneasy. Looking at Feng Xue’s handsome, serious face, she nervously asked,
"Are you serious?"
"Mhm." Feng Xue nodded solemnly, then gestured vaguely toward the distant outer wall,
"In the future, if you need to use the restroom, you’ll have to go outside that wall. After all, people here don’t use toilets. Once someone detects a strange smell, it would be easy to discover that you’re actually an outsider."
"Strange smells..." Chen Xiyao’s face reddened slightly upon hearing this, but seeing Feng Xue already taking steps forward, she knew there was no time to dwell on it and immediately followed her.
As the initial excitement and stimulation of time traveling gradually faded due to Feng Xue’s indifferent manner, she began to feel a bit scared. Looking at Feng Xue’s back, which seemed unchangeable no matter what they faced, she suddenly remembered she had neglected to ask the most important question due to her nervousness—
"Um, why are those people trying to kill me?"
"To be precise, they are only chasing you; they don’t want to kill you," Feng Xue corrected without turning to face the girl.
"They don’t want to kill me? Then why am I running?" Chen Xiyao felt as though a question mark should appear above her head, only to hear Feng Xue continue as if merely changing her tone,
"They just want to torture you in various ways, to leave you with psychological scars that you’ll never forget, even unto death."
"Isn’t this even worse now? Seriously, how did I offend them?" Chen Xiyao listened to Feng Xue’s words, and she felt terrible. She also doubted whether Feng Xue was deliberately stirring up tension, but the problem was, as she looked northward, she could see lines of lights continuously spreading and advancing; obviously, they were searching for her.
As for the idea that she was actually being dragged down by this man...
Chen Xiyao had never entertained such thoughts. After all, the man’s skills were so swift that if he hadn’t been with her, it would have been very easy for him to escape. Instead, despite being able to escape alone, he had insisted on taking her, a stranger, with him, which itself seemed like a show of goodwill, right?
After all, no one would intentionally bring along a burden while trying to escape, just to cause trouble, right?
Of course, if Chen Xiyao were involved in a soul transmigration, she might consider whether her transmigrated body belonged to some underworld princess or something similar, but presently being in her own body, she naturally wouldn’t unnecessarily acquire any additional attributes.
Feng Xue was, for the most part, satisfied with Chen Xiyao’s behavior; she neither made a scene nor harbored any random suspicions. Of course, it didn’t exclude the possibility that the other was a fool who believed whatever was said, but regardless, it was still easier to handle than rebellious girls.
Facing such a compliant subject, Feng Xue didn’t mind explaining a bit—
"You mentioned earlier that my name sounds like that of someone from Yan Country... Have you heard the story of ’Journey to the West’?"
"Journey to the West? Of course, I’ve heard of it, but I’m not sure if it’s the same story you’re referring to..." Chen Xiyao found it a bit strange to suddenly hear the name of one of Yan Country’s four great classics, but she still responded cautiously, "Um, are you talking about the story where a monk travels to Western Heaven with a skilled monkey, a lazy gluttonous pig, and a water demon with low presence?"
"Yes, that’s the one. You know about Tang Seng, right? Your situation is quite similar to that monk’s. Anyone who knows of your existence wants to capture you."
Feng Xue spoke these cruel lines in the calmest tone, and Chen Xiyao finally understood her predicament.
For a moment, the two were enveloped in silence again.
Walking on the street at this time was a bit dangerous, but Feng Xue, wearing a hood, managed to avoid some trouble.
Although the Assassin’s Suit’s Concealment was an individual skill, usually, when others are present, if you are unremarkable, people tend to focus on those around you, and the Concealment’s effect could be even better than walking alone on the streets.
Although Chen Xiyao was an outsider, the characteristics of outsiders weren’t obvious in this world; daring to walk "alone" on the road at this time wouldn’t arouse suspicion.
The two walked in the landfill area, which felt like a ghostly night street for five or six minutes before finding a suitable dwelling place. It was only about a hundred meters from the outer wall and there were no visible footprints around; it had clearly been abandoned for a long time. The surrounding houses were also uninhabited, not only reducing the risk of exposure but also allowing for effective modification.
Although that was how Feng Xue saw it, Chen Xiyao obviously didn’t feel the same. Even though she tried hard to hide her disdain, looking at the house that was even more dilapidated than the previous one with a broken skylight, she couldn’t help but ask the question—
"Can people really live in this house?"
"The temperature in the landfill area is constant; even if you sleep on the street, you won’t catch a cold. Compared to the function of traditional houses, living in a house is more about satisfying human habits."
Feng Xue explained bluntly. After checking around the room and ensuring there were no particularly dangerous spots, she quickly walked to the door, turned to the girl, and said,
"I’ll go fetch two pots of water. Stay here and don’t move."
