Chapter 327: Chapter 327 All is Business
"Fuck! I’m losing out here!" Upon waking up, Feng Xue habitually checked her personal terminal, and she couldn’t help but blurt out a sarcastic remark.
Yes, sarcasm, because this morning’s headline news was about various supermarkets selling out of cling wrap and air fryers due to a surge in demand. Even the expensive and unpopular k-729, which most stores only stocked a few of, received what could only be described as a tidal wave of orders.
Without a doubt, for someone in the live streaming business, that’s a savvy move that’s as good as bringing one’s own provisions. But to her, it didn’t matter one iota how much revenue it could generate. What really mattered was the tag of "Ghost Hunting Expert" that she’d inadvertently gained.
However, after she logged into Dunn Simone’s account, the various ringtone sounds of incoming calls exploded instantly—over thirty companies from around the world, dealing in cling wrap and air fryers, sent her proposals for partnerships, each offering a more extravagant price than the last.
To this, Feng Xue could only sigh: "Nobody’s a fool," and she proceeded to delete most of the messages, leaving only the ones from the largest corporations.
It wasn’t because she was suddenly keen on the idea; it was just that, these days, one needs to have some backing. If she brought in sales for big manufacturers, then, before her own downfall, these firms would help protect her, even if they had privately figured out that Dunn and Bert were one and the same, or even guessed that they were the same person.
Or rather, even if they were aware of this, they’d covertly cover for Feng Xue until the cost of doing so exceeded the profits Feng Xue and her "ghost stories" could bring in.
Using the identities of two of Dunn’s underlings, she signed sponsorship deals with several well-backed companies; then, she switched back to Bert’s identity to start today’s livestream.
...
"Hey everyone, I’m the Martial Arts Faction streamer Bert. Today, I’m taking you to Spader District to check out the legendary Iron Armor Steel Fist. Honestly, I’m quite curious about the power output of these cybernetic limbs designed for fighting."
Feng Xue struck a muscular pose for the camera while using the Poisonous Insect Body to manipulate the White Ghost Hand into teasing the audience with a variety of movements.
Sure enough, as the ghost hand performed its flamboyant antics, the viewers in her livestream began to go wild with their sarcastic comments.
"Streamer, that hand is right behind you!"
"Please, streamer, just go buy a k-729, okay? It’s not that expensive, and you’ve made enough in donations these past few days to buy ten of them!"
"People from Black Thorn say that the ghost hand, which can disappear from photos, is that kind which has become a ’strong observer’ and is the toughest to deal with. Buying things won’t work, so please get Dunn back on the job!"
"Exactly, go get Mr. Dunn to help. Even though he’s pricier, he’s way better than those two rookies under him who need chocolate to hunt ghosts!"
...
Seeing such comments, Feng Xue could easily feel the "Ghost Hunting Expert" tag within her growing rapidly. But just like those streamers who deliberately challenge their viewers’ blood pressure during puzzle game live streams, she turned a blind eye to the ghost hand, virtually dancing in front of her, and with a lecturing tone said:
"How many times have I told you guys, at your age, you should believe in science, not fall for all this nonsense. There’s no such thing as ghosts in this world! And quantum ghosts, come on, don’t pin everything on quantum stuff. The observer effect only applies to the microscopic, understand? And even then, the effect is due to the disturbance caused by the act of observation, not because of some deep, mystical cognition or spirit..."
"But, streamer, why won’t you take advice?"
"Yeah, if a ghost hassles you too much, things will go wrong!"
"Streamer, I know you’ve already seen the ghost, you’re just being stubborn. We won’t laugh at you, just admit it!"
...
"So, there really are no ghosts, okay? A vigorous person like myself wouldn’t be approached by ghosts even if they did exist, right?"
No matter what the audience said, Feng Xue maintained a steadfastly skeptical demeanor, which cured years of low blood pressure among the viewers.
However, having constantly chaotic comments wasn’t ideal, so Feng Xue’s eyes darted around, "Iron Armor Ghost Hand" live broadcast plan temporarily set aside, he headed back inside, pointing at the mirror on the wall:
"Since you all say there are ghosts, let’s do a Ghost Collision live broadcast. Starting from today, every night at 11:40 sharp, I’ll start streaming and challenge those so-called Ghost Collision legends. I just don’t believe it, it’s 2077 for heaven’s sake, and we still can’t cure this fear of ghosts!"
After that, Feng Xue ended the stream at lightning speed, leaving behind a bunch of bewildered viewers staring at a black screen.
Soon, the live room switched back to previous clips, but Feng Xue had no time to rest. Today, he had taken on three ghost hunting contracts under three different identities, and had to capture the poisonous insect bodies he had sent out.
As for whether this was trying too hard, of course not, because after the Black Thorn Ghost Hunting Agency broadcasted their ghost hunts live, several more ghost hunting agencies appeared on the market, each claiming an inheritance of a thousand years and using ancient methods to hunt ghosts. Each one fiercely criticized Dunn, accusing him of publicly harming their business.
Most of them made some superficial changes to their methods and tools, but the basic structure was all according to Feng Xue’s approach, only under the packaging of things like Daoist robes, priest robes, Bibles, and holy water, they looked much more professional than Dunn.
Unfortunately, though their soft power had increased, their hard power still needed improvement. While there were some successful instances of frying a "ghost," more often than not, they failed to catch the ghost and ended up being bullied by it.
How were they bullied? Some were beaten up, while others had their artificial bodies dismantled. Although no one had died yet, there were also incidents where, after being "possessed" by a "ghost," someone ended up at the Dai Bird Round-Round-Round bar, purchasing a base head four-gift package, only for the ghost to flee, leaving the person to experience the set meal.
And it was all live-streamed across the network!
Of course, these incidents were the doings of ghosts and obviously had nothing to do with Feng Xue.
In short, even though Dunn was seen as the least professional in the whole network, his and his apprentices’ dubious performances notwithstanding, his success rate was still there, and he remained the city’s top ghost hunter.
As for other cities...
Given how traders bearing poisonous insect bodies traveled between cities, it wouldn’t be long before ghosts would be everywhere in the world.
"I wonder when it will turn into a Kaidan entry."
After swiftly dealing with three weak poisonous insect bodies, he entered the lawless area to switch identities, then returned to Bert’s residence.
As time passed, 11:40 soon arrived.
As the live room’s past clips were once again replaced by the live stream, the eagerly waiting audience saw Bert’s familiar face.
And appearing with him was a dressing table with a mirror, two white candles, a small knife, and, an apple...
"Ladies and gentlemen, good evening, since you all say there are ghosts in this world, let me try this most effective little trick from the legends for Ghost Collision. Hopefully, it can cure everyone’s fear of ghosts..."
