Chapter 287: The problem is serious, so there’s no need to be afraid
Chapter 287: Chapter 287: The problem is serious, so there’s no need to be afraid
"Mu-Da!"
A furious roar exploded next to Yayuka’s ear, and immediately after, she was horrified to see the disgusting one-eyed monster being blown away by a phantom punch!
Simple and direct, just like something out of an animation, the short and rotund one-eyed monster flew through the air, its eyeball bursting open, spraying brain matter and bodily fluids along with blood.
No, not just fluids—its body was like a watermelon brutally smashed by a giant hammer, not just the juice, but the fruit meat and rind as well, disintegrated together.
Organs, flesh, and even the filthy monk’s robe were pulverized by that punch, and by the time it flew about five meters away, it had completely turned to ashes.
"What’s... what’s happening?" Stunned by the scene before her, Yayuka stared blankly, but the intense hunger in her belly forced her to snap out of the shock.
So hungry!
So hungry!
So hungry!
Recalling the legend of the "hungry ghost" that Rinko had mentioned, Yayuka reflexively touched her front bumper pad to confirm it hadn’t changed in size, then picked up the bread Rinko had left her and began to devour it in big bites.
After finishing one loaf of bread, the hunger in her stomach eased slightly. Yayuka tore open the packaging of a second loaf and began to eat more slowly.
She chewed the food in small bites and started piecing together the lightning-fast events that had just transpired. After a brief silence, she roughly sorted out something.
"That one-eyed thing must be a Kaidan... hm, something like a Cyclops monk. It attacks those who can see it, and it tried to attack me after realizing I could see it."
Based on the available information, Yayuka made that simple deduction, and then...
What about the person who shouted "useless"?
As Yayuka’s thoughts grew chaotic, an unnervingly discordant sound of footsteps approached. She slightly turned her head and saw that her classmates in the infirmary were unresponsive. She quickly realized this might be another Kaidan and immediately lowered her head, pretending to focus on the bread in her hands.
Soon, the footsteps came closer, and several oddly shaped demons rushed in, starting to search around.
Some of these demons had heads as big as buckets, some had necks longer than giraffes, and others looked like lumps of flesh with limbs, each one unique in their aberrance.
Watching these Kaidan hopping and searching the room, Yayuka’s nerves tightened, and she nibbled on her bread, feeling her stomach churn.
The excessive tension almost made her want to vomit, but the urge of hunger prompted her to keep eating.
"There’s nothing!" exclaimed a long-necked demon, which could possibly be the "Rokurokubi" of legends, twisting its neck and speaking in a puzzled voice, after pulling its head from under the bed.
The lump-like monster blinked its mung bean-sized eyes, wondering:
"This is definitely the place with the most intense ’Identity’ of the Cyclops, so why is there no trace?"
"That guy has the ability to beg for mercy; he couldn’t have been wiped out without any noise," said the monster with a worryingly large head, continuously surveying the infirmary’s setup and frowning:
"And there are no signs of Combat here!"
"But the Hundred-eyed Demon could never be wrong! The aura of the One-eyed Demon Entrant has already vanished!"
Rumbling Head twisted its tentacle-like neck and stared at the ordinary students in the infirmary, saying,
"These people aren’t showing any reactions either. If they had really encountered the Masked Rider, there should have been some commotion, right? It’s impossible that all these dozen students are the Masked Rider, right? And I didn’t detect the presence of the Masked Rider Belt and the ’Identity’ either!"
"Could it be that they aren’t in this room?" the Big-headed Monster pushed its head through the window, looking around—
"Something that could eliminate a One-eyed Demon Entrant without even giving them time to beg for mercy, and that ordinary people can’t see... This is probably not the work of the Masked Rider, but some other Kaidan."
"That’s impossible. There are no traces of anything else here, aside from the aura of the One-eyed Demon Entrant. There’s absolutely no sign that a Kaidan has interfered."
The Tumorous Monster’s veins began to writhe quickly, and Rumbling Head shook its neck like a skipping rope:
"Then did the One-eyed Demon Entrant go somewhere else and get dealt with there?"
"We can only assume that. Hmm, those Masked Riders from the Eastern Country do collect ’Identities’ after death, don’t they? Maybe the remaining ’Identity’ of the One-eyed Demon Entrant has already been taken away..."
"Doesn’t that leave us with no clues?"
"No clues aren’t good? I sure don’t want to fight with a Masked Rider! Let’s report the situation here quickly!"
...
As the three Monsters discussed and slipped out of the infirmary, Yayuka finally let out a sigh of relief. With the ringing of the end-of-class bell, the hallway outside also became noisy.
"Little Yayuka! I brought the biscuits I made in home economics class for you to try!" Rinko’s voice came from outside the door, and Yayuka’s mood finally improved a lot. Instead of taking the biscuits, she shakily climbed out of bed. The infirmary was too scary; the classroom with more people seemed much safer.
...
Somehow, she made it to the end of the school day, but Yayuka’s mood hadn’t improved at all, because she realized that the streets were filled with far more Kaidan than the school!
"What on earth is all this? Have I always lived in a world like this?" Yayuka watched the Monsters coming and going, and as they occasionally bared their teeth and waved their claws at passersby, she felt her sanity plummeting.
She almost fled for her life into a convenience store on the street corner, avoiding what seemed to be a "Ghost" patrolling inside and, like someone ransacking the place, swept all the sanitary pads from the shelf into her shopping cart. Although she wasn’t due for her period yet, today’s experiences had convinced her that she was not going to be able to do without these...
Hence, not long after, there was a girl at the checkout, pushing a full cart of sanitary pads and high-calorie snacks, as if she were stocking up for the New Year, which even left the cashier momentarily bewildered.
"Check out!" Yayuka said, trying to stay calm as the Ghost that had circled the store approached her. Her tone was as commanding as if she were robbing a bank.
The cashier immediately realized their lapse and began apologizing profusely, bowing deeply in the Spirit of the Eastern Country craftsmen while quickly scanning the items.
This massive shopping spree cost Yayuka several Fukuzawa Yukichis, but to her, these were necessary expenses. Although she did not yet understand exactly what was happening, she had concluded after a day’s thought that whether it was her suddenly being able to see Kaidan or the figure that shattered the One-eyed Demon Entrant, it was directly related to her suddenly increased appetite!
What was more painful than the money spent was figuring out how to carry all these bags...
"Eh? Not heavy?"
A hint of surprise flashed across Yayuka’s resigned face. The belongings, which should have weighed at least ten pounds, felt as light as a balloon in her hand.
But this physical relief did not bring Yayuka any joy; instead, it deepened her sorrow—
"My body has definitely gone seriously wrong!"
