Chapter 165 Execution
Chapter 165: Chapter 165 Execution
Under the night sky of Bakerland, the brilliantly lit city felt anything but tranquil amid the bustling nightlife, where unnoticed within a certain villa, a murder was taking place.
As the gun equipped with a makeshift silencer fired its bullets, a man dressed in expensive clothing fell to the ground. The shooter did not hesitate, pulling out a card he had prepared earlier and throwing it onto the corpse, then quickly rummaged through the room.
"Damn, how can such a nice house not have any money?" The murderer muttered as he busied for a while. He pocketed a valuable watch, a ring, and other items, swiftly leaving the crime scene.
He did not drive but removed the skull mask from his face and briskly walked toward the nearby subway station. Although it was somewhat late, the nightlife in Bakerland had begun to pick up several months after the arrest of those murderers, compounded by foreigners brought in by the Olympic Games, making him unremarkable on the streets at this time.
However, as he crossed a park, a chilling bell sound suddenly spread from nowhere.
"[Victoria’s curse], who puts such a bell in a park, are they crazy?" The startled murderer cursed as he immediately tried to leave quickly but just then, from the corner of his eye, suddenly caught a glimpse of a shadow.
It was...
A pale skull mask!
Just like the one he had worn!
"biu—"
The murderer hardly hesitated before pulling out a handgun from his bag and pulling the trigger, yet even after emptying the magazine, he couldn’t inflict the slightest damage on the figure, not more than five meters away.
"Let me tell you three good things," said the figure clad in a refined suit, golden collar pins gleaming, and wearing a skull mask. His raspy voice, heavy with oppression, made the murderer, who had just completed a killing, want to tremble.
"First, a real member of Libra never uses firearms."
As the words fell, the figure stepped closer, and the murderer tried to step back only to find his legs were so heavy he couldn’t even move a step.
"Second, a real member of Libra takes no possessions."
Another phrase was spoken, and the figure, like an evil ghost crawled from hell, had already approached, and the murderer fell to the ground but still tried desperately to crawl away.
But the figure was already standing in front of him, bowing down. From within the skull mask, two ghostly lights seemed to flicker—
"Third, Libra does not reject imitators, as long as justice is carried out in the name of Libra, one can be considered as a member of Libra."
These words seemed to bring a glimmer of hope to the murderer, who seized the brief pause to shout loudly:
"That man was a bastard, uncompassionate in wealth, liked to take advantage of female employees in the company, even drove two employees to suicide, he was not a good person, I was maintaining justi..."
"Don’t misunderstand," the man in the skull mask cut him off, grabbed his neck with a single hand, and lifted him up—
"What I mean is not to invite you to join Libra, but to tell you, when you are regarded as a member of Libra and yet contravene Libra’s rules, it means you are already on the execution list."
The chilling voice emerged from underneath the skull mask, but the murderer could no longer make any sound.
Casually dropping the corpse on the ground, the man pulled out a card from his chest. Unlike the typical Libra Card, this card’s back was not the usual motto but the well-known ten covenants.
...
The next day, inside the villa where the murder had occurred, a group of police officers were busy organizing the crime scene. Outside the villa, a group of people dressed in police uniforms were quietly conversing—
"Mr. R, it’s another copycat." A young man, flipping through the dossier he had just received from the police, frowned and said. With the attention brought by the Olympic Games, the group known as Libra’s notoriety had grown, leading to the emergence of copycats.
This posed many problems for the work of the Military Intelligence Ninth Bureau.
"It looks like another wasted trip." Mr. R, a middle-aged man, shook his head, intending to leave when he heard a series of hurried footsteps. His colleague, who had just gone to answer a phone call, was now quickly approaching.
From experience, Mr. R immediately realized that this situation was perhaps not a simple imitation.
As he cast a glance, the returning colleague immediately spoke up:
"Mr. R, a corpse was found in a park about two hundred meters from Jowood District subway station number 3. Considering the possessions and weapons found on the body, along with certain physical characteristics, we can almost certainly conclude that this is the perpetrator of the case."
"This kind of matter should just be reported to the West Vila Field," Mr. R responded irritably, but his subordinate immediately added:
"However, we found a Libra card on this person, but not the common kind. Its back contains a list of ten covenants."
"A card with ten covenants... Was this the one we had identified as a copycat?" Mr. R had some recollection of this card because, unlike other crude imitations, there were a few recently found cards of exquisite workmanship and materials. If the quote on the back wasn’t from Sherlock Holmes, they would have been unable to distinguish their authenticity through technical means.
But now, it seemed that these cards were perhaps not as straightforward as they had imagined.
"Could it be another rule of the Mutated ghost?" Mr. R furrowed his brows. After the mutation of the ghost to Abnormality, more rules appearing was not impossible, but there were usually traces to follow...
"Is there any mention of this in that book?" Mr. R thought of the novel that could be considered the source of the ghost’s mutation into Abnormality and immediately asked; he had no doubts about the publisher having any issues.
Based on their experience, the mutation of the ghost into Abnormality was molded by its own created legend, but the Libra organization was different. The initial prototype was supposed to be that "Demon" ghost spreading coins, clearly intending to debut with legends like trading with demons. However, the popularity of the novel forcibly twisted the ghost, leading to the creation of "Libra."
This almost completely overturned the ghost’s original legend, so it had to be a coincidence.
However, such coincidences were not without benefits, as unlike the ghost that actively created legends to undergo mutation, those inadvertently twisted and hence mutated often exhibited more uncontrollable weaknesses.
Thus, that novel could even serve as a guidebook to tackle this ghost.
However, to Mr. R’s disappointment, several of his subordinates all shook their heads in unison; but, that could not really be blamed—
If the novel had records related to this type of ten covenants card, it would never have been considered a copycat.
With this thought, Mr. R immediately pulled out his phone, and soon, Ms. Q’s voice came through—
"I remember you went to investigate the ’Libra murder case’, was it not a copycat?"
"It was a copycat, alright, but there is another discovery," Mr. R, although speaking into the phone, still shook his head before continuing:
"Check the details regarding the card with ten covenants... the one with high-quality craftsmanship on the back list, and also check if there were any other copycat cases around the time of his death."
"No problem, give me ten minutes." Ms. Q’s voice had not yet faded when the call ended. Ten minutes later, Mr. R’s phone rang again...
