Chapter 139: Chapter 139 The True Demon Always Tempts One to Fall
"Not right, still not right, where exactly did it go wrong?" Bennita stood in the kitchen, taking small bites of today’s lunch. Generally speaking, lunches in Victoria were often made by reheating leftovers from dinner the night before or simply putting together sandwiches or burgers that were prepped for breakfast in the morning.
But these days, Bennita would prepare a particularly lavish lunch every noon, not to treat herself while her husband was rewarded at work, but to recreate that taste from her memory.
"The tenderness is about right, but it doesn’t have that increasingly fragrant flavor the more you chew it, and this potato salad, the texture is far too off! The other party made it in front of me, so why is there such a big gap?"
Despondently setting down her fork, Bennita’s face showed clear disappointment. Although her cooking skills had improved vastly over the past month, even surpassing the taste in some family restaurants on the street, the moment she recalled that weekend when her husband’s hopeful eyes turned into profound disappointment upon tasting the food, it filled her heart with frustration and humiliation.
"Betting the dignity of a housewife, I must reproduce that seared veal dish!"
Bennita made up her mind and quickly finished the lunch on her plate, then headed to her computer, waiting for the machine to boot up.
However, today she could not afford to waste time sparring with those spinsters from Bitch Lake; in fact, she hadn’t spent any time on such matters for a whole week.
As the monitor displayed the familiar desktop, she quickly opened the browser, typed in a website from her favorites, and as the page loaded, a forum frequently used by housewives appeared.
Upon seeing the interface, Bennita was surprised to find that the posts she expected to be at the top were not there. Instead, there were many inflammatory, unproductive threads.
Had it been before, Bennita would have immediately joined the war, spewing venom at those "unable to marry off" bitches. However, she had no such plans today, but instead opened MSN and indeed saw a few familiar ladies discussing something.
She immediately started typing—
Witch Bayonetta: What’s happened? Didn’t that gentleman show up yesterday?
Mrs. Smith: We’re discussing just that. I’ve asked around, and none of the nearby communities have any news of him.
Longing to See Mr. Demon Again: Maybe it’s work-related. After all, the gentleman said he was just using any kitchen to have some good food after work; perhaps he wasn’t in this area yesterday?
Culinary Apprentice: Never mind that. Have you guys tried that "fried fish" from Mrs. Lola’s house?
So Bored, Want to Date: It’s too difficult. I had someone check for me, and it’s supposed to be a dish from Yan Country. Although Mrs. Lola’s description was simple, it’s said that it takes over a decade of culinary skills to recreate it, plus there were some slight modifications for Victoria’s dietary habits.
Lola Regretful: Speaking of which, wasn’t the previous dish also from Yan Country? The round-shaped hamburger steak.
So Bored, Want to Date: It’s called ’Lion’s Head’ or something, also known as ’Sunflower Cut Meat’—it’s all very strange... It seems like Yan Country people are great cooks. Do you think that gentleman could be a Yan Country demon?
Mrs. Smith: He does look like he’s Asian, but do they have demons and hell in Yan Country? Their faith is different from ours, right?
Culinary Apprentice: Who knows for sure? We even have Asian members of the parliament now, so it’s normal for Hell to have Asian demons, right? Perhaps before coming to Bakerland, this gentleman worked over in Yan Country?
"I want to see Mr. Demon again: Okay! I’ve decided, I’m going to learn Yan Country’s language!"
"Life is so boring, I really want to fall in love: Wake up, even if you learn it, you won’t have the opportunity to start a conversation..."
"I want to see Mr. Demon again: How will I know if I don’t try?"
...
Seeing the MSN conversation stray off-topic, Bennita slumped back in her chair, flipping through the recipes of the past few days repeatedly.
It had been more than ten days since she last encountered the dark-haired, brown-eyed Mr. Demon.
His appearance didn’t seem coincidental; shortly thereafter, housewife forums whispered rumors of a man who would borrow kitchens and ingredients to make dinner, asking for a portion of the food as payment. As more sightings cropped up, the frequented forum section by the housewives started compiling the dishes made by the gentleman and the remembered processes, quickly establishing a norm.
And with the exchanges on the forums, she was pulled into an MSN group chat built by those who had firsthand experiences. In their interactions, a relatively clear picture of the gentleman emerged.
According to the consensus, the gentleman seemed to be from Hell, simply "off-duty" and using the kitchen to partake in the food of the mortal world.
He understood a sort of "magic" that could freeze a person in place or make them vanish, and although he seemed harmless, inferences from the details of his speech suggested that his so-called "job" might be far from pleasant.
The group discussions concluded that just as real-world police and gangs exist, Hell and Heaven might assign demons and angels to every area on Earth to carry out special work, such as angels leading people towards good, punishing sinners, while demons tempt others into sin. This gentleman was probably the demon recently assigned to work the day shift in Bakerland. The recent severe crimes in Bakerland might very well be related to this new arrival.
After all, it wasn’t hard to understand that new management might try to make a splash to assert their capabilities—a common workplace phenomenon.
As for any contradictions with the Cross Sect’s definition of Hell and Purgatory... The Bible had undergone so many revisions, who was to say their interpretations were error-free?
Maybe the truth was as the "Cooking Apprentice" guessed; before coming to Bakerland, he had worked in Yan Country, grown accustomed to the delicious food of that culinary-rich nation. That would explain his difficulty in adapting upon his arrival in Bakerland and his choice to cook for himself after work.
"What a pity that Mr. Demon seems to randomly find nearby kitchens stocked with ingredients; the chances of running into him again are just too low!"
Bennita stretched vigorously, her eyes scanning over the recipes, reminiscing about the tastes of the food she had eaten, and couldn’t help her mouth begin to water.
At that moment, she was absolutely certain that the gentleman was a true demon, for he had plunged her deeply into the mortal sin of Gluttony in less than two hours...
"Arrest arrest arrest..."
Suddenly, the sound of police sirens echoed from outside the window. Surprisingly, Bennita felt no fear at the noise, nor did she ponder over the possibility someone may have fallen victim. Instead, there was a hint of anticipation—
"If a crime has occurred, could it be that Mr. Demon is on duty again? Will he appear today? And given the proximity, might he visit my home once more?"
