Chapter 137: Chapter 137 Madam, you don’t want to either...
Bennita Nordman was a young housewife; her husband held an executive position at a company, and even though they paid for their two children to attend a prestigious school, their lifestyle was still quite comfortable.
Though Bennita led a prosperous life, it wasn’t without its troubles, for example, ever since she became a full-time housewife, she always encountered some mentally ill folks who verbally attacked her as if she were a parasite on society.
But as a well-educated woman of the new era, Bennita didn’t care about the slander. She even often expressed her love for her current life on her social media, labeling those who inexplicably bothered her as "unable to get married," "uncharming," "envious of others’ lives," "ugly women." She also made sure to maintain good relationships with other housewives in the community so as not to be isolated and alone in a verbal battle.
In fact, housewives, who just needed to manage household chores, had much more leisure time than career women who had to go to work, and on the internet, free time meant combat power.
After an intense session on a popular forum, Bennita Nordman, feeling satisfied, closed the web page, unconcerned about what those crazy women might say next, and opened a local community group chat to start conversations with nearby housewives.
This was her daily essential routine, not only to build good relationships with her neighbors but also to gain more information on everything from which ingredients were currently cheap to the ones about to become expensive, to high academic institution rankings and how to better educate her children. Like how salespeople needed customer information, housewives had their own battlegrounds.
"Have you heard? The recent safety conditions are terrible! There have been several vicious homicides in Jowood District, and the perpetrator even managed to bring one victim back to her home, then killed her in front of her family..."
"I don’t understand what the officers at West Vila Field are doing. It’s been so long and the criminal is still not caught. I’m terrified every day when I go out to buy groceries."
"I heard it was a terrorist attack? There’s been an explosion at a large cathedral in East District! It seems it was targeted against the Bakerland Olympic Games..."
"I don’t think those are related. Just last night, there was a murder near Tasoke River, that of a streetwalker. Some say it’s a case of Jack the Ripper in this new era..."
"Don’t even go so far, in the neighboring community recently there’s been a pervert stuffing letters with kids’ names into people’s houses, mimicking those from the ’Harry Potter’ Magic School. It’s clearly the work of a perverse mind..."
"That’s right, they even know the children’s names in detail. It’s utterly disgusting. Everyone should keep a closer watch on their kids and not let the pervert deceive them!"
...
Watching the housewives’ casual talk, Bennita secretly felt relieved. Her own two children attended a full-time boarding school, and their residential community had fairly good security, so there was no need to worry about being targeted by a pervert. Knowing that some comments could be annoying to others, she chimed in a few times and smoothly joined the conversation.
After about two hours of chat, an alarm went off on Bennita’s phone. She took out her phone, casually stopped the alarm, stood up, and picked up her shopping cart to head to the supermarket to buy ingredients for dinner.
...
The shopping was uneventful until Bennita was about to return home when she unexpectedly saw someone familiar.
"Good afternoon, Officer Pang Laisi!"
The middle-aged policeman in uniform, hearing the greeting, immediately turned around and after a brief pause, smiled and said:
"Good afternoon, Mrs. Nordman, are you planning to have mashed potatoes today?"
"Um, the potatoes at the supermarket were quite good today." After some small talk with the community police officer, Bennita finally asked the question she was curious about,
"Officer Pang Laisi, are you patrolling?"
"Um, recently the whole of Bakerland has been unsettled, there have even been several vicious home invasion and murders, and I heard that the Empress has been alarmed. Even the chief of police and the superintendent are patrolling the streets..." Officer Pang Laisi, the community police officer, complained a bit and then seemed to realize that such a negative attitude wasn’t suitable for him, so he quickly added:
"Mrs. Nordman, you should also be careful when you go out, and make sure to set up the emergency alert on your phone!"
"Is it that serious?" Bennita’s expression also turned grave, and although the security in her community was very good, it was obviously more than just routine.
"For now, it’s mainly in the East District and Jowood District, but haven’t there been rumors of LT fetish nearby recently? In any case, it couldn’t hurt to be cautious!"
Listening to Pang Laisi’s deliberately light-hearted answer, Bennita suddenly felt like danger was everywhere, but after all, this was the neighborhood where she had lived for many years, and she quickly overcame her psychological barrier.
It must be said, Officer Pang Laisi was indeed a warmhearted and responsible policeman. Although he didn’t say it, he kept Bennita company, chatting until they reached her front door before finally saying goodbye and leaving.
As the key turned, Bennita’s mood finally relaxed a bit, not until the door closed again did she finally breathe a sigh of relief.
"Am I being too nervous. Being alone at home really does make one jump at shadows, maybe I’ll hold a tea party with the neighbors’ wives tomorrow."
As Bennita was putting away the groceries she had just bought, she muttered to herself, and for a moment, her enthusiasm for cooking dwindled.
"Forget it, I’ll just make something simple today, save some ingredients so I don’t have to go out tomorrow, the day after tomorrow I’ll ask Jones to go grocery shopping with me... hmm, maybe I should get a bigger refrigerator..."
While peeling potatoes, Bennita talked to herself. For her, cooking with fresh ingredients every day used to be a source of pride as a full-time housewife, but the recent situation forced her to consider stockpiling food.
However, just then, she suddenly felt someone lightly tap her back twice, and at the same time, a gentle voice with a hint of a poetic temperament also came from behind her:
"Ma’am, being distracted while cooking is an insult to the ingredients!"
Hearing this strange man’s voice, Bennita’s heart instantly dropped to the abyss, and she couldn’t help but recall the news she had seen earlier. Her whole body felt as if it had fallen into an ice cave. She wanted to plead for mercy, but found that her throat couldn’t make a sound. And as the man in a black suit and wearing a white half-mask appeared in her field of vision, her fear escalated further.
Tears involuntarily slid down her cheeks, but Bennita realized that the man was now standing in the place where she "worked" every day, dazzlingly handling the ingredients she had just bought.
"Madam, the kitchen is no place for crying. You wouldn’t want the dinner your husband eats to have the taste of your tears, would you?"
