Chapter 44: Special power
"Lira, please wake up!"Chelsie’s voice was trembling as she cast the healing spell. "Lira, please wake up!"
[Romani girl, how is the woman?] Carmen called out as she dodged each of the Doppelshades’ relentless attacks. [How much longer do you need to heal her?]
"Just a little more, Carmen," Chelsie replied hastily. "I-I just need a little more time. Please, keep distracting that creature."
[Very well, Romani girl. I’ll try to keep its attention for as long as—]
Suddenly, the doppleshade in Carmen’s form appeared in front of Carmen and launched a fierce attack. Blow after blow rained down, and in seconds, Carmen was down, her body weakening rapidly.
"Oh no, Carmen!" Chelsie’s face turned pale as she saw Carmen lying weakly on the floor. No, no... I—I have to protect Lira. No matter what."
Grabbing her staff, Chelsie launched an attack at the doppleshade, which had now taken her form. But it was no use. The creature easily dodged every one of Chelsie’s attacks. Then, without hesitation, it struck back with a powerful blow, sending Chelsie hurtling into the air.
"Ugh...this thing... this thing is powerful." Chelsie struggled to stand up. "I-I can’t fight it at all."
A tense expression appeared on Chelsie’s face as she saw Doppleshade walking towards her. Her body quivered as the Doppleshade’s rows of sharp teeth became clearer and clearer, causing her to stand still. It then swung its hand and prepared to kill Chelsie.
"No,-no... I... I don’t want to die here! Chelsie immediately closed her eyes. "I don’t want to die in-"
"Cling!"
"Chelsie, hold on."
"Sh-Shaan?" Chelsie’s eyes flew open in disbelief. "H-how is this possible?"
"There’s no time to explain," Shaan said as he blocked the Doppleshade’s attack aimed at Chelsie. "Robin and I will take care of this creature. You must save Nalira and get out of here as quickly as possible."
"B-but what about you?" Chelsie stammered. "I can’t just—"
"Don’t worry about me. Nalira needs your help more than I do. You have to get her out of here now!’
".... a-alright. " Chelsei stretched herself as she walked towards Nalira. "Just...Just be careful, Shaan."
Shaan launched an offensive counterattack at the doppleshade, but it was so fast that none of his attacks could hit the creature.
"Argh, damn it!" Shaan growled. "I can’t land a single hit. Robin Hood, use your arrows to slow it down!"
[I get it, Shaan.]
Robin Hood simply shot his arrow at the doppleshade and tried to stall the movement. But the Doppleshade was not a weak opponent like the other dark creatures they’ve fought before. It could dodge all of Robin Hood’s attacks so easily that Robin Hood himself had a hard time fighting it.
[Damn. This thing turned out to be-]
’Slash!’
"Robin Hood!"
Doppleshade’s hard punch directly paralyzed Robin Hood, injuring him badly. Shaan, who saw that, dashed off at full speed, trying to attack Doppleshade with all his might.
"Take this, you damn-"
But alas, the Doppleshade managed to block Shaan’s attack and used its long arms to choke Shaan’s neck. It was becoming more and more tight as time went on, making it difficult for Shaan to breathe.
"Nnngh- s-stop- grkk! I... c-can’t... breathe-" Shaan’s breathing was becoming more and more difficult, and his vision began to blur.
’Am... am... I’m going to die here?’
In the depths of his despair, he instantly recalled Aunt Isabel’s face. It directly reminded him of the promise he had made to her earlier. A promise to meet Aunt Isabel after Shaan accomplished his first assignment, and they would enjoy the vegetable soup together.
’No... I... I can’t die here! I must make it. I must make it to-
’Ding!’
[Congratulations! You have successfully activated the special skill: Aspira Ignis.]
[Aspira Ignis power remaining: 100%]
’Aspira Ignis?’
In an instant, he could feel a mysterious stream of energy flowing through him. Somehow, the energy boosted his energy and strength, causing him to instantly swing the dual short swords in his hand.
’Slash!’
Shaan’s slash cut off the Doppleshade’s arm, allowing him to break free from the creature’s grip. A weird, pitch-black liquid spurted out of the Doppleshade’s hand, making the creature groan in pain.
"Finally. Shaan took a deep breath. ’Wh-What the hell just happened? How... how was I able to cut that thing so easily?"
However, even though Shaan managed to injure the creature, it didn’t mean he could enjoy himself since the creature had the same regeneration ability as the giant octopus. Damn. It looked impossible for him to fight against Doppleshade with his strength like this. Although he had managed to unlock his unique skill and escape death for now, it did not guarantee that he would beat a Doppleshade, which was much stronger than him.
"The only thing I can do now is run," Shaan muttered as he darted his eyes around. ’But... how am I supposed to escape before the Doppleshade finishes regenerating?’
As Shaan looked around, he suddenly noticed a collection of electrical wires in one of the puddles just a few steps behind the Doppleshade. Instantly, an idea flashed into his mind.
’That’s it. That should paralyze this creature for a moment."
[Hey, Shaan. Are you okay?]
"Yeah, I’m fine. "Shaan nodded his head. "Robin Hood, I need your help. Lure the creature over there."
[To that puddle?] Robin Hood raised an eyebrow. [Are you sure about this, Shaan?]
"I’m sure. Just trust me."
[Alright then.]
Robin Hood once again fired his arrow at the doppleshade, causing the creature to continue avoiding it, but the creature unconsciously retreated closer to the puddle. Once, it was probably a few steps closer, Shaan launched a powerful attack at the doppleshade, causing the creature to fall into the puddle.
In an instant, a spark of electricity appeared and shocked the creature’s body, knocking it unconscious for a few moments. Great, it looked like things were going just as he thought.
’This is my chance. I need to get out of here as quickly as possible.’
Without wasting a second, Shaan immediately ran away from the room as far as possible before the creature managed to get out of the puddle. He kept running until he saw that one of the trains was about to leave the place. Shaan ran after the carriage with all his might, and luckily, Chelsie saw him.
"Shaan, grab my hand!" Chelsie reached out toward him from one of the doors. "Hurry!"
Shaan grabbed Chelsie’s hand, and she tried her best to pull him up until he finally managed to get on the train. Luckily, he managed to get on the train just before it left.
"Thank you, Chelsie," Shaan wiping off his sweat.
"No— it’s us who should be thanking you, Shaan. Because of you, we survived." Chelsie replied with a warm smile. "It’s good to see you again, Shaan."
