Chapter 67: "Callian Pushed Me"
"And then he kissed me," she said.
"Your husband is really amazing!"
Then an awkward silence followed.
Eira sat on the worn couch in Sana’s small but tidy living room, sipping tea from a chipped mug.
The sound of the heater filled the silence as Sana flipped through a stack of magazines. She furrowed her brow in concentration.
"Have you thought about going back home?" Sana asked, her eyes lifted to meet Eira’s.
Eira shook her head, setting her mug down on the low coffee table. "I don’t know if I can. Callian says he wants me to, but... everything feels so complicated."
Sana leaned back in her chair. "Complicated how? He seems like he’s trying."
Eira hesitated, her fingers played with the edge of her sweater. "It’s not just him. It’s his family. His mother hates me, Vanesa keeps stirring trouble, and now Mita is back, acting like she belongs in his life."
Sana raised an eyebrow. "Mita? The one who took those photos with him?"
"No, that was Vanesa."
"So his old lover?"
"Exactly," Eira said, and her voice tightened. "It’s like they’re all working together to push me out."
Before Sana could respond, Eira’s phone buzzed on the table. She picked it up, her heart started sinking when she saw Callian’s name.
-Callian: Mita jumped from the balcony. She’s in the hospital now. My family took her there.-
Eira’s hand tightened around the phone. "What?" she whispered.
"What happened?" Sana asked, leaning forward.
"Mita..." Eira said, her voice trailing off. She quickly typed a reply.
-Eira: Is she okay? What happened?-
The response came almost instantly.
-Callian: I’ll tell you everything tomorrow. Please don’t worry.-
Eira stared at the screen. Sana touched her arm gently. "Is everything alright?"
Eira shook her head. "Mita jumped. Callian says she’s in the hospital."
"Jumped?" Sana’s eyes widened. "Why would she do that?"
"I don’t know," Eira admitted. "But I need to find out."
// At the Hospital \\
The bright, sterile lights of the hospital lobby reflected off the polished floor as Callian stormed through the entrance.
Leina was already there, sitting rigidly in a waiting room chair.
She was unreadable, but the tension in her shoulders showed her anger.
"Where is she?" Callian demanded.
Leina looked up. "Mita is in surgery. They’re saying she’ll be fine, but I don’t even know why she jumped in the first place." Her voice was calm, but her words carried a sharp edge.
Callian ran a hand through his hair, frustrated. "I don’t know either, Mother. She just—"
"You don’t know?" Leina interrupted. "You were with her, Callian! What did you do?"
His head snapped toward her. "What did I do? Are you serious right now?"
"Yes," Leina hissed, rising to her feet. "The neighbors saw you on the balcony with her before she fell. One of them even took a picture and sold it to the press. The story’s everywhere already. They’re saying you pushed her."
Callian’s jaw tightened, his fists clenched at his sides. "I didn’t push her. She was hysterical. She climbed onto the railing, and I was trying to stop her!"
"Really?" Leina crossed her arms. "Because it looks like you were arguing with her. The media is eating this up. Do you know what this will do to your reputation?"
Callian’s voice turned cold. "I don’t care about my reputation, Mother. I care about the truth."
Leina scoffed, shaking her head. "The truth? The truth doesn’t matter when the world already thinks you’re guilty."
The sound of hurried footsteps interrupted them as Mita’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anand, rushed into the waiting room. Mrs. Anand’s face was pale, her eyes red from crying.
"Where is she?" she asked in a trembling voice.
"In surgery," Leina answered smoothly.
Mrs. Anand’s gaze shifted to Callian, and her expression hardened. "How could you let this happen?"
"I didn’t ’let’ anything happen," Callian said through gritted teeth.
"Don’t lie to us," Mr. Anand said, stepping forward. "We’ve seen the reports. The picture clearly shows you standing there. Were you arguing with her? What did you say to make her jump?"
Callian took a step back, his hands raised in frustration. "I didn’t make her jump! She was upset, and I was trying to stop her. That’s all."
"Enough!" Leina snapped.
She turned to Callian. "You’ve already caused enough damage. The press is outside right now, asking questions we can’t answer. Do you understand how bad this looks?"
Callian glared at her. "The only thing I care about right now is Mita getting better. Everything else can wait."
Before Leina could respond, a doctor appeared in the doorway, removing his surgical mask. "Mrs. Anand?" he said, addressing Mita’s mother.
"Yes?" she said, rushing toward him.
"Mita is stable. She’ll need time to recover, but she’s out of danger."
Mrs. Anand let out a sob of relief, clutching her husband’s arm.
The doctor continued, "She’s asking to see Mr. Callian Reed."
The room went silent. All eyes turned to Callian, who looked stunned.
"Me?" he asked.
The doctor nodded. "She’s very insistent."
Leina stepped forward. "She’s in no state to be making decisions right now."
Callian ignored her, striding toward the doctor. "Take me to her."
// In Mita’s Hospital Room \\
The room was dim, the only light coming from a small lamp on the bedside table.
Mita lay on the bed, her pale face against the stark white sheets.
Her eyes fluttered open as Callian entered, and she gave him a weak smile.
"Callian," she murmured in a hoarse voice.
He stood at the foot of the bed, his arms crossed. "Why did you do this, Mita?"
"I... I couldn’t handle it. You hate me. Your family hates me. What else do I have left?"
Callian sighed, dragging a hand down his face. "Mita, I don’t hate you. But you can’t keep doing this—clinging to something that isn’t there."
Her lips trembled. "I just wanted to matter to you."
He softened slightly, stepping closer. "You matter, Mita. But not in the way you want. And you need to accept that."
"I—I love you, Callian."
"Mita, I need you to give the press the statement that I didn’t push you, and you did this on your own accord."
"I—I can’t..."
"Mita!" Callian furrowed his eyebrows. "I need you to clear this misunderstanding," he said in a low voice.
The door opened suddenly, and Leina stepped in. "Time’s up," she said briskly.
Callian turned to her. "Leave us alone, Mother. This is your fault as much as anyone’s."
Leina’s eyes widened. "My fault?"
"Yes," Callian snapped. "You’ve been manipulating her, pushing her into this fantasy that we could be something we’re not. And now look what’s happened."
Leina opened her mouth to respond, but Mita’s voice interrupted.
"No...," she whispered.
Both of them turned to her.
"Callian pushed me because I said Eira is going to die."
