Chapter 247: Time in the basement_Part 2
Belle moved through the dark basement until she reached the far wall. Behind an old shelf, she found the hidden wooden door Rohan had once shown her before her stomach had grown to this size, and she saw him leading Rav to bring in ice to store. She pushed it open, and a rush of cold air escaped.
It was the ice cellar, small, damp, and carved into the ground. Blocks of river ice lined the corners, insulated with straw and sawdust. In a crate near the coldest side, several dark bottles glinted in the dim light.
She reached for one of them, the cold biting her fingers. Not wanting the cold to escape, she hurriedly closed the space back to how it was and moved back, her fingers trembling as she brought the bottle closer to the heat of her lamp to heat the blood. She knelt before the cellar, waiting patiently for it to finish heating.
It took longer than expected for the blood to at least warm up. She would have taken it back to the kitchen if she didn’t fear that one of the guards would walk in on her like she knew they always did occasionally when she was in the kitchen. No matter what, she must not let them see her do this.
Belle was still waiting for the blood to melt when she felt a sudden presence in the basement, and she stiffened, her heart dropping into her stomach at the thought of someone coming in here.
But before she could panic more than necessary, she caught sight of a black cloak from the corner of her eye and slowly, subtly turned in that direction. Her eyes widened, and her heart sank deeper into the pit of her stomach.
A Grim Reaper!
Not wasting time, Belle hastily tore her eyes away from the Reaper and looked back at the bottle, trying to calm her heart and not show that she could see it. What was a Reaper doing in the basement?!
She might not know much about these creatures, but she did know one thing, they only appeared in places where someone was about to die. Just like that time in the forest during the hunt, when she had seen a reaper.
And now, here in the basement... what was it doing here?!
Although the Grim Reaper wasn’t looking in her direction, the fact that it was still there was terrifying and nerve-racking. With trembling hands, she decided to hurriedly finish what she was doing and leave—get away from the creature of the dead, whose scythe was clutched in front of it and its cloak was pulling behind it as it began to move further away from her, deeper into the darkened part of the basement, believing she couldn’t see it.
When the blood was warm enough, Belle uncapped the bottle and then stared down at the red liquid inside it. She had never thought a day would come when she would be drinking blood, but before she could even think about it or dread having it, her son seemed to take control of her movement, and the blood was in no time flowing down her throat as she gulped it down.
She did not bring the bottle down until it was empty. Belle could not believe she had just drunk blood and not felt disgusted, in fact, it felt like the most natural thing to do, like she had done it many times before.
Immediately, she felt the life inside her settle, satisfied with the blood, and the pain inside her began to fade away like it had never been there. Her muscles felt weak, and she knew she needed to sleep to regain her lost energy, but she had to go back inside to do that.
Belle was attempting to stand up when she heard another sound from the basement door, but thinking and believing it to be the Grim Reaper who had walked in that direction, she did not panic and proceeded to stand—until she turned in the direction to leave, and then she froze in shock. The empty bottle of blood fell from her grip to the floor at the sight of the person before her.
One of the guards stood right in front of her, his sword held towards her and his eyes taking in the bloodstain on her mouth and the bottle she had dropped.
"Bloody hell, you’re a vampire," he muttered, not believing how none of them had failed to notice, or how she had passed the test when no other vampire had. He had been keeping an eye on the lady, and when she left her chamber to come here, he had noticed it but did not follow her immediately so she wouldn’t suspect she was being followed.
He had allowed her to go into the basement, further making him suspicious as to why a pregnant woman would give herself the trouble of climbing down a ladder. It turned out the bitch was a fraud like their master had suspected!
"I am human," Belle said, clutching her hand to her stomach protectively as his sword was pointed in that direction. "I am not a vampire, and you have no reason to suspect me so." She was terrified, scared, but she kept it out of her voice to make the man understand before he would cut her down.
He began to advance on her, and she began to back away from his sword.
"The fuck you are. No human will drink blood like a bloodsucker! Get on your knees!" he ordered through gritted teeth, his eyes shining in controlled excitement at finally catching a vampire after he had lived his life not ever seeing one or catching them.
"Please don’t kill me," Belle pleaded as she kept moving back, not going down on her knees, as she knew the moment she did that, he would cut her down with his sword. Though the sword he held was strange—as its tip seemed to be made of wood—she knew it was sharp enough to kill. She’d never seen a sword like that before, and she looked at the wooden tip.
"A bloodsucker like you doesn’t deserve to live with humans. And we will wipe out every one of you who gets into our land," he said as he swung his sword, but Belle reflexively ducked away from it and moved in another direction.
The man was lean, unlike his partner who was big, and seeing how young he was, she could tell he believed she was a vampire he had caught and would kill to brag to his friends about.
The moment she shifted, he moved with her and swung the sword carelessly. The sharp tip grazed past her stomach, tearing her dress and grazing past her skin, bruising her. She clutched her hand to the cut and hurriedly began to step into the darkened part of the basement, knowing the young man meant to kill her without waiting for his superior’s orders.
The pain of the cut was enough to make her grit her teeth as she tried to run from the man. She would protect her child and herself no matter what. Though her heart was throbbing in fear and panic, she did not allow it to stop her from at least trying to defend herself from the man who was right on her tail.
Belle reached the end of the basement wall and realized there was no place to run to, no escape from this person. She was stuck between the walls and the monster following her. They thought of vampires as monsters, but to her, they were the greatest monsters!
She had not hurt anyone and was only trying to protect her child, but he wanted to kill her!
"You can’t run from me, vampire. My weapon is designed to kill your kind, and once it’s pierced into your chest, you will be dead," he laughed, believing because he had a weapon designed to kill a vampire, he could kill them if he came across any.
Belle couldn’t help but think if she were a vampire and had the ability to move fast, she would have taken his sword from him long before he thought about swinging it. But she was no vampire, and after taking the blood, her body was mightily heavy and exhausted.
She saw the man approach her with his sword and the lamp she had left behind in hand. Belle wrapped her arms around her belly as the light of the lamp fell on her.
"Please, don’t do this. I am human, I swear it. Have mercy on me and let me go... please," she cried desperately to him when he came closer, but the heartless man only laughed at her plea for mercy. She would not hesitate to bow and kneel to beg if he would let her go and not harm her, but from how he was laughing, she knew he would never allow her off this.
"If not for my sake, then let me go for the sake of my unborn baby... we haven’t done anything to you," she sobbed, pressing her back harder against the cold stone wall as he kept coming closer.
"When you killed an innocent maid and a servant, you showed them no mercy," the man growled. "So why should I show mercy to you and that disgusting monster growing inside you? You both deserve to die just as they did, and I’ll be the one to send you to hell with my sword."
With that, he flipped the blade in his hand, and with a sudden leap, lunged toward her, aiming the sharp tip straight at her chest.
