Chapter 243: "I’ll be back."

Belle nodded her head at his words. "I didn’t mean to hurt you..." fr\eewe.bn(o)v\el.c(o)m

"I understand that now, my love. You didn’t mean it. But don’t do that again. You’re all I have as a family, and all I need in my life. Don’t push me back into darkness," he murmured, his voice deep and husky as he pressed his lips to her skin, meaning every word he spoke.

She had brightened his days from the moment he met her, and she had shown him a new world the day she returned his heart to him. He had trusted her when he had never trusted anyone before. He didn’t want to be pushed back into that lonely darkness, a place where he existed, but didn’t feel it... a place where he had hunted for something, anything, just to make him feel alive.

She was his family now. He never wanted to turn away from her.

Family sticks together, just like she had always told him. And now, more than ever, he wanted to stick with her.

Family...

Rohan held her for a bit longer, and then gently pulled back from the hug when he noticed the sky had begun to brighten, gray light slowly spilling through the high windows.

"Isa, there is something you should know," he told her in a calm voice as he made her look up by gently cupping both her cheeks in his palms.

"What is it?" she asked, feeling relieved that he was no longer angry and that everything was finally clear between them again. Unknown to her that what he was about to say was another nightmare on itself.

He took a deep breath and then exhaled as he said, "We will have to leave you in Bimmerville for some time."

Belle blinked in confusion, as if she had misheard his words, and then asked in a small voice, "What do you mean leave me? Where are you going?"

Rohan gripped both her shoulders gently and told her about the authorities of this land discovering that vampires were here. "Once the day breaks completely, the authorities will be swarming this house for investigation, which is why we have to leave you here. You remember what I once told you, right?"

Belle remembered clearly. He had once told her that if anything were to go wrong, he would have to leave in order to protect her in this land. But never had she imagined the day would truly come, not when they had been so careful.

She felt the first thread of dread curl in her gut, and her heart began to drum faster as she sensed this wasn’t going to end well.

"I don’t want to stay here. I’ll go with you. You—"

"It’s safer for you here than anywhere else in this world," he said firmly, cutting her off. "You are human. If you do exactly as I will instruct you now, everything will be fine, and you will be free of any charges of harboring vampires. No one will lay a hand on you. No, Isa, don’t do this," he whispered, cupping her cheeks again when she began to frantically shake her head in protest at the idea of being left behind in this land.

"No... I don’t want to. I can’t stay here without you," she uttered through trembling lips, tears already filling her hazel eyes and spilling down her ivory, freckled cheeks.

"Yes, you can. I trust you will keep yourself and our son safe. Once the authorities get here, all you have to do is pretend that you did not know us. Tell them your memories are mixed up and that your," Rohan took a deep breath, hating this part of their lies,

"That your husband was killed by us and that we are keeping you against your will and forcing you to hide us in your house. They will believe you, as they know no human in their right sense will marry a vampire willingly. You do not know me or anything about me. Can you do that, my love?"

He looked down at her face with hope and trust, and Belle bit down hard on her bottom lip, torn between what to say.

If she insisted on going with them, she would only slow them down in her condition and risk them getting caught. She didn’t need to be told what had caused this sudden change in plans, because she had a feeling that what she had said to Rohan had encouraged it. Her words must have made him realize that she could live without him, because she had been willing to leave him.

"Are you going to come back for me?" she rasped quietly as she looked up at him, afraid of being left behind forever and forgotten in this unfamiliar land, where, despite having lived in it for months, only her husband made it feel like home.

"Nothing can keep me from coming back to you, my heart. Nothing. I will be back, I promise." As soon as I kill the king, he added in his mind, stroking her cheek and looking down at her face as if trying to memorize every little detail to memory.

"Where will you go?" Belle asked, trying to keep her emotions in check for now, as she could see how quickly the sky was turning bright.

"Nightbrook. We don’t have much time. I will explain the rest to you the next time we meet," he said, and then pulled her back into his arms to hug her close, stroking his hand fiercely up and down her spine.

"It won’t be long. I will come back for you. Trust me... I won’t fail you."

Belle nodded her head. "I trust you," she whispered hoarsely, even though she was worried about the fact that he was going back to Nightbrook, where it wasn’t any safer than here. She wanted to tell him not to leave her, but she valued his life more than anything. He had said he would return for her, and she would have to hold on to that promise.

"What about the baby? What if he starts demanding for you? How can I calm him?" Belle voiced out her next worry when she felt the baby move inside her. She had never been able to calm him down herself without Rohan, if he left, she would be left alone with that.

"Whenever he starts demanding... go down into the basement. Do you remember the ice cellar Rav and I made that day?"

She nodded, unable to speak, her throat too choked up with emotion.

"When it begins, go down there. I stored a few blood bottles for you. Heat them and take it. I know it won’t be easy, but that’s the only way to keep the baby calm," Rohan said softly.

As he spoke, he moved his hand down to her stomach, still holding her close, and spread his fingers gently over her large belly.

"Be an angel to Mama, son. Don’t be a brat. If you do good, I promise to give you anything you ever want in life when you are born." He promised, and he felt his son’s gentle tap against his palm, and Rohan smiled, believing he had some kind of understanding with the unborn child.

He began to pull away from the hug, but Belle acted quickly before he could pull back completely.

She clutched his shirt collar and, standing on the tips of her toes, pressed her mouth against his. At first, it was a desperate kiss, one laced with sorrow and urgency. Her lips trembled against his, parting slowly as if pleading with him not to go, knowing it was something they both couldn’t help. She tasted the remnants of sweet wine on his breath and the faint hint of blood, every detail breaking her heart all over again.

Rohan inhaled sharply, as if the kiss had stolen the breath from his lungs. His hands gripped her waist, not too tightly, but firm enough to tell her he didn’t want to let go either. He kissed her back, deeply, his lips molding to hers with heat and certainty. When her tongue brushed against his, he groaned low in his throat and responded with a hunger he hadn’t meant to show.

He tilted his head and took control, deepening the kiss until her knees weakened. His mouth moved over hers with slow, aching devotion, tasting, coaxing, memorizing. His tongue swept into her mouth again and again in long strokes, possessive and tender, as if this would have to last him for however long he would be gone. One of his hands slid up her spine to cradle the back of her head, fingers threading into her hair, while his other hand stayed at her belly, keeping their son between them.

Their breaths came faster, mingling with every kiss, until she whimpered softly and he forced himself to slow down. The kiss softened, turning into a series of lingering touches, gentle, closed-mouth caresses that said everything they couldn’t speak aloud.

At last, he drew back just a little, enough to rest his forehead against hers. Their noses brushed, their breaths still tangled, and for a long moment, neither of them opened their eyes. He held her there, his hand never leaving her belly, as if anchoring himself to his family one last time.

"I’ll come back to you," he whispered, voice thick and low. "No matter what happens, Isa... I will always come back."

"I love you," Belle whispered achingly, and he raised his eyes to hers, stared into her eyes, a small smile on his lips as he used his hand to stroke her hair lovingly.

She watched him, expecting to hear him say the words back to her, wanting to hear it before he would go, but he only leaned down, touched his lips to hers, and then slowly pulled back from her.

"I will be back." He gave her his word, but never told her what she wanted to hear so badly before he would leave.
