Chapter 85 — Power of The God of War

Chapter 85: 85 — Power of The God of War

Hearing a loud cry, Cynthia rushed into the crowd, only to realize it was a monster’s groan. Panic surged through her as she clenched the hilt of Lucian’s sword, searching for him and the others. He would be in danger without his weapon to fight them!

"Damn it. How are demons already attacking places like this?! They aren’t supposed to attack yet!"

Clenching her jaw, Cynthia dashed through the alleys, desperately trying to spot someone she recognized. Shops were blown apart by the demon’s magic, their large bricks crumbling on the ground like mere leaves in autumn. People were tossed aside like pebbles, and blood splattered onto her dark dress as she sprinted, not batting an eye, her breath coming in ragged gasps. During her search for Lucian, no matter where she looked, she could not find the demon that caused all this.

Memories flashed of her past life through her mind right before her death, the scene of Erion in fire and smoke, lifeless people laying on the ground in pools of blood while demons roamed in the streets as if it were their territory. It seemed like those memories were coming to life before her very eyes!

"Your Highness! What are you doing here?!" a deep voice called out in surprise and anger.

Cynthia looked in the direction of the voice.

"A-Adrian?" she managed to stammer, her heart racing. "Where is His Highness?" She scanned the area around him.

"He’s over there," Adrian pointed behind him, irritation etched on his face. He clearly didn’t have time to chat with the woman who had put the grand duke’s life in danger, while a demon was attacking the market!

Lucian stood on a distant rooftop, surveying the chaos—desperately searching for the demon.

"Of course he wouldn’t die without his sword now that he could wield magic too," she sighed in relief. Although unknown to her, Lucian held a sword one of his magic knights had given him.

Cynthia was lost as to what to do if she ever lost him. For a second, genuine worry gripped her chest, making it hard for her to breathe. She hadn’t planned to become a widow! After all, he was the strongest man in Selvarys and had survived countless battles with demons in her past life, so the thought of him possibly dying never crossed her mind. She needed him to execute her plan and she couldn’t afford to lose the most important person of her scheme.

Before she could think further, the monster charged her way, snapping her to come back to reality.

It was large and round, almost similar to a boar, around three meters high. Its eyes were dark, with irises as white as snow. Its claws were razor sharp as the blade Cynthia possessed, and its mouth gaped wide, ready to devour anything that came in its path.

Cynthia froze momentarily, scanning for a weak spot at first glance. However, she couldn’t find one. She had fought demons before, but none like this. They were smaller, and their magic wasn’t strong enough to blow away buildings. This demon was different—far stronger than any she had encountered during the war!

"Run!" Lucian shouted, grabbing the hilt of a sword Cynthia hadn’t noticed before, his jaw clenched, taking a step towards the large creature.

Cynthia didn’t hear his warning, drowned out by the demon’s deafening roar. Without a second thought, with the sword still in her hand, she tore off the bottom part of her dress as if it were the most natural thing to do, leaving it just above her knees. Though she was accustomed to fighting in a knight’s uniform, she couldn’t back down now. This was her chance to confront once again one of the very beings that had caused her death in her past life.

With a twisted smirk on her lips, she surged forward, determined to climb onto the giant creature’s massive body.

"What are you doing?!" Lucian shouted, bewildered as he followed her every movement.

Is she not scared?!

Cynthia kept the hilt on the sword clenched tightly in her grip. She struck the blade in its back, causing it to groan louder in pain. Its’ cry almost caused her eardrums to burst, being on top of it. However, determined to kill it, she kept climbing, another strike from her sword pierced onto the demon’s flesh, blue liquid dripping down the blade and running down her arm.

"Come and help me!" She turned to face the knights who stood on the roofs, shocked to see a woman fighting a demon.

It would have been unimaginable to them just a few minutes ago, however, witnessing it, they couldn’t take their eyes off the absurd scene. Women in Selvarys could barely work outside, and the grand duchess was wielding a sword, fearlessly affronting the demon like it was nothing. Additionally, only the grand duke could fight a demon on his own, while the other knights always had to go in pairs in case one of them fell prey to the demon’s blows, however... strangely, she was able to withstand being close to the demon without being killed yet.

Nodding in agreement, the knights jumped on the large creature and all began attacking it at once. Soon, the demon would no longer fire magic at them, due to its wounds and blue blood dripping from his whole body. Yet, he seemed to still have enough strength to shake off all that were on its back. Including Cynthia who was flown like a ragdoll through the air. His claw brushing against her knee, scratching it.

She fell to the ground, holding in the pain. She had no time to show any weakness with this monstrosity in front of her terrorizing the market.

Witnessing the scene before him, Lucian couldn’t keep still any longer.

As the knights and Cynthia fell to the ground, Adrian and Lucian decided to step in.

Adrian was unsure how to react with the grand duchess stuck in the monster, however, now that she was gone, he could attack freely without paying much attention to not hurt the grand in the process.

"Your Highness, let’s do this," the red-haired man said, turning back to the dark-haired man, who nodded in agreement.

They both leaped at the demon—Lucian attacking from the front, while Adrian aimed for its blind spot from behind. Lucian struck head-on, while Adrian targeted its vulnerable areas; however, the demon remained unmoved, despite its groans growing louder. It stubbornly lashed out with wild magic spells, as if it had began to recover from it’s earlier attacks, desperate to knock out its aggressors. But its aim became erratic, causing even more destruction in the marketplace, with random bystanders being killed in an instant, while Lucian and Adrian effortlessly dodged the attacks.

"Step back for now!" Lucian shouted, realizing the monster wasn’t going down anytime soon.

"Damn it! Why won’t it die?" he cursed, stomping the ground, while Adrian jumped back onto a nearby roof.

Seizing an opportunity, Adrian attacked the demon from the flank, only to be kicked across the street, crashing into one of the broken buildings.

Seeing his knight and friend hurled into the rubble, rage surged through Lucian as the demon turned to finish Adrian off.

Without hesitation, Lucian rushed forward.

"Don’t you dare attack him!!" he shouted to draw its attention, charging alone with his sword held high. Gathering all his magic power, he leaped and brought his blade down on the demon’s neck with all his might, leaving a deep gash.

The demon clawed at its throat, gasping for air as it staggered backward and writhing in pain. Eventually, it collapsed to the ground, its eyes rolling back, its limbs slowly stopped moving— it had died.

As the demon lay lifeless, Cynthia looked up at Lucian, awestruck by his strength. She had heard about his swordsmanship mastering, but today she witnessed it—the power of the God of War— a name probably made for him— that everyone in Selvarys and Eldoria spoke of in her past life.

As she tried to stand up, another hiss escaped her. She had momentarily forgotten that she hurt her ankle. She used the ground as support to stand up, while the other knights, although injured, stormed to the grand duke.

"Are you alright, Your Highness?" One of them asked, while others assisted Adrian to stand up.

"The monster truly intended to kill me," Adrian chuckled, with a soft sigh.

"It’s not like you to joke in such critical moments," Lucian’s gaze sharpened as he looked at the red-haired man.

"I... apologize," Adrian lowered his gaze. He wanted to easen up the tense situation, however, he wasn’t Dylan who could make jokes at any moment yet he wanted to give it a try.

"It’s alright... all of you, go home and tend to your injuries," Lucian ordered his knights.

"It’s not safe yet, Your Highness! We can’t leave you behind now!" One of the knights objected, a frown of worry on his face.

"Go to the mansion and send the other knights. We... need to clean up this mess," Lucian ordered, looking at the practically destroyed marketplace which was fine just a few hours ago.

"Alright..."

Unwillingly, the mages among the knights used teleportation, and soon vanished into the violet light.

"Your Highness," Cynthia slowly spoke, carefully stepping toward him to her injured ankle.

Lucian, who had almost forgotten about her present, turned to face her.

Before Cynthia could speak, Lucian spoke.

"We need to look for Princess Arisia now!"

"Huh? You didn’t send her back to the mansion?" Cynthia frowned, shocked to hear that. All this time, she assumed Lucian had sent the princess back to the estate as soon as all this unfolded!

"The carriage was too far away. It was safer to send her to the temple which is just beside the marketplace."

"But what if the demon attacked the temple?"

Hearing her question, Lucian narrowed his eyes, looking at her as if she had said the most ridiculous thing a person could.

"Demons don’t attack temples, Your Highness...."
