Chapter 74: The Most Powerful Being Alive.
"I think I should go home," Aria said, picking up her purse from the floor.
Damien frowned. "You’re leaving with the book?"
Aria let out a frustrated sigh. "After everything that’s happened today, I need time to think. I walked into this house planning to organize it and gather a few things for my grandmother. Instead, I found the place in disarray, discovered a book hidden beneath my grandma’s bedroom floor—one that, apparently, my bloodline is meant to protect—and then watched a creepy woman vanish into thin air. And as if that wasn’t enough, you decided to kiss me, only to turn around and tell me that not being marked means Tristan doesn’t truly consider me his wife. So forgive me, Damien, if all I want to do right now is go home!"
Without waiting for a response, she turned on her heel and headed for the door. But before she could leave, Damien grabbed her wrist, stopping her in place.
"I’m sorry for kissing you," he said, his voice softer this time.
Aria exhaled sharply. "Let’s talk about this another time."
"No," Damien countered. "I know you too well. You’ll never want to talk about it, and I don’t want one stupid mistake to push you away."
Seeing that she was at least listening, he released her wrist and continued.
"I wasn’t in my right mind, Aria. I had just regained consciousness, and for a moment... I lost myself. And for that, I’m sorry. But listen to me—you cannot tell Tristan about that book. You can’t trust him."
Aria’s brows furrowed. "Why wouldn’t I trust him? Tristan has never given me a reason to doubt him."
Damien’s gaze darkened. "The fact that he married you is reason enough."
She blinked. "What?"
"Have you never questioned why he married a girl with no pack?" Damien pressed. "Think about it. What if Tristan already knew about the book? What if he knew you came from the bloodline meant to protect it? What if he married you just to get it?"
Aria stared at him in disbelief. "Are you seriously suggesting that Tristan knew this book existed, somehow figured out that I was its protector, and then decided to marry me just to get his hands on it? Does that even make sense to you? And did you forget that the book is useless without its master? A master who no one even knows!"
Damien’s expression remained grim. "I wouldn’t call a book that healed me ’useless.’ You saw its power. If I’m right, and that book falls into Tristan’s hands, then he won’t need you anymore."
Aria didn’t respond. Instead, she looked down at the book in her hands. It felt ordinary, with no trace of power radiating from it—yet she had seen it heal Damien. That strange woman had told her the book was asleep, but was that a lie?
Damien’s voice cut through her thoughts. "Aria, do you understand what I’m saying? You can’t trust anyone with this book. Not even Tristan."
She met his gaze, her expression unreadable, then turned and walked out without another word.
Damien cursed under his breath. Pulling out his phone, he dialed the same number he had once messaged. The moment the call connected, he snapped, "Why didn’t your damn witch tell me I wouldn’t be able to touch the book?"
"What do you mean?" a voice on the other end asked.
"My hand started withering the moment I touched it! The only person who can handle that book without dying is Aria. And what’s worse—we’re not the only ones looking for it. Apparently, the book has a master, and only the master can open it."
"The book has a master?" The voice replied in surprise.
"That’s what the witch who knocked me unconscious told Aria."
"Then... is it Aria?"
Damien gritted his teeth. "No. She couldn’t open it. Which means the master is someone else. And I have a gut feeling that it’s Tristan."
The voice on the other end cursed. "Then let’s hope your gut feeling is wrong. Because if that book recognizes Tristan as its master, he’ll become the most powerful being alive."
Damien ended the call, his mind racing. It can’t be Tristan. It can’t be.
If Tristan really was the master of the book, then Damien had to find a way to stop him. Magic always had loopholes. There had to be a way to open the book without its master.
And since Aria was the only one who could touch it... then he would need her to find this loophole.
Which meant one thing: he had to rekindle the love she once had for him before he left two years ago.
.....
Aria arrived home, holding the book tightly in her hand. Just as she reached for the door, Damien’s words echoed in her mind.
"Why would he marry a girl with no pack?"
Even Hailey had asked her the same question before.
Could Damien be right? Was that why Tristan refused to mark her or sleep with her?
The thought that it could be true broke her heart. She was already used to him to the point that she couldn’t even remember how her life was before meeting him.
Aria opened the door, and with how quiet the house was, she could tell that Tristan wasn’t at home, but just to confirm her thought, Aria checked his study and did not find him there.
Instead of leaving, Aria walked to his desk and dropped the book she had been holding. She then collected the document that was lying on the desk, curious to know what was in it.
Aria opened the document and saw that it contained a list of properties, shares in different companies, company names, and how much has been invested into them.
As Aria flipped towards the end of the page, a frown formed on her face as she saw that all these things belonged to Tristan and he was transferring them all to her name.
Aria closed the document with only one question in mind. Why is Tristan transferring everything he owns to her?
