Chapter 286: Chapter 286: Missing Her, Really Missing Her (4)_1
The smell of disinfectant in the hospital was strong. The scene of the surgery that day floated before Bai Liyan’s eyes.
He had tried his best, but the reality was worse than he had expected.
He thought he was a genius, but at that moment, he realized his knowledge and brain were inadequate.
Even now, he often thought of that scene in his dreams and couldn’t fall asleep.
Ji Yunhuan’s eyes were fixed on Bai Liyan. His expression was strange. She thought he was angry, but after a while, it didn’t seem so.
Bai Liyan took a step back and propped himself up against the windowsill, looking very embarrassed.
Ji Yunhuan wanted to ignore him. But then she thought of Aunt Bai’s pleading eyes.
If something happened to this family, wouldn’t it be her fault?
"Are you afraid of the hospital?" she asked Bai Liyan.
Bai Liyan pursed his lips and said nothing. Ji Yunhuan observed his reaction. It was exactly like when Chenchen left, and she smelled the disinfectant.
"Heh..." she laughed at Bai Liyan. "You, once called a genius Dr. Bai, now can’t stay in the hospital for even five minutes. No wonder you left the medical field. You simply can’t work like before."
"Get out!" Bai Liyan, humiliated by her mockery, shouted with his last bit of strength.
Ji Yunhuan was about to leave when she saw his body slump to one side. She walked over and supported him. This man, whom she thought she would never forgive and had nothing to do with her, now evoked a bit of sympathy.
She helped Bai Liyan out of the hospital building and let him sit down on a wooden bench in the garden. She looked at him. "Rest here for a while. The doctor said your mother is fine. It’s just an old ailment. Get someone else to look after her. Since you can’t handle it, why did you come?"
Bai Liyan looked at her. His pale face showed complex emotions.
Wasn’t she supposed to take revenge on him? Why did she care?
Ji Yunhuan felt awkward under his gaze. Given their relationship, she seemed overly concerned about him.
She quickly found an excuse. "That day at the hotel, you helped me. Now, I’m returning the favor by caring for you."
As she spoke, Ji Yunhuan sat down beside him.
She hadn’t forgotten the task Aunt Bai had given her.
She looked at the silent Bai Liyan and tried to comfort him. "Chenchen’s incident happened a long time ago. I admit I always disliked you, but after so long, I’ve thought through many issues. You don’t need to dwell on it. You’re feeling guilty, giving up on your dreams, even coming to the hospital stresses you out. It makes me feel really guilty too."
Bai Liyan was surprised she would say such things to him. "What do you mean by that?"
Ji Yunhuan was also surprised she wanted to say such things to him.
She said, "Don’t be surprised. Given our relationship, I don’t have to say these things. But your mother asked me to help you. I can’t do much, just give advice. Whether you can come to terms with it is your own matter."
"About Chenchen, I’m very sorry." After a long time, Bai Liyan seemed to understand her meaning. His apologetic voice floated over on the breeze.
Ji Yunhuan met his eyes and realized he was truly remorseful.
She couldn’t help but ask, "Is this why you helped me at the hotel that day?"
Bai Liyan nodded. "Sort of."
"Why were you at my wedding? You weren’t there with Qi Cheng, were you?" Ji Yunhuan remembered she hadn’t seen Bai Liyan when she went to find Qi Cheng.
Bai Liyan did not hide it. "I’ve been keeping an eye on you, always wanting to do something for you. That day was just convenient."
"But your mother took it seriously. She thought there was something between us and came to my restaurant several times to inquire," Ji Yunhuan said helplessly.
Bai Liyan looked at her. "I really want to marry you."
"..."
Seeing Ji Yunhuan stunned, he explained, "It seems to me you really need help, don’t you? I’m willing to help you."
He spoke sincerely, but Ji Yunhuan felt shocked. "Doing this would offend Qi Cheng. Aren’t you two best friends?"
She knew Bai Liyan cared a lot about Qi Cheng.
Before, when Qi Cheng was injured, Bai Liyan had been very angry. He truly treated Qi Cheng as a friend.
So Ji Yunhuan was surprised by his decision.
She knew Bai Liyan must be driven by his unresolved guilt.
Even though she needed a man to get rid of Qi Cheng, her pride wouldn’t allow her to use Bai Liyan.
She didn’t want to hurt Qi Cheng that deeply.
Even though she still hated him for what he did to Li Longtao.
Bai Liyan looked into the distance. Whether or not he offended Qi Cheng, things had already reached this point. In Qi Cheng’s eyes, he was already an enemy. "Do you think Qi Cheng doesn’t already hate me?"
"You don’t need to help me for Chenchen’s sake. It’s enough. I don’t need it." Ji Yunhuan stood up.
Bai Liyan wanted to say something but held back.
He purely wanted to help her. If she didn’t need it, there was no need to force it.
Ji Yunhuan stood up and went aside to make a phone call.
Bai Liyan sat on the bench. Although he could talk to her, his body still felt extremely uncomfortable.
That feeling as if the whole world was upside down.
He silently watched her back. Her slender body housed the coldest heart.
Flowers bloomed profusely in the garden.
Occasionally, the sound of birds could be heard.
Qi Cheng sat in his woodworking studio, focused on carving something in his hand—it was Ji Yunhuan. Her image came to life under his knife.
On the other side of the table were many already-carved figures of her, in various poses but all with the same expression, indifferent.
This was how she looked when she was angry.
He hadn’t seen her these past few days. He shut himself at home, always doing this.
Every day, he carved a Ji Yunhuan. Seeing them lined up before him gave him a sense of accomplishment.
Only by doing this could he restrain himself from seeking her out.
Last time she was so angry, he was afraid to go, fearing that he might push her too far again, and she would do something extreme.
Luckily, she did nothing after going back that day.
He did not wish to disturb her peaceful life for the time being.
Yet, he missed her, missed her so much...
The phone beside him rang for a long while. Qi Cheng didn’t notice, concentrating on his work.
When his focus was on Ji Yunhuan, everything else could be ignored.
