Chapter 223: Chapter 223 Baby is Born (1)_1
Qi Cheng and Bai Liyan had always been good brothers. From how Bai Liyan used to care for Qi Cheng, one could tell.
Now, because of her, the two met without even exchanging greetings.
Bai Liyan obviously didn’t want to hear them discuss this matter. He stood up. "I’m going out for a bit."
"Where are you going?" Qin Feng, who came with him, pulled him back. "We finally came out once; you’re trying to escape again?"
Ji Yunhuan glanced at Bai Liyan. In just a few months, Bai Liyan had changed so much. It was hard to associate him with the once confident and composed man.
Bai Liyan was pressed back into his chair. The atmosphere became a bit awkward. Qi Cheng spoke up, "How has Liyan been lately?"
Although he was initially angry about the matter with Chencheng, he wasn’t an unreasonable person. He knew how much effort Bai Liyan had put into Chencheng’s matter. He also understood how serious it was for Bai Liyan, who had always been interested only in medicine, to announce his withdrawal.
This proved his inner turmoil and guilt.
"I’m fine," Bai Liyan said indifferently.
The two people who came with Bai Liyan and Qi Cheng were named Qin Feng and Dongzi. They were roughly the same age and had always had a good relationship. When Ji Yunhuan and Qi Cheng just got their marriage certificate, Bai Liyan invited these two for the celebration.
Qi Cheng always valued his friends and treated them well.
Since they all knew each other, there weren’t many considerations in speaking. Dongzi, seeing Ji Yunhuan not speaking, said, "Sister-in-law, are you still angry with Liyan about what happened before?"
Ji Yunhuan looked at Bai Liyan and found that he wasn’t looking at her. Sitting at the same table with her was a torment for Bai Liyan. He didn’t want to face her; he felt uncomfortable, oppressed.
Facing Dongzi’s question, Ji Yunhuan remained silent.
After so long, her hatred for Bai Liyan was not as heavy as before. However, how could she say it? She still couldn’t disregard it completely, couldn’t totally forgive Bai Liyan.
After all, to her, forgiveness meant trivializing Chencheng’s death.
Seeing her not answering, Dongzi continued, "To err is human! For that matter, Liyan has already given up everything. Why are you still holding a grudge? No one could blame him entirely for what happened. As a doctor, he did his best!"
"That’s enough, Dongzi." Bai Liyan interrupted him. "Don’t talk about this."
He didn’t want to talk about this topic either.
Dongzi glanced at Bai Liyan, knowing it was a sore spot for him. As a friend, he always felt that only if Ji Yunhuan forgave Bai Liyan could Bai Liyan forgive himself.
Only then could Bai Liyan return to his rightful place.
In the past few months, many people called him about his withdrawal. Many still invited him for consultations, but he declined them all.
He had truly withdrawn.
Because of one failure, he completely abandoned his talent.
As friends, it was hard not to feel that Ji Yunhuan was responsible. It was also hard not to pity Bai Liyan.
"Yunhuan, you’re already here!" During the stalemate, the second sister-in-law’s voice sounded from behind. She came over with the eldest sister-in-law. Seeing Ji Yunhuan, they came to sit at the table.
Seeing Bai Liyan, the eldest and second sister-in-law both greeted him, "Liyan, you’re here too. Long time no see."
While Ji Yunhuan was deeply pained by Chencheng’s death, many were regretting Bai Liyan’s withdrawal.
They wouldn’t undermine Bai Liyan because of one mistake. He was a good man, still excellent, something undeniable.
Later, as they talked, Ji Yunhuan just sat quietly. She listened but didn’t really hear. It felt like a world not belonging to her.
The wedding began soon. She didn’t even notice how it ended.
After the wedding was the banquet.
The second sister-in-law reminded Ji Yunhuan, "It’s time for your prenatal checkup in a few days, don’t forget."
"I know." Regarding the baby, the second sister-in-law remembered more clearly than Ji Yunhuan. As a mother, Ji Yunhuan felt very ashamed.
After dinner, everyone chatted for a while. Ji Yunhuan and Qi Cheng were about to leave. They had just reached the door when Dongzi chased after them, "Qi Cheng."
Qi Cheng stopped and looked at him. "What’s up?"
"I need to talk to you. It’s about Liyan. It’ll just take a moment." Dongzi didn’t forget to seek Ji Yunhuan’s opinion, "Sister-in-law, is it okay?"
"Go ahead!" Ji Yunhuan said to Qi Cheng, "I’ll just wander around."
"Then wait here for me."
Ji Yunhuan stood where she was, watching them leave, a helpless smile on her face.
She couldn’t let go of her grudge against Bai Liyan, but she wasn’t so despotic as to make Qi Cheng share her resentment.
Bai Liyan was actually a good man.
But she was a bad person.
She knew it wasn’t his fault yet still couldn’t forgive him.
Who could blame her selfishness?
Dongzi led Qi Cheng to the hall next door. Bai Liyan and Qin Feng were there. Dongzi said, "You should talk to him! Maybe your words might make him understand some things."
"Okay."
Qin Feng said something to Bai Liyan and walked over.
Qi Cheng walked toward the figure by the window. He stood next to him, looked at the somewhat disheveled Bai Liyan, and lit a cigarette.
Bai Liyan glanced at him and said calmly, "Give me one."
"You never used to smoke."
The former Bai Liyan was such a restrained and disciplined person.
Apart from having no interest in women, he was practically the perfect man.
Bai Liyan took a cigarette, put it in his mouth, bit it, but didn’t light it. "People change. One can learn anything. I’m not who I used to be!"
Qi Cheng kicked the ground, looked up at Bai Liyan, and said, "Changing for the better is an improvement. Changing for the worse is a downfall. This is a downfall! Recently, Aunt Bai called me, asking me to talk to you. They all hope you won’t go on like this."
Bai Liyan looked outside. "I know."
"So what do you plan to do? Are you really not planning to go back to your old career?"
"No, I won’t go back. I’ll just become a businessman like you. Being a businessman is the easiest thing. I see how relaxed you are." Bai Liyan knew he had been falling too long. He needed to pull himself together, but definitely not by returning to being a doctor.
