Chapter 79: Chapter Sixty-Eight

LEO

My head is spinning and my soul is about to leave my body as I motionlessly walk out of the horror house. God knows what got into me to make me agree to go into that hell hole. I must have been out of my mind to let Erwin lead me in there. I feel like throwing up. My face is changing color like a damn rainbow.

Erwin notices my discomfort and asks worriedly, "Are you okay, Leo? Should we just go home?"

"I am fine." I huff, my voice low, "You knew I don’t do well with spooky stuff." I grumble.

"I am sorry, Leo. I didn’t think you would be this spooked out. I really didn’t mean it." Erwin apologizes as he leads me to the side of the empty road and lets me sit on a bench.

John and Ruth are not here they went off somewhere on their own, leaving us alone to have some privacy. But I think it’s actually the opposite. They needed the said privacy and so they left us. And I don’t actually mind it. I could spend forever with Erwin alone and still wouldn’t get tired of it.

"You don’t have to apologize I just get too scared and stiff when I see those kinds of stuff." I wave, my head hanging between my shoulders, and face to the ground directly between my knees, to drive the nauseating feeling away.

"I am really sorry." Erwin apologizes nonetheless. "Here," He offers me a bottle of water to chug down my throat.

I take it and drink it in one go. It’s really embarrassing to be this miserable. John, Erwin and even Ruth barely flinched throughout our journey through the house while I was changing colors like a rainbow. Sometimes green, sometimes blue, and many other colors that I would rather not mention. I even turned red from embarrassment when just a doll suddenly appeared before me and scared the hell out of me.

The night is getting deeper so it is expected that no one is wandering around the street. It’s eerily still -the night. I silver slightly as the November air brushes my skin bitterly, digging its cold fangs into my minimum exposed skin to the element. I shiver slightly at the cold breeze’s unforgiving touch.

It doesn’t go unnoticed in Erwin’s eyes. "Are you cold, Leo?" He asks softly, his tone concerned.

"A little," I answer honestly as I rub my palms together.

"Here." Erwin takes off his jacket and drapes it over my shoulders. He tugs onto the hem of his jacket as he secures it around me, his one knee touching the ground as he crouches down on the ground and looks up at me, a light smile playing hide and seek on the corner of his lips. "It will keep you warm. Do you want to drink or have anything?"

I shake my head slowly, "I am alright."

This jacket smells like Erwin. Like fresh coffee beans.

My cheeks are red from who knows which effect. It can be for the biting cold or the faint pheromone radiating from Erwin’s jacket.

"Wuah!" a sudden cry jolts both me and Erwin out of our ’our’- place. Our heads snap toward the direction where the desperate cry is coming from. A boy is standing less than a few feet away from us. He is bawling his eyes off. His face is puffed from all the crying. His lips are red and swollen. He is barely over seven. And he must have been crying for a while now.

I and Erwin exchange a look before I get on my feet and slowly walk over to the boy standing in the middle of the deserted street. "Hey." I approach him, my voice low and soothing. "Why are you crying?" I bend to match his height and Erwin stands behind me. Wearing a kind expression on his face, not wanting to scare the kid more than he already is.

The boy doesn’t answer my question and ignores me completely. He is crying at his own pace and it’s almost amusing. "Hey, why are you crying? I won’t know if you don’t tell me." I coo further, "Tell me. Why are you crying? Do you need help?" I ask, soothing and soft.

The boy finally nods, "I need help." He hiccups, rubbing his red and swollen eyes. They look so sympathetic that my heart clenches. His eyes are hazel. One of the most beautiful I have ever seen.

"Are you lost?" Erwin asks, sympathetically, "What’s your name?"

"Mommy says not to say anything to a stranger." The boy hiccups and gasps as he rubs his red eyes with his tiny balled fist, sniffling.

He is wearing a tiger suit, maybe he has dressed up as a tiger today but the way he is acting is betraying his bravery and making him a scared stiff cat. "Your mom taught you well kiddo. But we can’t help you if you don’t tell us your name." Erwin pets his head with an assuring grin.

"Yes, my boy." I reassure him warmly, "If you don’t tell us your name then I am afraid that we won’t be able to help you."

The boy fiddles with the zip of his suit and pouts, seemingly pondering over whether he should betray his mother’s teaching and give away his name or be stubborn and be stuck here forever. Well, the latter is not going to happen anyway.

"M-My name is Johan." His small voice is a bit raspy. Maybe because of all the crying and bawling.

"Why are you here alone?" I ask softly as I take his hand and lead him to the bench we were sitting on earlier. I help him to sit there. "Where are your parents? Did you come here alone?"

Johan shakes his head in the negative, "I came here with Papa. But I can’t find him. He got lost. I need to find him or he will be scared and start crying." He sniffs.

Erwin snorts but holds back his laughter. "Who are you talking about kiddo? You or your father? Did you get lost or your father? I think you are the one who got lost."

Johan looks like he is about to start crying again at Erwin’s remark and mockery, "I-I" His tiny voice trembles as he sniffs back a cry, "I didn’t get lost... papa got lost...I can’t find him..."

"Awe." I know I am not supposed to be in awe when someone is crying but this kid is really gorgeous, so I can’t help it. "Erwin, stop teasing him." I rebuke as my eyes dart to Erwin’s.

"I am sorry. But I couldn’t help." He grunts as he shrugs his shoulders.

I turn my focus back to the Johan. I squeeze his hand warmly and soothingly, "Yes, yes, you are not the one who got lost but your father did. You should give him a good scolding when you find him okay?"

"Yes, yes." Johan haphazardly wipes at his tears with his small hands and nods frantically, "I will give him a good scolding and tell Mommy about it."

"Oh, I feel bad for his dad." Erwin purses his lips, but his tone carries no sympathy, "That guy is gonna get an earful from his wife."

"And you are gonna get an earful from me." I chide, "Be serious, Erwin."

"Sorry." he apologizes again but not so apologetically.

"Then, Johan do you know where you live?" I ask him my tone softening into cotton.

Johan shakes his head, "No."

"Phone number?" Erwin questions on my behalf.

"No." He shakes his head again.

"He is being difficult now." Erwin snorts, clearly losing his patience. "He doesn’t know his phone number, his address. Is the only thing he knows his name?"

"Erwin." I chide again in a pleading way, my eyes are begging him to be patient. He takes the hint and shuts up, for now.

"I have them written on my backpack." Johan pipes in as he slips his tiny backpack down his shoulder. It is a small tiger bag. "Here." He shoves it almost to my face.

"You could’ve just said that you had them earlier then I wouldn’t had to be rebuked by Leo," Erwin grumbles like a child almost as if he has turned into one.

"It doesn’t matter, Erwin," I say as I unzip the chain of Johan’s bag and rummage through it to find a notebook or something.

"I am sorry..." The little guy starts to fiddle with his suit’s chain again, a small cute pout visible on his cute little face.

"I found it." I pull out a small diary from Johan’s bag and open it. The lamp is providing me enough light to understand the small tidy words lining up the notebook.

I pick up a number and pull out my phone. I dial the number that is written to be his dad’s. A tense voice picks up the call almost immediately. I explain the situation to Johan’s father and give him our location. He arrives within five minutes and takes Johan with him. Johan looks back as he walks away with his father and waves at me with a wide smile on his face.

My heart clenches and I wave back at him.

I wish I had a gorgeous son like him...

"Leo?" Erwin calls me out of my fantasy.

"Y-Yes?" I ask.

"Do you want to try for a child again?" Erwin asks, his face is contoured with seriousness. He knows what he is talking about.

I take in a deep breath and nod lightly with a small smile. Erwin pauses for a brief second and nods too before smiling back. "Let’s go home."
