Chapter 61: Chapter Fifty-One
LEO
He is late. Erwin is late and I can’t reach him through the phone. He isn’t picking up my calls nor is replying to my texts.
Did something happen to him?
No, no Leo. Don’t think of negatives. Maybe something important came up and he needed to handle it right away? Maybe his phone is dead, this is why he can’t reply to my calls and texts?
But his phone is never dead and he picks up almost immediately when I call him. Why is he being like this?
"Leo, if we don’t set out now we will be late." Kevin states as he checks the time through his wrist watch. "Why is Erwin not here yet? Did something come up on his end?"
"I don’t know." I shake my head, staring at my phone’s screen so hard as if my answers will pop out on here. "Can’t we wait just a little bit longer?"
"President Liu’s assistant has already called me three times now. I don’t think it would be too graceful to be late more than we already are." Kevin snips robotically.
"Then can we just cancel it?" I suggest.
Kevin gives me a look. I know I am being childish here and my assistant is behaving more mature than me but I can’t help it. I don’t want to go to that party if Erwin is not coming. That Liu Feng guy has a thing for me and it is so damn obvious that I feel rather awkward to avoid it.
"I am sorry, president but I am afraid it is not an option anymore." Kevin averts his that pointed gaze from me, "We need to go to the party to maintain our reputation and it is a must if you want the billion dollar project successful."
"But I don’t have a partner." I denote, "Will it not hamper our reputation?"
"Well, in that case chairman Leon is at the company. We can also ask him to accompany you to the party." Kevin advises.
"As if." I scrunch my nose, "how can you even consider it as a probability? Do you think I will by any means agree to go to a party with that...""prick?" I didn’t finish my sentence. No matter how much I loathe my oldest brother it doesn’t mean I will insult him in front of my assistant.
"Then what do you want?" Kevin sighs, clearly fed up with my insane reasoning.
"I will go alone." I state as I get on my heels and wind down toward the exit of my office, followed by Kevin.
"Do you think this is a wise decision?" Kevin asks, still unsure of how to handle the situation, "I mean you just said it yourself that it will hamper our reputation if you go there alone."
"It doesn’t matter." I dismissively wave off the matter, "I am not grabbing random guys and hauling them in my car to go to a party with me as my partner. I am not that easy to get."
And Kevin gives me a look-who-is-talking look and he is not wrong. This is how I married Erwin anyway. I just grabbed him and pulled inside my car and told him to marry me. To think of now it was quite the situation. But I don’t regret it and I am never gonna regret it. Because it was the best decision I have ever taken in my fucked up life.
"Fine." He shrugs and zips up his mouth, not speaking another word after that.
I keep checking my phone through the whole ride, hoping for Erwin to shoot me at least a small text saying: sorry, I can’t come. But the text never came and my guts keep telling me that something is wrong. Really wrong.
I get down from the car and enter the hotel lobby where the party is hosted. All the high ranking people of the society are gathered here. All are taking and socializing.
Fake. All of it. All of them.
They are just putting on a smiling face just to get a chance and stab the other party right from the behind when they turn around. Well, can’t blame them for this because I am almost the same. Almost. Because most of the people here are hunted and I am the one who hunts them. They are my prey and I am their predator. I have an aura around me that tells them ’you shall fear me’.
This is what I have learned from eight years of bloody experience by being involved directly in the industry. This is the way the world works. The industry works. This is the way I work with them.
"Hello Mr. Leo!" Liu Feng approaches me the moment I enter the hall, his hand splayed out in a welcoming gesture, "How pleasant to have a great person like you attending my party." I internally roll my eyes in three hundred and sixty degree angles but externally I put on a mild smile.
Socializing, socializing.
"Good evening Mr. Liu, I am the one who should be honored to be able to participate in your party." I greet. But honestly I couldn’t care less about this ass wiping party. What does he take me for? An idiot?
"Oh you flatter me." He laughs, trying to humor me.
"No, no it’s the truth." I return the courtesy.
Kevin rubs his nose, clearly infatuated by my subtle returns. ’I couldn’t care less’ is written all over my face and Liu Feng must be a blind not to be able to notice it.
Then Liu Feng looks over my shoulder as if searching for something and my stomach flips, "Umm may I ask if Mr. Warner couldn’t make it?"
"O-Oh, he just got caught up in something important." I lie through my teeth. Well it can’t be counted as a lie since I am still not sure or aware of the truth myself.
"Oh." The corner of Liu Feng’s lip twitches and ’more important than you?’ looks to replace his modest expression for a brief second but he manages to get himself slipped away, "This is really unfortunate."
Okay now, I really want to punch his face, "It is." Though I am not idiot enough to actually do that.
"Oh please, please join the party." Liu Feng beckons me inside and I follow him, "If you don’t mind Mr. Snow, what do your husband Mr. Warner do again?"
I almost lift my fist to punch him this time but Kevin taps at my clenched fist, reminding me I am supposed to be the number one business man in the continent, I can’t be a punk. So I take a deep breath and manage the most strained smile I can ever give, "He just graduated from college."
"Such a young man..." Liu Feng sighs as if he is pitying me. "What made you marry such a young man Mr. Snow? I expected to be a wiser man than this."
I give Kevin a this-man-is-getting-on-my-nerves-now look. And Kevin quickly cuts in and shakes his head.
"Brother!" A feminine voice approaches us from the suffocating crowd, "What a pleasant meeting!" The girl gives Liu Feng a huge ass smile. It’s making my skin crawl.
But my eyes widen when a dusty memory hits my neuron. This girl is the girl from the ball three months ago. Her name is Lucy I remember correctly. What the fuck is this hoe doing here?
"Lucy, my sister!" Liu Feng returns the gesture, "It’s nice to see you after all this time!"
Wait. Wait a damn minute. God, now don’t tell me this bitch is this son of a bitch’s sister. No, wait, it makes sense. They have the same quality. Bitching around behind people’s backs and trying to hook up with taken people. I shouldn’t be surprised at all.
"Hey let me introduce you to my new client." Liu Feng spins around to face me. "This_"
"Leo Snow!" Lucy cuts in enthusiastically, "What a pleasant surprise! Where is Erwin?" She looks here and there for the trace of my alpha.
Pleasant indeed. I internally make a face.
"Wait, wait am I missing something?" Liu Feng chimes in, "Do you guys by chance know each other?"
I open my month to completely deny it over their face and make a fool out of them but that bitch just has to beat me to it. A bitch indeed. "Of course we know each other. Erwin-I mean his husband is my ex."
And this is how you introduce a person.
"O-Oh a...umm very unexpected coincidence indeed." Liu Feng contemplates how he should reply to his little sister’s remark for a good twenty seconds.
"What about you?" I try to turn the conversation the other way round, "May I know you guys’ relationship?"
"I am his cousin." Lucy pipes up. "So where is your greedy alpha? Didn’t come to the party I presume? Did you guys have a fight or something?"
This girl...
I clench my fist and side wisely look at Kevin, asking him with my eyes, "Can I kill her?"
He shakes his head. I force another strained smile and turn to counter her question when suddenly my phone buzzes in my pocket. My hand snaps toward the fabric and fishes out my phone, but my expectations die down when I see the caller ID.
"Excuse me." I say the pick up the call, "Ruth,"
"Listen Leo don’t panic." Ruth sounds really tense.
"What is it?" My instincts are on high alert.
"Erwin got into an accident."
