Chapter 47: Chapter Forty-One
LEO
A soft clicking sound breaks my deep slumber. I blink a few times to focus on my surroundings and squint as the direct sunlight hits my sensitive eyes. I wake up in a heart warming embrace and in the scent of Erwin. His hand is tightly enveloping me in a protective hug and his chest slowly rising and falling as he breathes in a slow pace.
I raise my head from his chest to see where the camera clicking sound is coming from. Scrutinizing, I catch John’s one is clamped over his mouth, preventing from laughing as his upper face burns brightly because of it and on his other hand is his phone, his fingers tapping away at the screen. Meanwhile Ruth is standing in a corner silently, his face changing colors like a rainbow, not-so happy about the whole situation. There is a nurse in the cabin other than these two, who is doing her job with a pleasant smile on her flat face, occasionally shooting us an envious glance.
My head droops, a headache already blooming between my brows. "What are you guys doing here this early in the morning?"
"It’s 11 in the morning your majesty." Ruth snips sarcastically. Then changes his expression and tone, "How are you doing now? Did you wake up in the middle of the night once?"
Here we go with his health bullshit again. I roll my eyes mentally.
Well, but he has a point. Another voice inside protests.
"Hmm." I nod in affirmation.
"Why didn’t you call anyone then?" Ruth raises an eyebrow.
"Stop with that, Ruth." John chides as he nudges my best friend with his elbow, "They needed a bit of personal space for themselves. Why are you interrogating Leo like this?"
Thank you, John! I will treat you to dinner for this!
"What’s with all this commotion guys?" Erwin grumbles sleepily, diving into my chest to block the sunlight falling over his closed eyes and ruin his peaceful sleep.
And I know how but John instantly appears beside the bed and smacks Erwin’s head comically, "Get up asshole. This is not your bedroom. And he is sick!" He admonishes.
"Ekk!" Erwin jolts. "The fuck are you doing, John?" He groans.
"Get up! Now!" John rebukes , paying no attention to the latter’s complaint.
They are hopeless.
"Hmph!" Erwin pouts and turns his attention to me, "Are you okay? How are you feeling now?" He asks as he cups my face and strokes it gently. His face inches away from mine, his warm breath fanning against my bruised face.
"I am fine." I answer softly as I subconsciously learn to his warm touch.
He nods in acknowledgement, his gentle smile and loving gaze making my lips tug into a soft smile.
Someone clears her throat and pulls us out of it, "Umm, Mr. Warner if you don’t mind, I would like to examine Mr. Snow."
"O-Oh." Erwin instantly rolls out of the bed and I clamp an embarrassed palm over my cherry-red face.
"What?" Erwin jets at the other two in the room, who are wearing the ’ikk’ look on their face.
"Nothing." The both sniffs together as they shrug their shoulders.
After a few minutes the nurse leaves the room to give the doctor in charge my report.
"So, you don’t have to go to work." I direct the question to Ruth.
"Oh my!" He jumps on his feet, "I completely forgot about that!" Then in the moment of impulse he leans and plants a goodbye kiss on John’s cheek before rushing off.
John’s eyes widen, so do Erwin’s. I slap my forehead at my best friend’s stupidity. How can a person be this brainless when they are genius?
Erwin’s eyebrow raises as he gives John a demanding look, clearly not at all happy about the incident transpired just now. John breaks into cold sweat at the demanding death glare of his best friend.
"H-Hey!" He stutters, his words uneven, "I have got something important to do! I-I will catch up to you later!" He bolts with tail between his legs.
Poor John...
Erwin stands there staring at the spot John was just standing as if the spot will spread to make a tunnel for him so that he can go after his best friend. A few beats pass away and Erwin shrugs it off, for now. For now. Probably deciding to handle the matter later and I have a gut feeling that the later would not turn out too great for either of those two. Erwin grabs a stool and slides it to the side of my bed and sits there.
"Erwin, do you have your phone?" I ask, "Can you give it to me?"
"Hmm." He nods, "Here." He fishes out his phone from the pocket of his jacket and hands it to me.
"Unlock it for me." I try to return his phone so he can unlock it.
"Type." He refuses to take it, "002908."
"Okay." I unlock it and directly go to the call logs. And believe me there are only three numbers here. Mine, John’s and Ruth’s. I can’t decide whether I should laugh or cry at the deserted state of his contact history.
I dial Kevin’s number and hold the phone to my ear. It takes two rings for him to pick up the call.
"Who is this?" He inquiries, his voice wary.
"It’s me." I say calmly.
"Leo!" Kevin bursts out and I jerk the phone inches away from my ear, rolling my lips in disdain. "What’s happening all this?! Where are you?! And why is Mr. Jean Snow trying to talk with you?"
"Well..." Then I give Kevin a full encounter of what happened to me. But I fail to notice the veins bulging in Erwin’s forehead and throat, eyes blood red and coated with fury.
"Oh God..." Kevin gasps but there is amiss there. He doesn’t sound that surprised or sympathetic but as my mind is not currently functioning very well I miss it. "All this happened in one night?! How much bad luck are you capable of bringing upon yourself? Now what should we do?"
"Leak all the things I said just now among the press." I instruct blankly.
"W-What?!" He exclaims over the phone, making me repeat my previous action, "B-But it will pollute our company’s reputation very severely. Are you sure about that?"
"Don’t make me repeat my words again, Kevin." I say dryly, "You know that I don’t bluff."
"I am sorry..." He apologizes meekly.
"Oh by the way what were you saying about Jean?" I frown as his previously said words draw to me, "Is he plotting something?"
"Well," There is a faint rustle sound coming from the other end, "they just sent me a notice that they are holding another board meeting next week. I think they will probably try to drag you down from the chairman post’s rightful heir and will make Mr. Leon the new chairman since you have miscarried your child. And probably... Mr. Jean will try to negotiate with him about the thing that happened with his son."
"How do you know all this?" My frown deepens.
"Assumption." Kevin shrugs.
And he is right. From the sudden board notice it is clear that my family no longer wants to wait for the right time and right place. James has created an opening for them no matter how dangerous and futile it was, he did it anyway. And now Jean will hit the iron while it is hot, even if it means sacrificing his only son. How can a person be this selfish and greedy?
The faint ache in my temple starts to bloom anew and very rapidly this time. I rub the place between my brows. A futile attempt to dispel my headache.
But it’s okay. I still have one week in my hands. I can manage somehow. I know, I can. So, I take a deep breath to calm the storm inside my head and heart.
"And while we are at it," I change the topic to a much lighter subject, "can you get me another phone? Mine got busted by James last night."
"O-Oh," James staggers, "of course. But I was wondering whose phone you are currently using to talk to me?"
"It’s Erwin’s." I cast a small glance to my side where Erwin is sitting on a stool like an obedient child.
"Oh." Kevin’s voice dims.
"Okay then." I dismiss the conversation, "I will be discharged from the hospital maybe tomorrow, so dope the phone at my home to my butler."
"’Kay. Get well soon." Kevin cuts the call.
"Here." I hand back the phone to its rightful owner. "Thank you."
"What for?" He blinks as he pockets his phone.
"For lending me your phone." I drawl.
"Don’t say thank you to me." Erwin leans forward, "Instead to show gratitude, you can do this." He smooches on my swollen lips.
Sparks ignite my eyes as his skilled lips move against mine. My lips too start to move instinctively against his as my eyes close on their own.
After a few moments he breaks the kiss, "Hey, are you hungry?" He gasps for air. His lips are brushing against mine as our face is too close and that is not at all healthy for my heart.
"Pretty much." I reply in the same manner. "But I have a very important question to ask you." I straighten up and lean against the headboard. "How did you find me?"
"Hmm, a good question." He straightens up on his seat too, "It was actually very easy. I didn’t really need to work my brain at all. It was evident that the work was done by an immature person. Nor, they wouldn’t commit a kidnapping in a parking lot full of cameras. And then again it was clear that they were in a hurry, it means the plan wasn’t at all planned. They just found a chance when you were alone and shoved you into the van, so they didn’t really plan it out that carefully and brought you where they brought nobody would find them. Simple."
"Wow." I purse my lips, "You could cut a very good detective." I compliment.
"I get that a lot." He scoffs.
"You do?" I ask, my voice dropping as my eyes narrow in challenging slits.
"I do." His response is almost the same as mine.
"Then now go bring me food." I penetrate into the sensual tension between us, remembering that there is a huge ugly blackish bruise consuming the whole left side of my face and some part of my body.
"Okay." He chuckles and walks out of the cabin. "I will be there in a minute." He looks over his shoulder before sliding the door shut.
And now I think I am completely ready for the showdown with my family because I don’t need them anymore since I already have someone far more precious than them. My treasure. My queen. My husband. My better half. Erwin.
