Chapter 419: Old Scandals of the Wealthy

Selina’s eyes widened. "How is that cheating? The contract was up for renewal today anyway. As the partner, don’t I get to choose who I want to work with?"

Logan let out a low chuckle. "Didn’t expect Mrs. Reid’s victory to come in such an... unexpected way."

Selina squinted at him. She had the feeling there was more to that remark.

Sure enough, the man drawled lazily, "For example, I didn’t realize XR Luxury was under your name."

Selina: "..."

Logan leaned back on the sofa with elegant ease, long legs crossed. "There’s always been rumors that XR’s owner is a total mystery. Supposedly only Brooks, the president, has ever seen her in person."

Selina opened her mouth to explain, but before she could speak, voices erupted from outside the room.

"Hey, did you hear? XR’s boss is so well connected in City N. Besides the Morris Family, who even dares cross them?"

"Ha, Morris Family must be crazy, thinking they can just clear out the whole shop here like in City H!"

"Shh—look, Moore the manager’s coming out."

Selina’s eyes narrowed at the mention of Morris Family. "What’s going on out there?"

Brooks asked a couple questions, then snorted. "Nothing serious. Old Mrs. Morris and Joe insisted on clearing the place out, got into it with Manager Moore."

He added smoothly, "Don’t worry, Miss. Moore will handle it."

Selina frowned. XR was a luxury boutique that mostly sold women’s handbags. What was Joe doing there?

Suddenly a furious old woman’s voice interrupted her thoughts:

"Do you know who I am?!"

Old Mrs. Morris’s face was beet red, shaking with rage.

Moore coolly tucked her hair behind her ear, looking at the furious woman with undisguised mockery.

"Of course I know. You’re the Morris Family matriarch. Who in City A hasn’t heard of them?"

Yeah right, she thought. Morris Family—the same people who didn’t think Selina was good enough for them. And they had the nerve to pull this here?

Old Mrs. Morris snapped, "Since you know who I am, why aren’t you inviting me in properly?!"

Moore didn’t bother pretending to be polite anymore. "Sorry, Old Mrs. Morris. XR doesn’t do ’clear the shop’ for anyone. Plenty of our clients are every bit as distinguished as you, if not more."

You think you’re the only VIP here?

Joe’s face was bright red with embarrassment. "Mom..."

"Shut up!" she barked, shaking with fury. "I’m old! Don’t you care if I get knocked around in a crowd? Can XR even afford the liability?!"

Back in City H, she could walk into any store and have it cleared out in seconds. It was her status. If she couldn’t do it here in City A, wouldn’t that make her look second-rate?

Moore made a sweeping gesture toward the exit. "If you’re worried about falling over, best go home and lie down. And don’t worry—this place is covered in cameras. Nobody’s about to fake an injury here."

Old Mrs. Morris practically fell over backwards, clutching her chest in fury.

Inside, Selina was actually a little impressed by Moore’s spine—and unexpectedly touched. She knew Moore was going in this hard precisely because the Morris Family had treated her so badly. Moore was standing up for her.

"Old Madam, let’s just drop this," came a soft, placating voice from beside them.

Old Mrs. Morris let out an impatient snort. "Fine! I’m only doing this for you. I just don’t want you getting slighted. Back in City N, who would dare treat you this way? Everyone there respects the Hill Family. XR here has no sense. If this were City N, they’d have gone out of business ages ago!"

Hill? City N?

Selina arched a brow, her gaze sharpening as she looked at the woman who had spoken.

"And who exactly is this?"

In City N, there was only one "Hill Family" she could think of—one of the so-called "Big Three" clans.

This woman... was she connected to that Hill Family?

Brooks’s expression darkened a little. "The woman with Grandma Morris? She’s the daughter of the previous head of the Hill Family."

Logan raised an eyebrow slightly. "I’ve heard about the Hill Family."

A classic case of old-money infighting—well, not even really infighting. More like flat-out scheming and betrayal.

Years back, there were two brothers. The elder—Charles Hill—was the brilliant head of the Hill Family thirty years ago. He and his wife were a powerhouse team who secured the Hill Family’s standing in City N.

But then there was a car accident. Charles was killed, and his wife ended up in a coma. They left behind a son and a daughter.

Charles’s younger brother—Matt Hill, now known as Old Mr. Hill—seized control. He kicked Charles’s children out and took over the entire Hill Family for himself.

It wasn’t exactly a secret, but it was an ugly story. Still, Old Mr. Hill held the reins for so long that no one dared challenge him, let alone fight for Charles’s children.

As for why they called him the "previous" family head now...

Because after thirty years in a vegetative state, Charles’s wife woke up. Charles’s son came roaring back, overthrew Old Mr. Hill, and is now firmly in charge of the Hill Family.

The woman with Grandma Morris was Old Mr. Hill’s daughter. She wasn’t on good terms with the new family head. But outsiders didn’t know all the twists and turns. All they saw was her Hill Family bloodline—which was enough to let her throw her weight around.

When Logan finished, Selina fell silent for a moment. "...Rich families in City N really are messy."

Logan gave a mild nod. "This Miss Hill never married, but her reputation was decent. Even when Old Mr. Hill was at the height of his power, she never openly threw her weight around—at least not on the surface."

"But after Old Mr. Hill lost power, she suddenly left City N. I didn’t expect her to get mixed up with the Morris Family."

Selina guessed, "Did the Hill Family kick her out?"

Logan gave a dry laugh. "Even if Old Mr. Hill ’lost power,’ he’s still the current family head’s uncle. He still holds sway in the Hill Family. And his daughter is the family head’s sister. Why would they kick her out?"

Selina felt a strange, unexplainable twist in her chest listening to the Hill Family story. It was unsettling.

But she didn’t dwell on it. The darkness and mess of these old families was really something most people couldn’t stomach.

"Whatever. As long as the Morris Family doesn’t bother me—"

Before she could finish, Brooks glanced at his phone and his face suddenly changed.

"Miss... there’s a problem. That Miss Hill, she’s..."

Brooks actually tripped over his words, staring blankly.

"She’s the woman Grandma Morris picked out... as Joe’s arranged marriage candidate."

Selina: "?"
