Married First, Loved Later : A Flash Marriage with My Ex's 'Uncle' -
Chapter 406: No Choosing — I Want It All
Chapter 406: No Choosing — I Want It All
Selina had zero interest in Joe’s matchmaking. She hung up the phone—only to suddenly hear Logan speak.
"Chairman Morris isn’t exactly eager to be set up," Logan said mildly. "Or rather, he strongly resents it."
Selina raised an eyebrow. "So what? He doesn’t dare disobey Grandma Morris."
The matchmaking was her idea. Joe had never once gone against his mother. Even if he didn’t want to go, he still went.
Selina frowned in disgust. "Joe puts on this act, like he’s so devoted—that whole ’eternal love for my mother’ persona. The man’s been unmarried for decades. But I seriously question if he ever really loved her."
"If he loved her, why didn’t he marry her? If he loved her, why did he let Grandma Morris insult and humiliate her?"
"If he didn’t love her, why not just move on and remarry? If he didn’t love her, why still keep her things—her photos, her belongings?"
Logan said slowly, "Love? Oh, it was there."
Selina clearly didn’t buy it.
"For some people, love is cheap. They hand it out whenever they feel like it."
Logan chuckled—low and dark, like he’d just remembered something.
"He didn’t lack love. He lacked strength. Your mother was brilliant—so extraordinary, she haunted people’s memories for decades. But he was weak. He had to choose between her and the family. And so, he gave her up."
"But Chairman Morris was never truly at peace with it. Deep down, he wanted both—Morris Family and your mother. He fantasized about her giving up everything, staying beside him, playing the obedient flower on the vine."
Logan said calmly, "Being forced to choose is always the worst."
Selina found herself agreeing. Joe never wanted to give up anything, but he wanted everything in return.
That kind of love? More disgusting than no love at all.
Just as she turned to leave, Damien’s voice rang out.
"Mr. Reid, wait."
Logan wasn’t surprised. "Something on your mind, Mr. Brown?"
Damien looked him straight in the eyes and got to the point. "I heard what you said earlier. It was enlightening. So I have a question—if you had to choose between two things... which would you pick?"
Logan’s gaze darkened instantly. "I wouldn’t have to choose."
Then he added, cool as ever, "I’d take both."
Damien let out a cold laugh. "Bold of you to say. In that case, listen up."
His presence suddenly turned heavy.
"Amelia’s gone public. Either you divorce or give up Anna’s inheritance. Your move, Logan. I’ll be waiting."
Logan raised an eyebrow. "I’ll make sure Mr. Brown gets a satisfying answer."
He wasn’t Joe. He wasn’t some spineless coward pushing fifty, still afraid to defy his mother. Amelia wanted to force a choice?
He wasn’t playing that game.
He was going to take both. Why the hell shouldn’t he?
...
After Owen got out of the police station, his reputation tanked. The Reid and Perry families had to join forces just to shut down the public outcry.
To secure Owen’s status as the "rightful heir," both families set their sights on Anna’s inheritance.
On top of that, the Perry family planned to throw a grand banquet to officially announce Owen as Anna’s biological son—and their legitimate heir.
...
Meanwhile, Selina hadn’t paid any attention to Joe these past few days. Life had been peaceful.
She’d signed on with Reid Group, with full control over the design department. After finishing a meeting, she was just about to head back to her office when the noise outside suddenly went quiet.
"This is the design department? Not bad, not bad. Looks like big bro still takes the company seriously. But I heard the director here is my dear sister-in-law. Huh... doesn’t that seem a little off to you?"
A smug male voice echoed from the hallway.
Everyone immediately recognized it—and exchanged uneasy glances.
Outside the door, someone eagerly chimed in: "Young Master Owen is right! Young Master Logan is great and all, but he clearly doesn’t understand boundaries. Giving such an important department to his wife? That’s blatant favoritism!"
"Exactly! What if people start asking questions—how are we, the Reid Family, supposed to maintain credibility?"
Selina arched an eyebrow. That was Owen’s voice.
And the others? Probably people Reid Group sent to back him up.
Owen’s eyes were cold and calculating. Today, with Logan away, he was going to put Selina in her place.
Strip her of her position as Head of Design? She wouldn’t dare resist.
Owen sighed dramatically, playing it cool. "That’s right. The head position should go to someone qualified. Big brother made a mistake—he should fix it. Since I’ll be part of Reid Group from now on, how about this? I’ll make the call. Selina is hereby—"
"Qualified?" Selina pushed open the conference room door and stepped right in front of him. "Sounds like you’ve got a serious problem with me, little brother."
Owen clenched his jaw so tight he nearly cracked a tooth.
This woman—she poisoned his mother, framed him—he wanted nothing more than to rip her apart.
Today, she was going down. No matter what.
Barely keeping his rage in check, Owen sneered, "Sister-in-law, it’s not personal. I’m doing what’s best for the company. You don’t understand—plenty of people don’t respect you. They think you only got this job through connections."
"I’m just suggesting you resign voluntarily. Spare yourself the embarrassment—"
"Plenty of people?" Selina blinked, genuinely puzzled. "Really? I’m curious. Who exactly thinks that?"
The entire design team: "..."
Who? Who in their right mind would think that?
Selina was Star—the global design icon. Every firm on the planet would kill to have her. Reid Group landing her was their honor. Anyone calling Star a nepotism hire was either insane or suicidal.
But Owen? This empty suit of a second son knew nothing. Nothing about corporate management, and even less about the design world. He didn’t know who Star was. Didn’t know Selina was Star. All he wanted was to make an example of her.
Without thinking it through, he waved a hand dismissively:
"Come on, sis. Don’t ask that. These people still have to work here. If you knew who said it, how would they survive? I’m not naming names. Just know a lot of people aren’t happy with you."
Owen genuinely thought Logan had only given Selina a title to make her feel important. As if she could actually be qualified? Please.
He waited for Selina’s reaction, smirking.
She paused for a second. "You’re not wrong. ’The competent should lead,’ right? But I’m curious—who’s more competent than me for this role?"
Owen couldn’t help but laugh.
Was she serious? Sure, she was Mrs. Reid, but did she think she was the best designer in the world?
He’d come prepared. Grinning, he gestured behind him.
"This is Designer Perry. He’s twenty years older than you, has way more experience, award-winning work, and multiple magazine features. He’s clearly the better fit to lead the design department."
Selina blinked and glanced behind Owen at the man.
Then she let out a slow, meaningful "Ohhh."
"Perry... as in, Mrs. Perry’s maiden family?"
She looked at Owen, eyebrows raised.
"So let me get this straight—you’re saying I’m a nepotism case because I’m Logan’s wife. But this guy’s your uncle from your mom’s side... and that’s not nepotism?"
The room went completely silent.
Owen’s face stiffened. He bristled, then exploded in frustration.
"Selina! People with real skills aren’t nepotism cases! You’re the one who knows nothing and still clings to this department like you deserve it!"
