Chapter 20: Evelyn: The Awkward Placement of the Luna Mark

Evelyn~

He looked straight into my eyes. "The only way I can keep you safe ... is if you stay with me."

Theron didn’t say anything for a while. He just stood there, watching me, waiting for my answer.

"I can’t die, Your Majesty," I said at last. "Whether it’s humans or other supernatural creatures, none of them can actually kill me."

Honestly, sometimes I wished they could. It would be easier if an assassin came for me and succeeded. Because really, who would want to live such a miserable life for so long?

Other werewolves lived in packs or maybe within the kingdom, but my pack had vanished. They had been wiped out because I brought misfortune to every place I set foot in.

So unlike others who wished for a long life, I always believed that death was the only way to end the constant misfortune that clung to me.

"You can’t die, I know." Theron lowered his voice, sounding like he was trying to understand me. "But didn’t you say you hate pain? They might not be able to kill you, but there’s no guarantee they won’t torture you."

"My Lady, I can see the world hasn’t been kind to you." He stepped closer and gently took my hands in his. "But I promise, I won’t be another person who hurts you."

I stared at him for a long time. I could’ve believed his words before ... but after acknowledging the presence of his wolf, I started to doubt it.

After all, I couldn’t predict when his wolf would come back.

Still, since Theron seemed determined to do his best to stop that damn wolf from ruining my life, maybe ... I should give him a chance.

"What do the Elders want from me?" I asked. "If I stay here, won’t they try to run tests on me or something?"

Being a Luna to an Alpha King wasn’t the same as being a Luna to an Alpha of a pack.

Packs were easier to manage since most of them were small. Even the largest ones rarely had more than a thousand werewolves in them.

On the other hand, a kingdom—like the Valedorn Kingdom, for example—had over 30,000 werewolves under Theron’s rule.

As far as I knew, in every werewolf kingdom, there were always several Alphas serving under the command of the Alpha King.

If one of them hoped to rise higher ... my existence would ruin that dream.

Some of them wouldn’t be happy knowing the King finally had a Luna. With me by his side, their chances of reaching the throne would disappear.

"There will be a lot of questions from others," Theron admitted. "Many of them might not believe that you’re truly an awakened Luna."

"They should be able to sense it, though," I said. "Lunas have a different aura, a different scent. They’ll know."

"They’ll doubt it," he replied. "It’s been too long since the last Luna was alive. People forget what real power feels like when they haven’t seen it in generations."

"I can show them the Luna mark," I said. "If I can just ... find it. Maybe help me find it."

My wolf told me that since my Luna awakening, a crescent moon symbol had appeared somewhere on my body, but I couldn’t find it.

Usually, it would be at the back of my neck, but when I checked in the mirror, it wasn’t there.

So maybe the mark appeared somewhere else.

"It’s right here," Theron said quietly, sliding his hand gently down my back. He stopped just above my hips, just before the curve of my lower back. "Your Luna mark is here."

I widened my eyes. "What?!"

I rushed to the mirror, frantically pulling at my clothes, but there was no full-length mirror in the room, so I couldn’t see my lower back no matter how hard I tried.

It finally made sense why I had never been able to find my Luna’s mark on my body. Theron must have been able to find it after he saw every part of my body last night.

But right now, something else felt more urgent than that.

"Am I supposed to show this mark ... to other people?" I asked, biting the inside of my lip, feeling completely embarrassed and kind of humiliated just thinking about it.

Sure, I had shown a little cleavage here and there to flirt with men, but I had never stood fully exposed in front of a crowd before. Well, aside from being burned at the stake, but that didn’t count. Still, this felt different. It felt way too personal.

"No, it’s not necessary," Theron said in his deep, grounding voice. "You don’t need to show it to anyone."

I could tell he was tense and a bit angry, maybe?

His jaw tightened like he was imagining something he really didn’t like. Maybe the thought of me undressing in front of other men was driving him crazy.

"He’s trying to protect you, you dummy," my wolf chimed in. "Do you really think men won’t get hard after seeing your ass?"

I sighed internally. Honestly, what doesn’t make men horny? They’d probably try to sleep with a goat as long as it had a hole.

"Then how am I supposed to prove I’m really a Luna?" I asked, crossing my arms. "They’re not going to believe me just because I say so, right?"

"We’ll prove it through a Full-Moon Ceremony," Theron said. "Have you heard of it before?"

I felt like I had heard about it once, but I wasn’t exactly sure what it was, so I shook my head in response.

Theron explained, "A long time ago, before the Moon Goddess began placing the crescent moon symbol on Lunas’ bodies, their awakening could only be confirmed through a sacred ritual during the full moon. That’s why it’s called the Full-Moon Ceremony."

"It’s not just a tradition, but it’s a spiritual event. When a true Luna bathes in the sacred pool beneath the full moon, her power connects with the moonlight. If she’s real, the moon will respond."

"Respond ... how?" I asked, a little nervous now.

"Every Luna has a different reaction," Theron said. "Some say the moon glows brighter. Others say a blue flame shines from the Luna’s body."

Wasn’t that basically the same as being set on fire?

Great. I had barely escaped being burned alive on a wooden stake, and now I was supposed to burst into blue flames under the moonlight?

It sounded poetic, sure, but still, it was fire.

"Don’t worry," Theron said softly, almost as if he could feel my feelings. "The blue flame won’t hurt you. From what I’ve heard, it actually calms you and brings peace to your heart."

I gave him a skeptical look. Peace? From being set on fire?

Yeah, right.

It’s not like I could ask another Luna if it was true since I was the only one left.

I let out a soft sigh. "But ... what if it doesn’t happen?"

Sometimes, things didn’t go the way we hoped, so I needed to be prepared for that.

"It will," Theron said quickly, his voice filled with certainty.

"But if it doesn’t—"

He stepped forward, cutting me off, his voice firm and certain. "It. Will."
