Chapter 380: Internal Battle!
Chapter 380: Internal Battle!
Chapter 380
"How was it? Did he succeed?" Clarice asked in a hushed tone as she and Yami stood in the kitchen, speaking quietly while Grey and the girls remained in the living room. Finral, as usual, was outside, deep in training.
"He almost did it," Yami sighed, rubbing the back of his neck as he leaned against the counter. "But at the last moment, he suddenly went into a fit. Damn near passed out."
After Grey spasmed from attempting to cultivate his Dantian, they had returned home. Now, in the soft glow of the kitchen light, Yami and Clarice exchanged quiet words about his progress—or lack thereof.
"Honestly, I thought he’d pull through," Clarice admitted, dicing onions with rhythmic precision. "He breezed through the body refinement process faster than I expected."
She paused, her gaze drifting to the living room, where Vanessa was practically glued to Grey, fawning over him as if he were a model carved by the gods. Her eyes sparkled with admiration, and she clung to every word he muttered.
"You know..." Yami chuckled as he moved closer, his voice teasing. "I’m seriously considering marrying Vanessa off to Grey. At this rate, she’s about to drown in her own drool."
Clarice stopped cutting and slowly turned her head to glare at him.
"Right. I’ll shut up now," he muttered with a half-smile, raising his hands in mock surrender.
"It’s just a silly crush," Clarice said dismissively. "She’ll outgrow it soon enough."
"That’s what we thought too, remember?" Yami slipped behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder. "Started as a crush, became love, then marriage... and now we’ve got three noisy little monsters running around."
"If you don’t remove those hands and quit with the sweet talk," Clarice warned, lifting the knife just enough for him to see, "I’ll give your face a complete knife makeover."
"Yikes. Someone’s in her Finral mood today," Yami muttered as he let go and wandered off to fetch some spices.
Not long after, dinner was ready. Everyone gathered at the table. The air was calm—no bickering, no chaos—just light conversations floating through the room like soft background music.
That peace, however, was short-lived.
"So... I’m guessing the weakling failed, huh?" Finral said casually, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. He leaned back in his chair, watching Grey freeze mid-motion, the spoon halfway to his mouth.
"Finral..." Clarice said warningly, her tone low and sharp.
"I’m right, aren’t I?" Finral pushed further, the smirk widening. "He’s only good for two things—his disgustingly handsome face and his stupidly perfect body. Beyond that? He’s a weak, useless waste of space. Dead weight in this house."
He shoved his chair back harshly, the screech echoing in the room, and stormed out.
"Finral!" Clarice shouted, standing from her chair, but there was no response—just the thud of a door slamming shut in the distance.
"Brother Grey, please don’t feel bad..." Millie said softly, her eyes filled with concern.
But Grey only smiled, a forced expression that didn’t quite reach his eyes. He placed his spoon gently on the plate.
"I’m just... going to head to my room. I need to rest." His voice was calm, too calm. He stood and walked away, not saying a word more.
As his footsteps faded, Clarice turned to Yami.
"Why didn’t you say anything?!"
Yami shrugged, chewing on a piece of meat. "I was eating," he said plainly. "Besides, what do you expect me to say? That’s Finral. He never listens. What would words change?"
"Tsk. You’re all hopeless!" she snapped and stomped out of the dining room.
Meanwhile, in the quiet of his room, Grey sat on the edge of the bed, staring blankly at the floor. His fists clenched, and his heart twisted with a mix of confusion and fury.
’Why do I feel like this? Why does this sting so much?
Was Finral right? Am I really that weak? Just a burden? A waste of space? Even here... I’m being protected by kids. Treated like a joke.
Back in my own continent... I was probably the most walked-on trash. Nothing but a nobody with no place to belong. Maybe my life really is hopeless.’
His jaw tightened as he stood, pacing back and forth. His hands were shoved deep in his pockets until his fingers brushed against something—something unexpected.
Something... he didn’t remember putting there.
"Huh? What is this?" he muttered as he pulled out what was in his pocket, revealing a small red pill. "Right! Vanessa had given it to me that day as a thank-you for saving her, but I totally forgot about it."
He furrowed his brows, trying to recall. "What did she say it was used for again?" Grey mumbled, racking his brain again and again until her words came back to him.
{"This pill will make your cultivation easier. One of these holds a total of ten years’ worth of cultivation. If you’re lucky enough, it might even help boost your Dantian."}
"Right! That was what she said." Grey nodded, eyeing the pill in his hand repeatedly. "Let’s see if it works," he muttered and walked to the center of his room. He sat cross-legged, and with one smooth motion, swallowed the red pill.
"Huh? I feel fi—" Grey’s words halted abruptly as a sudden burning sensation erupted in his throat, snaking violently through his chest. "Wh...what is going on?" he stuttered, clutching his stomach as the burning intensified, as though flames had ignited within his belly.
"Shit!" Grey cursed as a wave of cold sweat washed over him. His body trembled with turbulent energy before he quickly shut his eyes.
’If this helped me calm down earlier on the mountain, it should help tame this fire in me too,’ he thought and swiftly entered a meditative state.
And then, he saw it—a bright yellow energy, the size of a baby’s fist, swirling erratically around his body like a trapped lightning spirit.
’H...here goes nothing,’ he thought, taking a deep breath and slowly attempting to guide the yellow energy toward his abdomen.
A sharp, searing pain erupted through his body. Sweat drenched him, his muscles tensed, his brows furrowed, his entire frame groaned in silent protest.
But the most jarring sensation of all was the sudden surge of mana roaring back to life inside him—and Grey noticed it instantly.
"Crap!" he muttered, realizing that the Ki energy was still quite a distance from his Dantian, and yet his mana had already begun moving.
"If...if I can control and move this Ki energy... then I should be able to do the same with this surging foreign energy," he reasoned through clenched teeth.
Determined, Grey split his focus in two—one half wrestling against the unruly mana in his body, pushing it away from the Ki energy, while the other guided the swirling yellow essence toward his abdomen.
The pain intensified. It became unbearable, the kind that made him want to scream his lungs out. But he resisted—biting down on his lower lip so hard that blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.
"C...c...come on!" he growled, willing the Ki energy closer and closer to his Dantian. It was just inches away when suddenly, the mana surged again—this time more violent, more determined.
The hostile mana came charging at the approaching Ki with terrifying speed. Sensing danger, a portion of the Ki broke off and surged forward to intercept the attack. The two energies collided inside him like warring titans.
"ARGHHHHHH!" Grey screamed as a fierce clash ignited within. He bit down again, stifling further cries as he watched the mana and Ki explode in a ferocious internal battle—each trying to overpower and eliminate the other.
As if the Ki had a mind of its own, noticing that the mana was trying to eliminate it, the Ki suddenly swiveled around. Its next target was Grey’s mana core, located near his heart.
"Oh shit!" Grey cursed as the Ki energy surged forward with incredible speed. In less than three seconds, it was already close to his mana core.
The mana that had been attacking Grey’s Dantian quickly swiveled as well, chasing after the Ki energy. Meanwhile, the main Ki fist drew even closer to Grey’s Dantian.
"Curses! It’s heading for my heart!" Grey muttered, clenching his hands tightly as he summoned every ounce of internal energy to stop the Ki.
The energy drew nearer, poised to strike Grey’s core, when the main Ki fist slammed into his Dantian. At the same moment, tendrils of Ki branching off struck Grey’s mana core. Instantly, a mini explosion erupted inside him.
"ARGHHHH!" he roared, vomiting as his body spasmed uncontrollably. Cold sweat drenched him, as if a bucket of ice water had been dumped all over his skin.
Slowly, something black began seeping from his pores. Grey’s eyes flickered in and out of focus, darkness waving at the edges of his vision. Pain—an intense, searing pain—ravaged his body.
It felt like millions of needles pricking him from the inside out. The agony became unbearable, and his body collapsed to the ground. His breathing grew ragged and wild as he gasped in pain.
’Is... is... this how it all ends? Dy... dy... dying while chasing power? Sh... shit!’ Grey cursed internally as his hands went limp and his breathing grew so faint it seemed he had already died.
Swoosh!
"What’s wrong with him?"
"I think he’s dying."
"How could you just stand there and watch him do something so risky?"
"It’s not my fault. This world has someone overseeing it, and it took time to get permission to come down here."
"Well, you’re the first-ever mage. Do something before he dies! We can’t afford to lose him now."
"Grey is so rash. I think placing a spell on his memories was a mistake, but I needed to keep him here longer for a reason. I don’t want him distracted by what’s happening on his continent right now."
"Who the hell needs your history lesson? Save the boy before he dies! He’s the key to stopping them."
"Right. Let me see."
"And hurry up before one of those families comes in here!" a brown-haired individual said, glancing nervously at the white-haired old man beside him.
"Don’t rush me, damn it," the old man—the first-ever mage—snapped as he crouched beside Grey. His eyes suddenly glowed white, his hands glowing with power.
"Crap! I’m... I’m losing him. I... I think he really is dying."
"What?!" the brown-haired individual shouted in shock.
