Chapter 487: Chapter 401: One for Day Use, One for Night Use
May 28, Mongfera’s two-story mansion, a working day.
"Hey, why don’t you just join Belladett?"
Yvalin tiptoed and squatted on the statue of Meiwa the Holy Knight, as if showing off her outstanding sense of balance, "Even if you leave Mongfera, where do you think you could escape to? The latest ’Family Rankings’ from the Gospel has you offending nine of them; the royal family is issuing an imperial warrant for you, the Red Hats are waiting to use you for points; your contract with Hanna is definitely an unfair Slave contract—she’s the type that takes an inch and won’t give back a foot... You can either end up as dog meat or continue being a dog, so why not be Belladett’s dog? Our benefits are so good!"
Ash was cleaning the dust-prone crevices of the statue and impatiently swatted away her hanging skirt, "But you have to work overtime!"
"I can give you weekends off!" Yvalin asserted, "A whole two days off each month! One more day than everyone else! You can rest one day and spend the next!"
Damn, I used to have two days off a month before I crossed over, and I still get two days off a month after crossing over; didn’t I just cross over in vain!?
And how on earth do the people of Mongfera manage to get loans for spending with only one day off? The efficiency of this consumer loop is ridiculously high, breaking the work truth that ’overtime won’t let you spend your money!’"
"But can you protect me?" Ash asked, "I’m a wanted man now."
"Gospel Book." Yvalin held her face with both hands, "I can directly use Gospel Points to ask the Gospel Book to erase your warrant."
"But isn’t the warrant issued by the Empire?" Ash asked, shocked, "The Gospel Book can directly control the Empire? No, rather, the Gospel can directly influence social operations?"
"In the hands of ordinary people, in the hands of mages, and in our hands, Gospel Points have different values," Yvalin explained, "Ordinary people can only use Gospel Points to buy fleeting happiness, mages can exchange Gospel Points for powerful abilities, and in our hands, Gospel Points are Universal Energy."
"Gospel Points are a lot like currency. When you have enough circulating currency to rival a nation, you can influence prices, leverage social machinery, trigger mass events, and even literally ’rival nations’; though Gospel Points aren’t circulating, the Gospel Book, a universal wish machine, simplifies your ’spending methods’ to the extreme. Say you want to buy a bag of chocolate balls, you have to know where to buy them, then purchase via a medium, and wait to receive them, but the Gospel Book..."
Yvalin summoned the Gospel Book and then a bag of chocolate balls appeared in her left hand, "Although it’s expensive, it indeed skips all the steps... Want some?"
"Give me one to taste unconditionally," Ash answered tightly.
Yvalin glared at him and stuffed a chocolate ball into his mouth, "Although it surely takes a huge cost, erasing your warrant is something Belladett can still manage."
"If it’s so powerful, then why doesn’t the Red Hat just use Gospel Points to capture me?"
"The Gospel Book can change weather, bring the dead back to life, distort reality, but it cannot pin down the ever-changing human heart, nor can it directly access a person’s privacy," Yvalin explained, tossing the chocolate balls in her hand, "These chocolate balls might be from a store; the Gospel Book merely helped me transport them here and paid on my behalf, rather than controlling a chef to instantly make them for me."
"Changing the warrant is the same. The Gospel Book won’t erase the thought of capturing you from people’s minds, but it will directly block the imperial warrant, cancel the bounty on capturing you, and block all related news about you in various media channels, effectively cancelling your warrant."
"So from this perspective, Yisu’s royal family actually isn’t that concerned about you," Yvalin continued, eating a chocolate ball, "If they were truly serious, they would post your warrants everywhere you can see, offering a reward substantial enough to twist the public’s will—if the incentive was big enough, I wouldn’t be able to suppress the greed of the Mongferans either."
"From what you’re saying, you could work things out in reality, make other leaders not hate me, and then the empire would cancel the warrant?"
"It’s indeed possible," Yvalin said, "As long as you sign here on this paper..."
"Marriage certificate?"
"It’s an IOU, the amount isn’t that big, just a mere billion Gold Coins. For the deposit, I only need 90% of your brainpower; you’re not using that much anyway."
"No way!" Ash shook his head, "Why does Igula get such good treatment, and I have to mortgage 90% of my brain?"
"Hmm..." Yvalin pondered, "If you want Igula’s treatment, it’s not impossible to discuss..."
"Eh?" Ash was taken aback, "You also want to marry me?"
Blue hair suddenly pulled out a gold coin from her bag, slipped it into Ash’s shirt pocket as compensation, then sharply chopped him on the head.
"How dare you insult me like this..." Ash clenched his teeth as he pocketed the coin.
"Let’s not even talk about how I don’t rate your un-Miracle-selected, poor-quality native genes," Yvalin huffed, "Belladett Family Heads never marry. But I do know, faced with the number one beauty of Mongfera like me, it’s inevitable for you to have such delusions."
"It’s just as well — that way at least my future kids won’t blame me for their height problems..."
Watching Yvalin nonchalantly produce nearly a ton of Gold Coins which smacked onto the floor with a loud thud, Ash defiantly raised his head, "Can I wear a helmet?"
"You want to impress, and you want a helmet? Do you think such a good deal exists?"
"Blue-haired Goblin... I’m not talking about you!"
After Yvalin briskly got off Ash, the battered Ash stubbornly stashed the coins into his bosom.
Since most Technique Spirits had been converted to Two-winged, and Ash had been fighting in the Void Realm much too often these days, the overworked Technique Spirits were starving fast. His Gold Coins were barely enough to feed them, and swindling some money from Yvalin, the great capitalist, solved his urgent need.
Ash could have asked Hanna for money, but she insisted on him showing possession of Technique Spirits, then allotted funding based on the number of Spirits. If Ash asked for money frequently, Hanna would question why he used the Spirits so often, whether he was paying dues somewhere else, or whether he was starting a business behind the boss’s back. Ash felt that continuing like this would sooner or later expose anomalies in the Void Realm Exploration, so he tried not to reach out to Hanna for funds.
"So are you still not willing to join Belladett?" Yvalin said, "I could give you a very lenient contract."
"You’ve been harassing me for days," Ash said, "Honestly, isn’t Harvey actually your better choice? He’s bound to inherit your ancestors’ legacy — dig up your family grave, no less."
"His trouble is really too much. Actually, I never thought of attracting him from the beginning." Yvalin shrugged, "As for the Angel Necromancy inheritance... That’s the Angel’s inheritance, not the family’s. Harvey in the recording was right; the Belladett have no right to the Angel Inheritance. I just need to hold the Dominion Faction and the Belladett."
"I only need you and Igula." Yvalin looked at him, "Name your price, and I don’t believe Belladett can’t satisfy your appetite!"
"As long as the treatment isn’t worse than Igula’s," Ash continued wiping the statue with a wet cloth, having just been roughly handled by the Mistress, but still, a lowly Deacon like him had to work.
"If you’re still unwilling to talk..." Yvalin hesitated a bit, "No problem, I can agree!"
"Didn’t you say you couldn’t marry? Oh, I get it, we could only be lovers?"
"Bullshit! I just think you’d also suit Anfeier quite well."
Ash was shocked, "Wait, isn’t Anfeier currently in a heated romance with Igula? Are you asking me to steal Igula’s lover?"
"Anfeier isn’t limited to just one lover." Yvalin appraised him seriously, "Actually, think about it, you and Igula, one smart, one dumb; one cool, one cheery; one refined, one rough; one for day use, one for night use—it’s perfect to marry both."
"Who’s for day use and who’s for night use... Never mind." Ash sighed helplessly, "Can’t you give me terms that don’t involve sending wives?"
"You really just want to know about the contract with Igula, don’t you?" Yvalin coyly murmured, "I knew you were just humoring me."
"Who says so? If your terms are good enough, I’d definitely be willing!"
"If you’re so concerned about Igula, so unwilling for Igula to stay in Belladett, then why didn’t you disrupt their date that night?" Yvalin bent over to look at Ash working, "My original plan was hoping you’d successfully cause trouble and make Igula despise you guys, pushing him completely to our side—otherwise, do you think it’s that easy to throw a remote control away?"
"You owe Harvey, whom you crushed underfoot, an apology!"
Ash said irritably, "I just think Igula is smarter than me. Since he thinks there’s no problem, why should I presume to interfere? And..."
"What if you fell for him for real?"
Yvalin coaxingly said, "Exactly, since even Igula, the smart one, is willing to join us, why won’t you follow along?"
Ash, carrying his bucket to another statue, wrung out his cloth and continued his work.
"Because he didn’t call me to join."
The Cult Leader shrugged, "He probably thinks I have a better future with Miss Hanna."
