Mage And Wolf -
Chapter 275
Chapter 275: Chapter 275
Elder Song guides us smoothly through the portal in the refugee camp after a few minutes, still carrying Gerald in his arms. We take the long way back towards the pack compound, since we don’t want to lead anyone who might be following us directly to a group of refugees and other civilians.
Plus it’s raining here, which should render most methods of conventional tracking useless after only a few hours, washing away scents and everything else.
With the amount of destruction we caused, they should be busy at least that long, and the Divine Transfer prefers to resort to oracles for everything, setting the timing to some perceived opportune moment instead of blindly charging in and blowing up random targets like a certain someone I know.
Who me? No, definitely not.
We’re almost back to the compound when it finally dawns on Gerald that Elder Song is still stroking his tail, brushing it to a glossy shine and perfectly tangle free.
"Are you about done? You can kindly set me down now, you old lunatic."
That makes both me and Song laugh. Who is he to call us the crazy ones, he’s the one going around disguised as a little girl. Though he might have a point with Lunatic, Elder Song is a bit of an oddball at the best of times.
"As much as I appreciate the revelation that came from witnessing your technique firsthand, I do believe that spell will have to be added to the declaration of prohibited magics, and banned from use on sentient beings, effective immediately." The investigator informs me with a strict glare.
"Don’t be like that, it’s just like any other perfectly mundane spell, it can even be used to generate stable energy for daily use. It’s just prone to misuse is all, no need to go all out and list it as prohibited. Plus, isn’t there some sort of formal procedure for that? You know, a vote, an appeals process and such?"
"The Young Miss has a point, it takes decades to finish signing a newly prohibited spell into regulation after the required hundred planetary councils agree that it needs to be prohibited. Plus, without seeing it in action, how many would understand it? They’ll think it’s just a modified explosion spell and dismiss your request without even reviewing it, since the principles of Explosion type magics are well documented. I should know, I did a lot of the documenting." Elder Song agrees with my viewpoint.
"Forget formalities, there has to be a better way to deal with them instead of simply blowing everything up. There’s another city I need to investigate, one that still stands on the side of the old status quo. Now that we’ve formally met, you should be able to contact me with your communication tokens if you need me in the future.
At the very least, could you let me know if you’re going to do something insane again so I can get all the investigators out of sight of the aftermath? If they don’t see it first hand at least they’ll be limited to conjecture about what actually happened."
That sounds reasonable of him. "Deal, we’ll send you a heads up before things get crazy again. But hopefully the Divine Transfer will lay low for a while. If we’re really lucky, that planet’s Oracle was in the Sect compound that we blew up, and they’ll be a long time sending someone else to come bother us. I really do wish they’d stop doing that by the way, so if you’re talking with them, let them know that I’ll gladly stop blowing them up if they stop being annoying."
Gerald shakes his head, not convinced that I mean a word I’ve said, other than the promise to give him a heads up, and even his acceptance of that looks iffy. "I’m off then. Be safe until I see you again, and it’s good to see you’ve recovered from your punishment Song."
Elder Song nods his goodbye and Gerald takes on his wolf kin little girl persona again, rejoining the other children of the Refugee camp and their discussion about the joys of hot and cold running water in every house. If you didn’t know his real personality or identity you would never guess that there was anything out of the ordinary.
"Did you get everything you needed done? You’re back pretty quickly." Lelou greets me from the entry of the pack house as I make my way over to get out of the drizzling rain.
"Yeah, we just went to do a little target practice with an experimental spell. Everything went smoothly, and we should have delayed the Divine Transfer on that planet for a while, so no need to stress for a while. Do you want to join me in making some sweets? I’m almost entirely certain that if these kids are stoked about hot running water that they were far from wealthy enough to have every tried Mystic Cooking made desserts."
That seems to be easier said than done, the entire kitchen is cram packed with Omegas making the evening meal, saving as many cores as they can and using up the Pack’s stored goods first before dipping into the more versatile Monster Cores that power the creation spell. The best we can manage is a spot outside the kitchen door in the dining room with a collection of bowls and a folding table to make puddings.
They’re quick, simple, and everyone loves pudding, so it should be worth it, and it’s a great way to pass the time while we wait to see how the hunt that the newcomers and the Pack trackers went on turned out.
I hope they’re getting along well, and they’re able to find good targets without getting overwhelmed.
I shouldn’t have worried though, they’re all back over the course of the next hour, the scheduled time for dinner being their target return time. If there’s one thing Werewolves are good at, other than knowing who forgot to shower, it’s making it home for dinner. Like their wild cousins, they’re always up for a good meal.
