Mage And Wolf -
Chapter 204
Chapter 204: Chapter 204
"The Avatar requests me specifically?" I say, somewhat startled and Beta John chuckles.
"He believes we will need a Child of the Moon Goddess, and their enhanced senses, to recover it and he doesn’t really trust us. So we suggested you." John explains.
"Well, in that case, I really shouldn’t refuse. Where do we need to go to find this supposed relic?"
The green robed Dragon opens up a map of a continent I don’t recognize and points to a mountain range. "According to our information it should have been moved to this location about six hundred years ago. Whether it’s still there is uncertain, we believe only a Lycan or werewolf can enter the cave itself. If the relic is no longer there we will gather evidence and move along to the next possible location."
She sets a big stack of research notes on the table and Amanda sighs. "It’s no fair, nobody invites me to come along on random adventures. Why do I anyways have to wait behind like a princess in a castle?"
"Technically you are a princess in a castle. But I heard a rumor Alpha Reisleing thought you were pretty, so maybe one day you’ll get to play capture the flag with us." Beta John winks at her and she blushes.
Alpha Reisleing was a strapping young Lycan in his late teenage years, oldest son of one of the Alphas present for the feast after the game. The Nephilim King doesn’t look at all happy at the prospect of his daughter being courted by a Lycan Alpha and I can see him considering marriage alliances already.
"He had better be quick or his lovely bride to be might be taken." Paula laughs, looking at her father in law.
They’d make a cute couple. They’re about the same apparent age, plus Amanda is short for a Nephilim, putting them nearly matched in height.
"His fur is almost the same dark Grey as your wings." I point out and Amanda giggles.
"Enough of that. I’ve got your effects from when you arrived. Ask for anything you need and I’ll see that you get it." The King says, deflecting attention from his precious younger daughter.
"Thank you, your Majesty, but with this I’ve got everything with me already." I curtsey formally.
"Not going to jump in my arms and call him Papa this time?" Amanda laughs.
"No, we should save that for greetings and not departures." I tell her with a wink as the Priestess starts packing up her map, clearly eager to get on the road. I wonder how far it is to the mountain range in the map, I can’t see any mountains from here.
"Safe travels! Come back and visit sometime." Amanda calls as we walk out of the palace gates, waving goodbye.
"We should be there tonight if you can keep up with the full sized Lycans. The Dragons will be flying." Beta John says doubtfully, making me laugh.
"Last one to today’s camp site has to make dinner? I’ll have you know, I was a kitchen Omega in my youth and I’m an apprentice Mystic chef." I grin at John and we’re off at a run leaving the others to chase while the Dragons laugh.
We’re darting through the trees at an incredible speed, this is the first opportunity I’ve had to test my new abilities, both since my body evolved and since I reached the Immortal Realm.
"No fair, you got a head start!" One of our partners yells from way behind us and I can hear a local Nephilim resident laugh as we flash by.
"Get a move on boys, the flag is putting distance on you!" The local calls out and John howls in laughter.
I can’t keep up with Beta John in speed, but we’re in a forest of giant old growth trees and I’m more agile, able to use trees as launch pads instead of dodging them. It’s making an incredible racket with me bouncing off trees at hundreds of kilometers an hour and John laughing while the others hurl curses up at us. I haven’t seen anyone that might complain about the noise all day long, other than a few Nephilim living near the Palace, unless you count the two Green Dragons floating above us, watching the chase.
We’re coming up on a lake though, where I’ll lose much of my advantage, having to fly, or burn energy to run on the water. Being larger, with long legs, they’ve got an advantage on open ground. I launch off the cliff across the lake, chasing John. A few hundred meters out I find that infusing a bit of divine energy into my steps greatly increases my own ground speed to the point I can almost keep up with the Beta.
He’s slacking, not expecting the increase in my speed, just a few more steps and I’ll be on him. His danger sense kicks in at the last second though and he leaps away just before I can grab his tail, eyes wide in surprise.
"Careful Beta, or you’ll lose to an unranked warrior." I tease and the Beta snorts in amusement.
The mountains begin just the other side of the lake and John points at a plateau in the distance. "That’s the camp site, best of luck."
With that he’s gone in a blur, leaving me in his wake. I arrive barely a minute after him and look around. It’s a popular spot, there are signs of an army or Sect camped here recently. Oh, how I wish I had my tent.
John pulls a device that looks like an old fashioned compass from his pocket and gives it a shake, opening up into a cabin with log walls and a cedar shake roof.
"A gift from the Celestials. They’re talented with space magic and make all sorts of travel equipment." He explains.
"If only I wasn’t a poor girl from a mortal Realm. I’ve got a tent made from a Giant’s storage bag back home, it packs to a large bundle and isn’t nearly as cool looking as this. But it’s huge inside." I say sadly.
We’ve showered, changed, and sat down for coffee with the Dragons by the time the rest of the Lycans start to arrive.
The final one in is giving us all an angry glare as he comes in panting. "I swear you cheated." he insists and the others tease him for slacking during training.
"Don’t worry, I’ll convince the Gamma to increase your training when you get home. You’ll be able to keep up with the pack warriors soon. What’s for dinner?" Beta John jokes with a hungry look.
