Loving The Temperamental Adonis -
Chapter 243: Trust
Chapter 243: Trust
"Am I, Wayner? Haven’t you told her about her father being alive? And here I thought you loved her," Owen said with a smug smile as he suddenly realized he could twist the truth and make Mia see Neil as a liar who’d kept her away from her family, knowing how much she longed to know who her father was. He would so much enjoy seeing them fight before their separation. Knowing how Mia was, she would definitely believe him if he told her how her father loved her and was looking for her.
With those thoughts, Owen continued to speak with fake sympathy. "Wayner, how could you keep her in the dark? You know well enough how much her father has been searching for her, and yet you didn’t tell her about it. Her father is alive and if you hadn’t destroyed his business, he’d still be a healthy man right now and not lying on his sick bed on the verge of death."
Mia felt her heart drop to her stomach at those words. Her father was alive all this while and Neil knew it and didn’t tell her about it? She glanced at her husband and noticed how his jaw was clenched tightly as he stared at Owen like he’d murder him. He was so angry she could feel the heat of rage emitting from him, his eyes were so dark they blazed with an intensity that could have set the whole warehouse on fire.
Neil’s muscles tensed up, veins popping in his neck as his rage boiled over. He wanted nothing more than to throttle Owen with his bare hands, to wipe that smug grin off his face forever. The heat of his anger radiated off him in waves, filling the air with an almost palpable tension. His jaw clenched so tightly it looked as if it might shatter, and his eyes were dark, stormy pools of fury, flames of rage flickering in them that made Mia shivered a little in his arms.
"You claim to love her but you are killing her father behind her back and keeping her away from the only family she has," Owen continued as he noticed the look of betrayal in Mia’s eyes as she stared at Wayner. Yes, get angry and blame him for destroying your life! Owen thought as he watched his words take effect on the couple.
Mia stared at Neil’s angry face, he wasn’t even looking at her but at Owen. His grip on her had become so tight she could feel pain under her knees. She stared at his clenched jaw, and then she did something that surprised Neil, who thought she believed what Owen was telling her. She raised her hand and spread her fingers against his clenched jaw. She caressed his cheek and forced him to look down at her.
"Neil," she called softly, when he looked down at her, his expression quickly took a sixty degree turn from his rage to tenderness and warmth, the overwhelming presence around him immediately subsided like flames getting extinguished by water.
"Is he telling the truth? I will only believe anything you tell me, not him. If my father is indeed alive, why did you keep it away from me?" she asked, stroking his cheek and looking up at his gaze. She knew Owen was just like a devil who plants seeds of doubt in one’s heart, and the last thing she’d do was believe him over Neil. If Neil didn’t tell her about her father, there must be a reason for it. Anyway, even her mother Elizabeth didn’t tell her about him, which meant something was off, so why should she blame Neil for keeping it away from her?
Neil looked down at his wife with love in his eyes. For a moment when she went stiff in his arms he’d thought she’d believed Owen and thought of him as a traitor who’d hurt her father, but the look she had in her eyes now, was nothing but love and trust. She’d only believe anything he told her whether it was the truth or lie, because she loved him. He knew it, and could feel it. He couldn’t ask for more in life than a woman like her, and he leaned into her caress to bask in her love and warmth as he replied,
"I didn’t tell you because he is not worthy of you. He did terrible things to you that are not worth remembering, you don’t need him in your life. He is a monster, and Owner is becoming just like him." He whispered, kissing her palm, "Don’t let him get into your head. You have no father, and don’t bother trying to remember him, I’ll explain more to you once we leave here. Okay?"
Mia nodded, "Okay," believing him and hardening her heart to not let herself take Owen’s words for the truth in any way. She’d believe anything Neil said a million times over anyone, and she trusted him about her father being a monster.
Though she’d only had faint memories of her past flashing into her mind, she could still remember one certain one that always gripped her unexpectedly. She remembered calling a man father, but instead of showing her love, he’d hit her twice on the face. She hadn’t been able to see his face, but she’d forever remember the pain of his rejection, which she’d always thought was her mind playing tricks, but now it was clear that man who’d hit her was indeed her father...
Mia felt her heart tighten, and she clenched her fingers around Neil’s shirt to control her emotions. She’d rather hold on to the belief that her father was dead and he loved her, rather than accept the cruel man in her faint memories as her father. And now that she’d confirmed he was her father, she didn’t want to remember him more than she already had, nor have anything to do with him. Some things were better off unremembered and forgotten, just like her childhood memories that had been lost. She had her own family now, Neil and her unborn children.
"Are you alright?" Neil whispered when he noticed her dejected expression. He wished as hell she hadn’t been told about Kelvin and that he could kiss her and make her forget, but he knew better than to do that when they were still in the mouth of danger with Owner looking at them in anticipation as if waiting for the part where they’d fight each other.
"I’m fine," she said, forcing a smile to assure him.
Owen, who was waiting for the drama to happen and hear them arguing, was taken aback to see and hear them whispering to each other like he wasn’t there with armed men. Did they think they were invisible, or were they just ignoring him and whispering to each other to annoy the hell out of him? What were they whispering to each other and why wasn’t Mia demanding for answers?
"Mia, aren’t you going to ask about who your father is and what Wayner did to him?" he said, displeased that none of the things he’d envisioned was happening.
"I don’t want to know about him, and whatever Neil did to him... he must have deserved it. I don’t have a father, and you can give up trying to make me believe I had one who loved me, Owen. Just like you, my father is dead to me."
Owen’s expression immediately turned hurt at that, he felt a stabbing pain in his heart, a pain of her repeated rejection and betrayal gripped him until he felt he’d suffocate from it. Laughing humorlessly, he said, "Do you have any idea what I’ve done to make you mine, Mia? Do you know what I’ve sacrificed for you? Why can’t you see that nobody can love you like I do? Why?!" He yelled like a maniac, his voice bouncing over the walls.
Mia’s eyes hardened and she wiggled out of Neil’s arms until he let her go and she stood on her feet and faced Owen, standing protectively in front of her husband. "Stop this and let us go, Owen. The boy I knew in the past would never put me in pain. I’m in pain, Owen, and It would hurt me more than anything if you were to hurt my husband, please, let this go." She said softly, almost sounding pleading.
Owen’s face twisted with anguish. "Do you have any idea what you are asking me to do, Mia? You are asking a hell of a lot, I can never let you go with that fucker!"
As Owen continued his rant, Neil wrapped an arm around Mia’s waist and pulled her back until her back was against his front and whispered into her ear, his lips barely moving. "I’m going to attack the man standing closer to us to take his gun, and once I do, find your way behind the pillar behind me and hide. I need to fight to make a way for us."
Mia wanted to argue, but she couldn’t speak here as none of Owen’s men, nor Owen himself, noticed Neil’s whispered instructions. She placed her hand against his on her waist to silently tell him to be careful and not get hurt or shot, he seemed to understand her because he stroked her belly twice in acknowledgement.
Owen continued his ranting without noticing the couple’s exchange as he was too angry to pay attention, his voice growing more desperate. "I’ve never wanted something so badly as I want you, Mia. I’d rather see you with no one than not have you myself."
Mia gave a barely perceptible nod, ready to follow Neil’s plan. Neil slowly moved her behind him, his eyes never leaving Owen’s as the idiot continued to rant on. The moment Mia rushed safely behind the pillar only three step away from where they stood, Neil’s focus sharpened, his body coiling with the readiness of a predator as he moved in a speed that caught everyone off guard.
Owen, realizing too late what was happening, shouted, "Stop him!" But Neil was already moving, a blur of motion as he took down the first man who lunged at him and took his weapon. He then used the man as a shield in front of him as he began to shoot the rest down.
Gunfire erupted in the warehouse, the noise deafening. Neil fought with a ferocity driven by love and desperation, his every move calculated to protect Mia who sat in the corner with her hands pressed against her ears. She hated the sounds of guns and the sight of them, but knowing her husband was fighting amidst hundreds of men, she crawled to the side of the pillar and peeked her head out to watch. She watched as he moved effortlessly and fought the men, stricking them before they even realize his movement.
"Stay down, Mia!" Neil shouted, his voice cutting through the noise as he caught sight of her peeking out of the pillar.
Owen, who was also hiding behind another pillar to avoid being shot at by the psycho who was fighting off his men so effortlessly like they were some amateur assassin’s when in truth they were skilled men from the underworld, noticed Mia in the other pillar. He couldn’t dare step out knowing Wayner would shoot him, and he couldn’t fight him, thus he took out a gun from his pants and crawled towards the other pillar Mia was hiding at, peeking out to watch Neil. He walked up behind her and grabbed her by the arm and yanked her up, pointing the gun at her head before she could even react.
Mia stiffened when she felt the gun placed on her head and heard Owen say, "I guess you are the only means of stopping that maniac." He said then yelled at the top of his voice over the sounds of the guns so Neil could hear him, "Wayner! Stop your craziness right now or I swear I will blow off Mia’s head!"
Those words did it, Neil freeze in the process of shooting another man.
