Love In Disguise: Rebirth of the Heiress -
Chapter 75
Chapter 75: Chapter 75
Men were annoying.
Men pissed me off.
Men, like Jason and Lucian, were apparently the bane of my existence.
I stood in my living room, arms crossed, glaring at the two uninvited guests lounging in my space. Jason was leaning against the wall like he owned the place, while Lucian inspected the books on my shelf with his usual air of detached curiosity.
"This is my apartment," I snapped, breaking the awkward silence. "Why are you two here?"
Jason shrugged. "I live in this building. Technically, I’m just visiting my neighbor."
Lucian smirked, his eyes glinting with amusement. "Jason followed you, so I decided to follow him."
I rolled my eyes so hard I almost saw my brain. "Brilliant logic. Truly."
Jason crossed his arms, clearly unfazed by my irritation. "Look, we just have some questions about what happened today. The murder and everything."
I glared at him. "What are you? The police? Because last I checked, I was already cleared."
Lucian’s lips twitched. "We’re just... concerned."
"Oh, concerned?" I threw up my hands, exasperated. "Well, I feel so much better now."
I turned my back on them, unbuttoning my jacket and tossing it onto a chair. I headed for the kitchen, muttering, "I need water if I’m going to deal with this nonsense."
I barely made it two steps before Lucian’s voice stopped me cold.
"What’s that?"
I turned, frowning. "What’s what?"
He gestured toward my shoulder, his sharp gaze locking onto the spot just above my collarbone where the half-moon mark was faintly visible.
I stiffened. "It’s... a tattoo."
Lucian hummed, his expression unreadable. Jason, however, froze mid-lean, his eyes narrowing as they flickered between Lucian and me.
"It’s new," I added defensively, tugging the fabric of my shirt over it.
Lucian tilted his head slightly, as though considering something. "Interesting choice."
"Yeah, well, it’s my body, my choice," I snapped, turning back toward the kitchen.
I had just reached the counter when an icy touch seared into the mark on my shoulder.
Pain shot through me like an electric shock, cold and burning all at once. I screamed, spinning around to find Lucian standing far too close, his hand still hovering near my shoulder.
"What the fuck?!" I shouted, clutching the spot where the pain radiated.
The words died on my lips as I looked up and saw his eyes.
Glowing. Red.
"What... what are you?" I whispered, my voice trembling.
Jason moved forward, shoving Lucian back with enough force to make him stumble. "Lucian," Jason growled, his voice low and threatening.
Lucian held up his hands, his usual calm demeanor replaced with something darker. "Relax. I was just... confirming something."
Jason’s eyes flicked to mine, his expression unreadable. "Kiara, are you okay?"
I nodded slowly, still cradling my shoulder. "No, I’m not okay! What the hell just happened? His eyes—"
Lucian cut me off, his voice smooth but firm. "You should sit down."
I glared at him. "I don’t think so. Not until someone explains what’s going on."
Jason stepped between us, his broad frame blocking Lucian from view. "Kiara, just—"
"No," I said firmly, backing away. "You two come into my house, act like you own the place, and now this? I want answers."
Lucian sighed, brushing a hand through his hair. "It’s... complicated."
"Try me," I shot back.
Jason groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose. "This is going to sound insane, but..."
"But?" I prompted, already bracing myself for whatever nonsense was about to leave his mouth.
He sighed heavily and rolled up the sleeve of his shirt, revealing a faint mark on his wrist. It was an unmistakable shape: a half-moon, identical to the one on my shoulder.
"This is the rebirth mark."
My eyes widened as I took a step back. "You... you’re reborn too?"
Jason gave a small nod, his expression cautious. "Yeah. I was wondering when you’d figure it out."
Lucian, leaning casually against the wall, cut in with his usual calm demeanor. "And I’m here because this isn’t just about being reborn, Kiara."
I frowned, crossing my arms. "What the hell does that mean? What are you even Mdoing here, Lucian?"
Jason scoffed, gesturing toward Lucian. "Turns out, this guy isn’t just some shady mafia boss like I thought."
Lucian’s eyes glinted with annoyance. "I told you, I’m not mafia."
"Right," Jason said, rolling his eyes. "He’s apparently something much worse. A death God."
Lucian stepped forward, his dark presence filling the room. "I’m an intermediary," he said smoothly. "Someone who once had access to a realm beyond life and death. But thanks to circumstances beyond my control, I’ve been locked out of my home, and now I’m stuck here."
"Your... home?" I asked, incredulous. "What are you even talking about?"
Jason answered before Lucian could. "His ’home’ is apparently some hellish realm or dimension or whatever where souls pass through. His family—" Jason hesitated, glancing at Lucian.
Lucian’s gaze darkened. "My family was killed. Murdered by those who wanted to disrupt the balance of life and death."
"What balance?" I asked, looking between them.
Lucian’s voice was low, almost reverent. "The balance that keeps the worlds of the living and the dead separate. Without it, the living start to experience fragments of the past. The dead begin to rise, lost, seeking revenge or resolution. People began to sacrifice their souls."
Jason sighed, sitting heavily on the arm of my couch. "And apparently, we’re part of this mess. People like us—those with these marks—are the key to fixing it."
"Fixing it how?" I asked.
Lucian’s gaze bore into mine. "By fulfilling the revenge tied to your death."
My mouth dropped. "Revenge..."
Jason looked at me, his eyes somber. "Whoever caused your death in your past life."
I froze, my mind racing. Gabriel. Jessica. The betrayal. My death.
Lucian continued. "The half-moons on your body signify that your soul has been chosen to rectify the imbalance. But there’s a catch. If you don’t fulfill your revenge, if the people don’t die, you die. Again."
