Love In Disguise: Rebirth of the Heiress -
Chapter 54
Chapter 54: Chapter 54
Bang!
My head hit the underside of Gabriel’s desk as I ducked down, barely catching myself before I cursed out loud.
Footsteps and laughter drifted into the office, and I scrambled to keep quiet, pressing myself back as far as I could under the table, which, as I noticed, wasn’t exactly dust-free. The area beneath the desk was cramped, a maze of stray cables and years-old dust bunnies clinging to the corners.
The faint scent of cheap cologne clung to the space, probably remnants of Gabriel’s all-too-frequent visits to his office after hours.
Just as I adjusted my position, a pair of legs stepped into view, followed by another. Jessica and Gabriel.
"This office is way too quiet without me," Gabriel drawled, and then I heard the thud as he set Jessica down on the desk.
He wasted no time, and soon enough, I heard their muffled voices turn into soft giggles and low murmurs. I held my breath, staying still. But then, like the universe’s cruel joke on me, I heard the unmistakable sound of kissing, wet and desperate, like neither of them had any restraint left.
The shuffle of clothes and more smooching sounds.
My stomach twisted, but not with the pain that had hit me in the past.
Instead, I felt a strange numbness settle in as Jessica’s soft moans filled the air, followed by Gabriel’s voice, low and pleased.
"You’re such a naughty girl," he murmured, and then a faint smack, probably a spank, broke through the silence, making my nose wrinkle.
Jessica’s voice came out in a flirty whine."Gabriel..."
"Take off those damn panties," he murmured, laughing. "God, after dealing with that bitch all day, I’m beyond ready to be with you."
I closed my eyes, trying to stop the bike from rising in my throat.
So, this was his post-breakup ritual.
Disrespect me in my own office, then run off to his mistress for relief. In another life, this might have shattered me. But now?
Now I was just... tired.
Then a thought hit me, cold and calculating.
I reached for my phone, carefully angling it to record their little performance. If they wanted to play dirty, then fine, I’d have my own ammunition. Maybe a little snapshot of this moment could make its way onto the company server—or better yet, the group chats Jessica so adored using to ruin other people’s reputations.
But as I held the phone, the thought of the plan hit me, guilt twisting in my chest. This was exactly the kind of thing Jessica had done to me before, the way she’d spread those photos and humiliated me without a second thought.
The way she probably did for Lola.
Did I really want to stoop to her level?
I swallowed hard, setting the phone down.
No. I was better than that. I’d come here for revenge, but it didn’t mean I had to become her.
Instead, I did my best to tune them out, pressing my hands to my ears as their voices dropped to murmurs. But soon enough, their conversation shifted, catching my attention again.
"So, when are you leaving her?" Jessica asked, her tone dripping with impatience.
Gabriel laughed, a low, self-satisfied sound. "Soon. Once I get what I need from her. It’s not like she’s worth anything beyond that."
Jessica huffed, clearly annoyed. "She’s got nothing. You keep saying you’re getting something from her, but what is there? I mean, you said she had no assets, right?"
Gabriel paused, then chuckled. "Not exactly. There’s a little inheritance coming her way, a nice sum that she’s totally unaware of. I saw it a while ago before she started to turn into this new person. It was hidden in some family accounts. By the time she realizes it, I’ll already have it in my hands."
My heart pounded.
Inheritance?
What inheritance?
I didn’t have a single thing to my name in my past life. Gabriel had used every ounce of my wealth, squeezed me dry. So, what exactly was he talking about?
Could there be something hidden that I didn’t know about?
Jessica laughed, oblivious to the chills running down my spine. "Well, I hope it’s soon. She’s starting to annoy me, always acting so high and mighty. She’s been insufferable lately, hasn’t she?"
"Don’t worry," Gabriel said smoothly. "She’ll be out of the picture soon enough."
They exchanged a few more giggles, then the sound of shifting footsteps filled the air as they straightened themselves out. I watched as their legs moved toward the door, still hidden beneath the desk. Jessica’s voice turned soft, seductive. "Don’t make me wait too long."
Gabriel chuckled. "Wouldn’t dream of it."
As the door clicked shut behind them, I stayed still for a few moments, processing what I’d just heard. Slowly, I crawled out from under the desk, brushing the dust off my clothes, but my mind was somewhere else.
Inheritance.
They both seemed to know about something I didn’t, something big enough to warrant Gabriel’s "patience" with me, his little charade of sticking around. And, faintly, I recalled a memory from my past life—Gabriel handing me a document to sign. I’d barely glanced at it then, lost in a haze of exhaustion. I’d assumed it was some formality, maybe for his work. But the memory was so blurred, hazy at best. Could it have been connected to this... inheritance?
If he thought he could trick me again, he was sorely mistaken. I had no intention of giving him any claim over me or my future, especially now that I knew he was after something hidden. But first, I needed to figure out exactly what this inheritance was and how he planned on getting his hands on it.
I smirked to myself as I walked out of Gabriel’s office, already forming my plan. I’d had enough of playing nice, and enough of being their little pawn. This time, I’d show them that I wasn’t the same naive girl they’d fooled in my last life. Whatever secrets they were hiding, I’d find them—and I’d make them regret underestimating me.
"Hey watch it!"
