Chapter 265: The New Barons

"Lyan, thank you for coming," the prince said, his voice commanding yet warm.

Lyan bowed slightly. "Your Highness, it’s an honor to serve." It’s a formality as he’s in front of lots of Astellians. He can’t make William, or rather the crown prince Erich lose his face in front of his retainers.

The prince nodded with an amused smile, then motioned for Lyan to join them at the large table in the center of the room. Spread out on the table was a detailed map of Astellia, with various markers indicating strategic points and areas of interest. The prince’s generals stood around the table, their faces serious as they discussed the plans for the upcoming campaign.

"We’ve received intelligence about the Count’s city, Grafen," one of the generals said, pointing to a location on the map. "It’s heavily fortified, and we anticipate significant resistance. But taking it is crucial for our advance."

Lyan studied the map, his mind already strategizing. "What are the defenses like?"

"High walls, a moat, and more than 2000 well-trained guards separated from his knights and his soldiers," another general replied. "But we believe there’s a weakness in their supply lines. If we can cut those off, we might weaken their defenses enough for an assault."

Lyan studied the map, tracing his fingers over the indicated supply lines. "If we can intercept their supplies, we can force them into a defensive position. But we’ll need precise coordination to ensure our forces can sustain the siege."

The guildmaster, Gildevart, nodded thoughtfully. "We’ve gathered intelligence from our scouts. The supply caravans travel through a narrow pass to the east. It’s well-guarded but not impregnable."

Borton, the leader of the Brave Rings mercenary group and a towering figure known for his strategic mind, leaned over the table. "I suggest a two-pronged approach. We send a smaller, agile force to disrupt the supply lines while the main army advances towards Grafen. This way, we can apply pressure from both sides."

Crown Prince Erich stroked his chin, his eyes narrowing in contemplation. "An excellent strategy. Lyan, I want you to lead the task force to cut off their supplies. Arnold will command the main army."

Lyan glanced at Arnold, a former mercenary who had proven himself a capable leader and commander. Arnold met his gaze with a nod, his eyes filled with determination. "We’ll make sure to execute the plan flawlessly, Your Highness."

The prince smiled, a glint of approval in his eyes. "Good. With both of you leading the charge, I have no doubt we will succeed."

The meeting continued, with detailed discussions on troop movements, logistics, and coordination. As the final plans were laid out, the crown prince motioned for silence. "Before we proceed, there is one more matter to address."

He stepped forward, his gaze sweeping across the room. "Lyan, Arnold, step forward."

Lyan and Arnold exchanged puzzled glances but obeyed, stepping up to stand before the prince. The knights and generals in the room watched with interest, their expressions curious.

"Both of you have shown exceptional valor and leadership," Prince Erich began, his voice resonating with authority. "Your contributions to our cause have not gone unnoticed. As such, I have decided to bestow upon you a title befitting your service."

Julius, the captain of the royal knights, stepped forward, holding a velvet cushion upon which rested two ornate badges. "These are the symbols of your new status."

The prince took one of the badges and pinned it to Lyan’s chest. "Lyan, I hereby bestow upon you the title of Baron. You have proven yourself a true leader and a wonderful asset, and I am confident that you will continue to serve with honor and distinction."

Lyan felt a surge of pride and gratitude as the badge was fastened to his tunic. "Thank you, Your Highness."

The prince then turned to Arnold, pinning the second badge to his chest. "Arnold, you too are now a Baron. Your strategic brilliance and unwavering dedication have earned you this honor. May you lead with the same courage that has brought you this far."

Arnold bowed deeply. "I am deeply honored, Your Highness. I will do my utmost to live up to this title."

The room erupted in applause, the knights and generals cheering for their newly appointed barons. Lyan and Arnold exchanged a look of mutual respect and camaraderie, their bond strengthened by this shared honor.

Prince Erich raised his hand for silence once more. "Even though this is still an unofficial bestowment, let this bestowment be a reminder of what we fight for. We fight for honor, for our people, and for a future where we can all live in peace and prosperity. Now, let us prepare for the battle ahead."

With the formalities concluded, the meeting dispersed, and the preparations began in earnest. Lyan found himself approached by various commanders and soldiers, congratulating him on his new title. He thanked them graciously, but his mind was already focused on the task ahead.

As the army gathered in the courtyard, readying for the march, Lyan took a moment to speak with Arnold. "Congratulations, Arnold. It’s a well-deserved honor."

Arnold grinned, clapping Lyan on the shoulder. "Likewise, Evocatore. It seems we’ve both come a long way from our days as mercenaries. I’ve heard a lot about the hero of the goblin king subjugation,"

Lyan nodded, his expression serious. "Indeed. I’ve heard a lot about the brilliant commander as well. I hope we can have a great battle ahead,"

They shared a moment of silent determination before parting ways to attend to their respective duties. Lyan gathered his team, a mix of skilled mercenaries and seasoned soldiers, briefing them on the mission to disrupt Grafen’s supply lines.

"Remember, our goal is to cut off their supplies without drawing too much attention," Lyan instructed. "We need to be quick and efficient. Any mistakes could jeopardize the entire operation."

The team nodded, their faces set with resolve. Among them was the ever-reliable Borton, who had decided to join the task force for this critical mission. His presence was a reassuring one, given his extensive experience and strategic mind.

As the final preparations were made, Lyan took a moment to write a letter to the women at the House of Roses. He knew that the journey ahead would be perilous, but he wanted to reassure them of his commitment to return.

Sealing the letter, he handed it to a trusted messenger with instructions to deliver it to the House of Roses. He watched as the messenger rode off, a sense of calm washing over him. No matter the dangers he faced, he carried the love and support of those dear to him.

The morning sun climbed higher in the sky as the army assembled, ready to march. The sight of ten thousand soldiers, archers, and cavalry preparing for battle was both awe-inspiring and humbling. Banners fluttered in the breeze, and the air was filled with the sound of clanking armor and murmured conversations.

Prince Erich rode to the front of the assembled forces, his presence commanding respect and attention. He raised his hand, and silence fell over the ranks.

"Soldiers of Astellia," he began, his voice carrying over the crowd, "Today we march to reclaim our land and secure a future for our people from the world! The Duke Ravindor! We face a formidable enemy, but we are united in purpose and resolve. Together, we will prevail!"

A cheer rose from the army, the sound echoing across the courtyard. Lyan felt a surge of adrenaline as he mounted his horse, Shadow, ready to lead his team into the fray. Arnold rode up beside him, his expression determined.

"Ready for this, Baron?" Arnold asked, a hint of a smile playing on his lips.

"Always," Lyan replied, his grip tightening on the reins. "Let’s show them what we’re made of."

With a final nod, the two barons spurred their horses forward, leading their respective forces out of the city. The march to Grafen had begun, and the fate of Astellia hung in the balance.

The road ahead was long and fraught with danger, but Lyan knew that he was not alone. He had the support of his comrades, the leadership of the crown prince, and the love of those waiting for him. With a heart full of determination and a mind focused on victory, Lyan rode into the unknown, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

The journey to Grafen was just beginning, and Lyan knew that the battles to come would test his strength, his courage, and his resolve. But he was ready. For his future, for his loved ones, and for the new job he got from Astellian crown prince, he would fight with everything he had. Especially in order to secure the new house where he could keep his loved ones safe.

And with that thought, the army of the crown prince marched onward, the city of Grafen looming in the distance, a symbol of the challenges and triumphs yet to come.
