Chapter 259: Protect Arkansas (8) The Desperate Attempt
"Hold the line!" he shouted, his voice carrying over the din of battle.
Lyan’s command echoed through the air, igniting a surge of determination in the defenders. His eyes scanned the battlefield, observing the coordinated chaos as his allies and their monster children engaged the enemy with ferocious intensity.
"W-What’s with this woman!? Argh!"
"S-She’s a devil!! I’m burnt!"
Josephine, her Morningstar blazing with Magria’s fire affinity, swung her weapon with devastating force, crushing attackers with molten fury. Magria, the colossal Magma Bear, roared beside her, its fiery breath incinerating enemy soldiers who dared to approach.
While on the other hand.
"H-He’s gone- Ugh!"
"T-The abomination, Gildev-" The man got beheaded in an instant before he could finish the name of the culprit.
Gildevart, the guildmaster, moved like a blur across the battlefield. His greatsword cut through the air with lightning speed, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake. His movements were so swift and precise that the enemies scarcely had time to react before they fell. His reputation as an adamantite rank mercenary was well-earned, and even Lyan couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at Gildevart’s prowess. Each swing of his sword seemed effortless, yet it decimated scores of enemies, leaving allies inspired and foes trembling.
"That old man is damn strong! " Lyan exclaimed with a wry smile. "For the Brave Rings..."
Borton, leader of the Brave Rings’ mercenary group, wielded his magic greatsword with both strength and finesse. His blade glowed with a mystical energy, carving through armor and flesh alike. He rallied his men with a commanding presence, their resolve unwavering as they held the northern wall. Alina, with her katana enhanced by dark mana, moved with a deadly grace. Her strikes were swift and lethal, the dark energy amplifying her already formidable swordsmanship. Monila, the Moonlight Butterfly, fluttered around her, its luminescent wings casting an eerie glow as it unleashed bursts of dark energy at the enemies.
"I guess that’s good," (Lyan)
"I got you, Evocatore!" A soldier sneaked from behind him. But he dodged the vertical slash with a swift side step easily and made a beautiful slash with his glaive killing four people in an instant.
"Take this!!" Belle’s voice entered his ears.
Belle, with Pilia the Papilio Slime perched on her shoulder, conjured illusions and cast powerful spells. Her purple flames erupted in waves, engulfing enemy soldiers and creating chaotic visions that disoriented them. Belle’s mastery over illusion and dark magic made her a formidable opponent, and her presence on the battlefield was both mesmerizing and terrifying. Xena, utilizing her wind magic, directed Galia the Galewing Butterfly to unleash gusts of wind that knocked enemies off their feet. Her arrows flew with pinpoint accuracy, each one finding its mark with lethal precision.
Ravia and Raine, the twin assassins, moved through the shadows with silent efficiency. Ravia’s shadow magic and Raine’s illusions created a deadly combination. Their knives struck from unseen angles, and before the enemies could react, they were already falling. The Seltas Queen and the Shadow Nymm, their monster children, added to the chaos, their swift and deadly attacks further thinning the ranks of the attackers.
"I guess the girls are fine," Lyan uttered in relief.
Among the defenders, Lyan’s monster army proved invaluable. The Acid Ants Workers and Soldiers swarmed the walls, their acidic spit corroding the armor of enemy soldiers from the walls. The Rock Golem and Ice Golem smashed through the ranks with brute strength, while the Winter Wolf Alpha and its pack harried the flanks. The Fey Mammoth’s sheer size and power crushed enemies underfoot, and the Arcane Retriever’s magical attacks pierced through the lines with devastating accuracy. The Gargoyle perched atop the walls, using its surveillance abilities to relay enemy movements to the defenders.
Amidst the chaos, Lyan himself was a force to be reckoned with. Wielding his magic glaive, he cut through the enemy with a deadly combination of strength and skill. His eyes blazed with determination as he fought, every swing of his glaive sending enemies sprawling. His and the other’s presence on the battlefield was like a beacon of hope for the defenders, his commands clear and unwavering.
"Keep pushing!" Lyan roared, his voice cutting through the clamor. "We will not let them take the city!"
The enemy soldiers, witnessing the combined might of the defenders and Lyan’s monster children, began to falter. Whispers of fear and awe spread through their ranks as they struggled to hold their ground. The defenders’ unwavering resolve and coordinated attacks were breaking the enemy’s spirit.
Suddenly, a horn sounded from the enemy lines, signaling a retreat. The Duke’s forces began to pull back, regrouping beyond the range of the defenders’ attacks. Lyan and his allies watched them retreat, their breaths heavy but their spirits high.
"They’re falling back," Josephine said, her voice filled with both relief and caution.
"For now," Lyan replied, his eyes narrowing as he surveyed the battlefield. "They’ll regroup and come at us with everything they have."
As the defenders began to regroup and tend to their wounded, Lyan called a meeting with the key leaders. They gathered at the House of Roses, the air thick with the scent of battle and the tension of impending conflict.
"This is just the beginning," Lyan said, addressing the group. "The enemy will return with greater numbers and stronger resolve. We must be prepared for their next assault."
Gildevart nodded in agreement. "Their next move will be an all-out attack. We need to strengthen our defenses,"
Josephine, her armor scorched but her spirit unyielding, spoke up. "We’ve held them off so far, but we need a strategy to break their next wave. They’ll come at us with everything they have."
Borton, ever the tactician, added, "We should reinforce the walls and prepare for a siege again. If we can hold the gates and prevent them from breaching the city, we stand a chance. When they get exhausted, we should face them head-on. The problem is how,"
Lyan’s mind raced with possibilities. He knew that the next battle would be the most challenging yet. "We need to use every advantage we have," he said. "I have an idea,"
As the defenders worked tirelessly to fortify their positions, the enemy regrouped, their numbers swelling with reinforcements. The Duke’s forces gathered beyond the walls of Arkansas, their intention clear. They would launch an all-out assault to take the city.
The sun rose on the day of the final battle, casting a golden light over the battlefield. The defenders stood ready, their hearts steeled for the coming storm. Lyan stood at the front, his magic glaive glowing with a fierce energy. Beside him, Josephine, Gildevart, Borton, and the others prepared for the fight of their lives.
"Here they come," Alina said, her katana gleaming in the sunlight.
The ground trembled as the enemy forces advanced. The defenders braced themselves, ready to meet the onslaught head-on. The first clash was brutal, the air filled with the sound of clashing steel and the cries of battle. The defenders fought with everything they had, holding their ground against the relentless assault.
Despite their valiant efforts, the enemy continued to press forward. The defenders were being pushed to their limits, and it seemed that the city’s defenses might finally buckle under the pressure.
"We finally got you, Arkansas," Alaric snorted but suddenly noticed something amiss from their back. "Hm? What’s that?"
"Argh!"
"M-Monster!!"
"I-Impossible!!"
His mercenaries soldiers are getting thrown right and left by a small group of people from behind.
"What a desperate attempt. They’re trying to split the army’s focus by putting their elite group to sandwich us from behind? Ridiculous. Even with those monsters that whatever method they tamed them with wouldn’t help them win this war against our large number," Varkas snorted, but Alaric stayed stern as he observed the situation.
Gildevart moved like lightning, his greatsword cutting through the enemy with ease. His speed and precision were unmatched, and his presence on the battlefield was a beacon of hope for the defenders. Lyan’s monster army fought with ferocity, the Acid Ants spitting acid to repel attackers and the Golems smashing through enemy lines. The Winter Wolf Alpha and its pack tore through the flanks, while the Fey Mammoth trampled foes underfoot.
"Tch!" Lyan clicked his tongue, and his eyes met Gildevart.
Gildevart nods.
Lyan didn’t bring the girls to come with him because it was too dangerous for them to join him in this role. Lyan knows that no matter how great their defense is, the only way to survive is actually to abandon the city.
But he can’t do that.
So Lyan and Gildevart decided to bet on their life and use their full power to wreak havoc as much as they could, hoping that they could reduce the number to an even number at their limit.
"Now!!" Gildevart shouts. His roar made the whole battlefield to halt their movement for a second because of its terrifying volume. "It’s time to-"
But then, a distant sound reached their ears – the unmistakable blare of a horn.
Lyan’s eyes widened in recognition. "That horn... It’s the Astellia Kingdom!"
The defenders’ spirits soared as they saw a column of soldiers approaching from the horizon. The royal knights of Astellia, led by Captain Julius, marched in perfect formation. Alongside him was Arnold, the commander of the army, and six thousand soldiers, including mercenaries. The sight of the Astellian forces brought a renewed sense of hope to the defenders.
"Finally," Lyan muttered, a fierce smile spreading across his face. He raised his glaive high. "Everyone, prepare for the final push! We finish this battle now!"
