Chapter 69: Of Serpents and Shattered Glass
Kevin surveyed the horrific scene before him, the sight igniting this fury in him. Rows of cylindrical containment tubes lined the laboratory walls, each one housing a human subject suspended in murky fluid, their bodies connected to a web of invasive monitoring equipment.
A scientist in a white coat attempted to slip past him in the chaos, but Kevin’s reflexes were pretty quick as he immediately grabbed the man by the collar, his grip firm enough to lift the trembling researcher off his feet. "How do we get those people out of there?" Kevin demanded while gesturing toward the test subjects within the tubes with his free hand, his voice carrying a menacing edge that made the scientist’s knees buckle.
The man’s glasses nearly slipped from his nose as he frantically pointed upward with a shaking finger. "T-there, u-up there," he stammered.
Kevin’s eyes followed the scientist’s gesture to an enclosed platform suspended above the laboratory floor. This was the observation deck overlooking the main chambers.
His disgust deepened as he realized the scope of human participation in these atrocities. "You humans who joined in these experiments are far worse than the demigods themselves," Kevin spat, releasing his grip with such force that the man stumbled backward.
The scientist scrambled to his feet and fled toward the nearest exit, his footsteps echoing frantically against the floor.
"I’ll handle it," Amira said, stepping forward as she made her way to the metal staircase leading to the observation deck. Once inside the control room, Amira found herself facing a bewildering array of equipment. Multiple keyboards sat before banks of monitoring screens, their surfaces covered with countless buttons and switches interconnected by a maze of cables.
She moved cautiously along the control panel, her eyes scanning for anything that might indicate the release mechanism or open-up buttons for the containment tubes.
Through the transparent windows of the observation deck, she could see Kevin watching her expectantly from below, and when their eyes met, she could only offer him a helpless shrug as the complexity of the system was beyond her immediate understanding.
Kevin shook his head with an exasperated sigh. Why did he bother in the first place? Sometimes the direct approach was the only viable option. Drawing his double-edged sword, Kevin channeled his magical energy through the blade and without hesitation, he struck one of the containment tubes with this precise force, in an attempt to not harm the victim inside.
The reinforced glass spider-webbed from the point of impact, with the cracks spreading rapidly until the entire structure burst open, causing the strange fluid to cascade across the laboratory floor as Kevin rushed forward to catch the unconscious woman who had been trapped inside.
The victim was barely conscious but still breathing, and Kevin began carefully removing the monitoring wires and tubes that had been inserted into her body, his movements gentle despite the urgency of the situation.
Recognizing that this methodical approach would take far too long, Amira abandoned the control room and rushed down to assist him.

Meanwhile, high above the laboratory complex, the battle between the President of the White Hunters, and Zebelon Quillforte, had also ensued in earnest and in midair.
For several minutes, Nacht had been engaged in what appeared to be evasive maneuvers, darting through the air to avoid the devastating attacks launched by his opponent. Zebelon’s assault came in two distinct forms: emerald lightning bolts that crackled with deadly energy, and a massive serpent composed entirely of flame that pursued their target.
"Is this all you intend to do, son of Nyron’s whore?" Zebelon taunted, spreading his arms wide in a gesture of mock disappointment.
Where Helda’s abilities drew upon mythical creatures from legends and stories, her brother Zebelon possessed the power to manifest spells and enchantments from the same sources. Unlike his sister, however, he required no physical books to channel these abilities.
Nacht had been deliberately studying his opponent’s attack patterns, analyzing the mechanics of Zebelon’s powers, and trying to understand it before committing to direct engagement. However, the time for observation had passed.
Ceasing his evasive flight, Nacht hovered motionless in the air as another flaming serpent rushed toward him. At the last possible moment, when the construct of flames was mere inches from impact, Nacht activated his own special skill, and in an instant, he swapped positions with Zebelon.
The Quillforte found himself directly in the path of his own spell and with no time to react or defend, the flame serpent struck its creator with devastating force, triggering a massive explosion that illuminated the sky.
Nacht observed the blast with an expressionless face as he knew that such an attack would not be sufficient to defeat his adversary. His suspicions proved correct as the flames dispersed, revealing Zebelon with his clothing singed and torn, burns covering his arms and torso.
Before Nacht’s eyes, the injuries began to heal, with the damage sustained clearing completely within moments. This was apparently a spell for healing gotten from one story or the other.
"To be sincerely honest," Zebelon said with a devious smirk on his face, "that was an excellent reminder of your family’s capabilities." His grin widened as he spoke, showing no sign of concern despite having been caught in his own attack.
Nacht’s ability—Lord of the Area, granted him control over three specific aspects of space within a designated region. Position swapping was merely one part of this skill, which generally stemmed from the Nyron family’s mastery of space-time manipulation.
Zebelon’s vast knowledge had allowed him to immediately understand the nature of Nacht’s technique. As a Quillforte such comprehension came almost naturally to him.
"Prepare yourself, mongrel!" Nacht declared, as his face contorted with rage.
Zebelon himself was already in anticipation of the next line of assault as he stretched both of his arms again to the side, an open invitation for Nacht to come.
Instantly, Nacht vanished from sight, teleporting instantly at Zebelon’s side with his katana already in motion. The blade cut through the air in a perfect horizontal arc, aimed at separating the Quillforte’s head from his shoulders.
But Zebelon’s reflexes matched his opponent’s speed, and just as the katana approached its target, a tremendous gust of wind erupted outward from Zebelon’s position, sending both Nacht and his weapon tumbling through the air. This was a spell he derived from William Shakespare’s— The Tempest.
However, Nacht braced himself as he was blown backward, clicking his tongue in frustration, ’Tsk’. The wind burst hadn’t caused significant damage, but it had effectively prevented him from landing a killing blow. Well, this Quillforte wasn’t Rank No.5240 for nothing.
With theatrical flair, Zebelon began to recite a verse, basically an excerpt from the same book the wind spell came from:
"I have bedimm’d
The noontide sun, call’d forth the mutinous winds,
And ’twixt the green sea and the azur’d vault
Set roaring war."
He concluded his recitation with an elaborate bow, as though performing before an audience. The gesture was both mocking and magnificent, a perfect display of the Quillforte’s arrogant confidence.
