Chapter 59: Expert Rank
.
The examiner’s sudden outburst caught everyone off guard.
Some of the participants, completely absorbed in their work, were startled for a moment and nearly made mistakes while inscribing.
Their expressions turned grim and confused as they all turned to look at the old man, who didn’t care in the slightest about the small commotion his reaction had caused and continued examining the paper talisman from top to bottom.
’No, this shouldn’t be possible,’ he kept muttering as he carefully checked over the runic formation inscribed on the slip of paper again and again.
Aside from the elegance and precision of each stroke, what left him even more stunned was that this runic inscription wasn’t grade 2 of the Mortal rank, nor grade 3,
it had already stepped into the Spirit rank.
That alone threw him off.
Just moments earlier, he’d been thinking about how, with such a poor material choice, that participant could only manage to make the lowest grade of talisman.
And yet here he was, holding a paper talisman with a formation already at grade 1of Spirit rank .
It was shocking, to say the least.
That alone would classify the examinee as a basic level Expert rank engraver, a record in itself for this level of test.
But that wasn’t even the problem.
The problem was that this was the bare minimum he could give for what had been created.
If this formation activated properly, the grade could only go higher.
Technically, a formation of this level shouldn’t have been able to function on such a poor base material, but the more he examined it, the less he could say for sure it wouldn’t work.
Just by looking, he could already tell a lot about the formation, and from what he saw, the strain it would place on its inscription base wouldn’t be too much.
In other words, this formation, already at Spirit rank, could theoretically function on this simple slip of paper.
In what world was something like this possible?
Even he had never heard of such a thing.
He realized there was no point wasting time trying to figure out whether it was possible or not and looked up at the examinee, who was watching him with a calm expression, as if the thing he’d just handed over was nothing special.
"Kid, where did you learn this formation?" he asked, not believing this participant could have created something like this on their own.
There had to be someone behind them.
’Maybe some Master engraver discovered a way to lower the strain placed on the base of a runic formation?’ he thought as a flood of theories rushed through his mind.
If that was the case, then whoever that master was, they had all the qualifications to reach Grandmaster Rank.
Yes, a Grandmaster,
a title renowned far and wide across all three empires.
Very few across the entire continent had reached that level in their profession.
And wherever they went, they’d be treated with the same respect as an emperor of a kingdom.
In fact, even an emperor would have to give them face.
The Master Pavilion had four Grandmasters, including the Pavilion Head, and they were the main Grandmasters of the Tianguo Empire.
The other empires had their own Grandmasters, but their numbers were lower than Tianguo’s.
And this was one of the main reasons the Human Empire hadn’t lost to the other empires yet.
And now, was it possible a new one might be born?
The fifth Grandmaster?
Just the thought made him tremble, and it was no wonder he looked so shaken.
Zhu Rong could more or less guess the spiral of thoughts racing through the old man’s mind and internally could only smirk and shake his head.
’Better if I don’t say I’m the one who came up with this method... or he might actually lose his mind.’
He finally spoke, giving the answer the man wanted to hear.
"It’s a formation my master taught me.
Is there something wrong with it?" he said, giving him exactly what he expected.
Hearing those words, the old examiner calmed down a little and nodded to himself.
’I knew it. Now, who could that master be?’ he wondered, unable to figure out who this mysterious person might be.
He could count the number of master engravers in the Human Empire on his hands,
and as far as he knew, none of them had achieved something like this.
"Ha ha ha.
No, no, there’s nothing wrong with the talisman. if I may, who is your master? Maybe it’s someone I know." he asked with a laugh.
Zhu Rong had expected this question and didn’t hesitate to reply.
"I’ll have to apologize. My master forbade me from disclosing any information about him. He prefers to live in peace and work alone.
" he doesn’t like being disturbed, so I don’t think I can say anything more about him," he replied, like a recorder spitting out pre prepared lines.
As much as he enjoyed showing off in front of others with his skills, Zhu Rong knew there was a right time for everything, and this wasn’t one of them.
So, he put on the face of a loyal, filial disciple who’d guard his master’s secret at all costs.
Seeing this, the old examiner’s expression softened, and he nodded internally before saying:
"If your master wishes to avoid disturbance, so be it. But when you see him next, tell him our Pavilion will always welcome him with open arms, " he said, and then continued
"I won’t lie to you, even though you learned this formation from your master, the fact that you could understand it and inscribe it onto paper with such precision and care speaks volumes about your ability.
That alone qualifies you for the basic stage of the Expert rank.
But that’s not all, If this formation activates properly without any issues, your rank might directly rise to advanced stage Expert rank," he said, struggling a little to get those words out.
And who could blame him?
This kid, who seemingly wasn’t even twenty years old, had reached such a level already.
He was basically right behind him, a mid stage Master Engraver!
’I can at least see why a Master engraver like that would choose him.
This kid’s talent is way too monstrous,’ the old man thought with a cold shiver.
He too would have fought tooth and nail to get his hands on a prodigy like this,
if not for the fact that this boy was already the disciple of someone likely at Grandmaster level.
And no one in their right mind would dare poach a disciple from someone like that.
Needless to say, the words spoken by the examiner left the other candidates shocked.
This time, the shock was so great that, two of them ruined their talismans, destroying all their work up to now.
But they didn’t even care, they were too stunned by what they’d just heard.
Even the poor guy who had shattered his jade tablet earlier wore a similar expression.
’Holy sht... an Expert rank? And possibly an advanced Expert rank?
Am I hallucinating or what?
Yeah... this can’t be real.
I must still be dreaming, first the jade tablet, and now this.
There’s no way this is actually happening... right?’
