Chapter 803: Chapter 803: The ’Source’ of the Wooden Token (Long Chapter for Monthly Pass)

Two minutes ago

A flying small drone passed through the tightly-closed car window and fell into the driver’s seat of the sedan. Lena quickly retracted the drone and tossed it onto the passenger seat.

Then she looked up at the rearview mirror, where not far behind her car, a man dressed in plain clothes and holding a walkie-talkie emerged from a corner and stood at a somewhat dilapidated intersection, looking around as if in search of something.

On his chest, a pendant that emitted a faint golden glow could be seen hanging.

Lena leaned back in the driver’s seat, looking at the wristband time again, her chest rising and falling.

The plainclothes man in the rearview mirror had already turned around and was cautiously and slowly walking towards them.

Lena’s hands tightly grasped the steering wheel, and she turned her head to glance down the deep alley.

The bright lights illuminated the dark alley, revealing a deep-colored off-road vehicle that was obviously heavily modified and covered with thick armor plates, slowly driving out from the end of the alley.

When the off-road vehicle was about twenty meters from the alleyway, it stopped.

Immediately afterward, a muscular, bald man with bandages wrapped around his arms jumped down from the driver’s side of the off-road vehicle and pulled out a flashlight, shining it out from the depths of the alley.

The bright glow of the flashlight glanced over the exposed front of the dark sedan and also faintly shone past the tightly-closed passenger window.

In the next second, Lena, seated in the car, gripped the steering wheel tightly and then stomped on the accelerator.

The originally silent sedan, as if propelled by a massive force, shot out from the darkness like a catapult.

"Chase that car!"

The bald man immediately ran back, jumping into the off-road vehicle and bellowing loudly.

The bright lights charged out of the pitch-black corridor, but just as they burst forth, a ’pang—’ sound was heard.

A blurry figure was hit by the off-road vehicle and flung into the air, flying over the old street and crashing into a building on the other side of the street.

"What the hell is that?"

The bald man, hanging outside the off-road vehicle, looked at the figure tumbling down from the wall and without hesitation, shouted, "Forget him, keep chasing that sedan."

"You filthy unbeliever, do you wish to die?"

Just then, the hit figure staggered to his feet, roared, and like a gust of wind, rushed out and punched towards the bald man.

"Dumbass."

The bald man rolled his eyes and raised his fist, with a whooshing wind, smashed his fist into the figure’s chest.

In that instant, golden light instantly covered the figure’s chest, blocking the punch.

The figure was sent flying again.

This time, he seemed to finally come to his senses. He glanced at the bald man, realized something, and immediately took up the walkie-talkie hanging on his chest, "Heretic detected! Immediate support requested! Heretic detected..."

He had only come to chase a suspicious drone, but unexpectedly found an even bigger catch here. Photos of every wanted heretic were sent directly to their wristbands.

But he didn’t finish speaking, as an icy sword light approached rapidly.

Golden light once again covered his entire body, forming a simple armor, but the attacking figure’s body was also instantly covered with intricate patterns.

Sharp knife light effortlessly sliced through the golden armor, and with blood spattering onto the wall, the figure on the walkie-talkie instantaneously split into two halves.

"Hey, are you still there? Respond if you hear me! Respond if you hear me!"

Voices from the walkie-talkie came through, muffled.

Bang—

The hard-soled boots crushed the pristine walkie-talkie to pieces, the bald man whipping off the torn bandages and sheathing his large knife, "Damn, trouble now, this Lena’s got something."

He took a leaping step back onto the off-road vehicle, looked at the driver, "Chase her, call all the brothers who are lying in ambush around here, she won’t get far, we need to find her before those heretics do."

Shortly after the off-road vehicle took off, several people in white robes quickly rushed out from behind the crossroads and stopped in front of the entity that had been split in two.

The leader in white robes glanced at the fresh blood running along the broken street, then at the two new tire tracks, picked up the walkie-talkie, and rapidly said,

"Heretics located, they are fleeing towards the northwest, appears to be in pursuit of something, suspect presence of a dangerous C-level among the heretics, request backup."

Bright lights spilled into the quiet living room.

The elderly standing at the doorway seemed to hear the distant commotion, he lifted his head, glanced in the direction of the living room windows, and strolled leisurely toward the sofa, taking a seat opposite He Ao and looking at the hot coffee in front of him with a mild smile,

"It seems that those ’companions’ from the Church who might have been able to help me have been discovered by the followers of the Esoteric Teachings? Am I now in an ’isolated’ state?"

"It just creates some peaceful time for our conversation, doesn’t it?"

He Ao opened a small white ceramic jar with a plastic clip on the coffee table, revealing the sparkling sugar cubes inside, "Need some sugar?"

"Then, thanks for the hospitality,"

The elderly reached out, used the tongs to grab three sugar cubes, dropped them into his coffee, then picked up the ceramic spoon beside his coffee cup and stirred slowly,

"When I was young, I enjoyed bitter coffee, thinking that life is always bitter; as I grew older, I started wanting something sweet. Old age, my friends one by one passing away, has made me realize that even the things I thought were bitter in life, actually have their sweetness."

He picked up his coffee and took a gentle sip,

"If the person in charge of the Esoteric Teachings here is smart, after seeing the power I just displayed, they would likely focus on my Church companions outside, while only sending someone to monitor me here, waiting for reinforcements from their Esoteric Teachings headquarters.

"Conducting a two-front war, watching the strong but not acting rashly, striking at the weak for easy victories, can effectively maximize their own interests.

"And if so, there should be no one from the Esoteric Teachings in this building right now, indeed it’s much quieter, and you only have to deal with me alone.

"Originally, I wanted to choose this place so I could manage the search of the house and meet the young lady mercenary at the same time,

"My conspicuous entrance would also help draw attention away from my Church companions.

"But now, it seems this has instead put me in a passive position."

The elderly put down his coffee cup on the table, smiling gently at He Ao who was slowly taking out sugar cubes from the jar, "Kid, the coffee’s good, and the ruse isn’t bad either."

"However,"

His tone paused for a moment, he asked in a low voice, "You seem quite confident you can handle this troublesome old man?"

"Not that confident,"

He Ao calmly picked up his spoon to stir his coffee, his tone composed as if chatting with an old friend of many years, "But after all, man shapes his own destiny."

"The saying ’Where there’s a will, there’s a way’ isn’t bad,"

the Elderly carefully assessed the young boy in front of him, "I haven’t met a child as clever and bold as you in a long time. Would you be interested in joining us? Maybe in a hundred years, this position could be yours."

"Usually, I’m not interested in worshipping any Divine Being,"

He Ao lifted his coffee cup to his lips, "It tends to affect relationships between friends."

"You still have friends who are staunchly against worshipping a Divine Being?"

The Elderly shook his head in disappointment, "It seems that he doesn’t quite understand the greatness of the Divine Being."

"Perhaps, I also don’t know whether my friends understand the greatness of the Divine Being,"

He Ao gently sipped his coffee.

The sugar was a bit scant, resulting in a bitter taste.

He hadn’t added milk; the pure coffee had a slightly astringent bite to it.

"Speaking of which, I’ve been pondering since just now,"

the Elderly reached out, picked up another sugar cube, and dropped it into his cup, "So how did you know I am the Church Leader? Through that mercenary young lady? But I think I didn’t give more information to that mercenary young lady."

"Oh,"

He Ao cradled the warm cup of coffee, replying gently.

The jacket was somewhat oversized, his slender fingers wrapped around the cup, his palms hidden within the sleeves. He looked at the face of the Elderly, clearly showing curiosity, and after a brief pause, he calmly said, "I guessed."

The Elderly’s expression stiffened.

In fact, He Ao’s reasoning process was not complex.

The ’client’ who assigned Lena the task seemed to have a large association with the Eternal Ancient Teachings, but last night, the Transcendent of the Eternal Ancient Teachings who entered the Inner Church evidently didn’t recognize Lena.

A Transcendent who could enter the Inner Church with such a powerful Extraordinary Item like Corona of Radiance and also manifest B-level strength, could not possibly hold a low position in the Eternal Ancient Teachings; they were very likely the top-tier individual on the Wint City side.

And they were unaware that someone had individually ’hired’ Lena, and Lena’s task description also didn’t include cooperating with their actions.

This proved that Lena’s ’client’ was very likely to be someone of equal or even higher rank than them, at least a B-level powerhouse who could assign tasks bypassing them.

Returning to the essence of Lena’s task, the ’client’ arranged for her to ’retrieve’ Yiluo’s parents’ remains, but gave her an almost certainly fatal Prop Disc that was impossible to complete — this seemed somewhat illogical.

But if you think about it differently, what if the ’client’ hoped Lena’s ’mission’ wasn’t to ’bring back the remains’?

From the start, the ’client’ never expected Lena to return alive; his purpose was always to have Lena activate the disc and then turn into a monster tainted by the Eternal Radiance.

Given the disc’s affinity with the Corona of Radiance, it was very likely that after Lena became a monster, she would be attracted to the vicinity of the ’Corona of Radiance’.

Once the disc was completely activated, it would most likely possess some kind of locating or ’attraction’ effect, taking ’Lena’ to the correct ’destination’.

Hence ’Lena’ herself was not the ’safeguard’ for retrieving the remains, but rather, in the event of an accident, a ’fallback’ to ’recapture’ the Corona of Radiance.

Usually, a peer wouldn’t go behind a colleague of the same rank to prepare such a ’fallback’ unless they received commands from a higher level, or they themselves were from a higher level.

And most of the time, when such falls-backs are made without the knowledge of key mission personnel, it’s generally because someone within the key personnel is no longer trustworthy.

Inferring from Lockway’s situation in the Eternal Secret Teachings back to the state of the Eternal Ancient Teachings, since the Ancient Teachings could plant spies in the Esoteric Teachings, the Esoteric Teachings could also implant infiltrators within the Ancient Teachings.

Since the mission last night had proceeded normally, it meant that the spy within the Ancient Teachings hadn’t yet been identified, but had definitely slipped up, with a high probability of being a peer of last night’s B-level "glasses man."

Therefore, all the B-level powers who were on the same level as the glasses man should be suspected.

And the matter of setting up a contingency plan would not be entrusted to them to carry out, so it’s very likely that Lena, the "contingency," was directly arranged by someone higher up than the glasses man.

And the only person higher up than the glasses man in the Ancient Teachings was their "Leader."

Of course, these were all He Ao’s speculations, only confirmed after seeing the Elderly appear at the doorway, directly bluffing the Elderly and then finding out the truth.

So, he also admitted outright that he was guessing.

The startled Elderly took a while to come to his senses, staring at He Ao and finding that He Ao did not seem to be lying.

At that moment, he suddenly realized that he had just been bluffed by this young man.

He had just seen the young man speaking oathfully with such composure and had thought that the young man truly had some secret information.

"You’re a clever young man,"

he sighed, stirring his coffee, and said with a sigh, "I want you to join us even more now."

Immediately after, he looked at He Ao with interest and asked, "So how did you know I would come here today? Another guess?"

"Not entirely,"

He Ao turned to glance at the window behind him,

"Standing by the window of this room, one has a perfect view of your chosen ’deal location,’ right? All it took was one look at a holographic projection to know everything,

"You chose that spot, wasn’t it because you wanted to monitor the deal and be ready to rush over immediately if something went wrong?

"Moreover,"

He Ao turned back to look at the Elderly,

"That wooden token is important to you, isn’t it? You don’t trust your so-called ’Church companions,’ so you chose this spot, wanting to come here yourself to see if the wooden token might ’go missing’ in this room."

His gaze calmly fixed on the Elderly before him, fixed on the Wilderness Wanderer outfit, fixed on the fervor in the depths of his eyes shining with orange radiance,

"Now, I am sitting in front of you. Is your eagerness to draw me into the Church the same as when you sold the wooden token to my father in the wilderness?"

His voice was even and slow, "What you desire is not ’Talent’ that can help you revive the Church, but rather ’pawns’ that can help you achieve your goals."

"Child, both your sharpness and intelligence surprise me,"

the Elderly lowered his head, blowing the steam off the coffee cup,

"Honestly, I did not expect you to ’align’ so perfectly with the Secret Watcher Talent Sequences, to survive after experiencing the crude inheritance of the ancient Wizards. If you had been born in the era of the great disaster, you might have become one of the top Wizards."

He brought the coffee cup to his lips and sipped slowly, "But sometimes, it’s good to be a bit foolish; at least, the foolish remain happy until death."

"So what do you want to do with this ’Secret Watcher’ Talent Sequences?"

He Ao, cupping his coffee, fixed his gaze on the Elderly’s light brown pupils covered in orange radiance, "Or rather, what are you looking for with the ’Truth Monster’ that formed due to the failure to merge with the Secret Watcher Talent Sequences and is extremely sensitive to Truth?"

The Elderly slowly finished his coffee and then placed the empty cup on the table. Looking at He Ao, he smiled and asked,

"Do you know about the Eternal Divine Nation?"
