Chapter 798: Chapter 798: Turning Death into Life (Extra Long Chapter for Monthly Votes)

The scattered moonlight spilled over the silent city. The immense mecha’s pure white jet of light at its back flickered for a moment before changing direction and descending slowly.

Finally, the mecha landed between rows of abandoned and dilapidated buildings, crouching down and placing its hands on the ground.

"Looks like we’ve arrived."

Gast glanced around and pulled the young agent beside him down from the mecha’s palm.

Then the mecha retracted its palm and stood up again. The light from its back sputtered somewhat unstably as it flew back into the sky.

"Hey, you’re still alive, huh?"

A slightly surprised voice came from the side.

In the immersive darkness of the night, a buxom redhead woman, with a slim lady’s cigarette dangling from her lips, slowly emerged from the dark street.

"Lena?"

Gast paused as he took in the woman before him.

"What, surprised?"

Lena smiled and walked towards Gast and his companion.

The young agent unconsciously tightened his grip on the submachine gun in his hand. He knew that although the Federal Bureau of Investigation was currently cooperating with the Security Union, their past relations had been strained with frequent local conflicts.

Gast reached out and pressed down on the submachine gun in the young agent’s hand, eyeing Lena who appeared mostly unharmed. He then turned to look in the direction where the mecha had disappeared. "Is this the hidden force you’ve kept secret?"

"Director Gast, you’re well aware of my rules."

Lena removed the cigarette from her mouth and flicked the ash with her finger.

"So this counts as intelligence, huh?"

Gast nodded, "How much do you want for it?"

"We’re allies now,"

Lena, with the cigarette still between her lips, watched as a black off-road vehicle pulled up behind her, "Consider this piece of news a freebie,"

She paused, looking at Gast with a playful glint in her eyes, "Do you think we look like we can afford a mecha?"

Gast’s gaze lingered thoughtfully for a moment.

Then he looked up at the black off-road vehicle, "What is this about?"

"Picked up a commission,"

Lena turned and opened the vehicle’s door, "to find you folks a safe house and get you an underground doctor."

She looked back at Gast, "Get in."

"Boss?"

The young agent turned to look at Gast.

"Let’s go,"

Gast walked straight ahead, "No one knows the Storm Zone better than Lena from the Withered Tree Bar."

——

The pure white mecha wobbled through the air to a deserted factory area. The light from its thrusters flickered, and then it lost balance, drifting down like a falling leaf, unsteady as it descended.

Beneath the mecha, on a rooftop in the silent night, a door slid open, parting in the middle like a sliding door to reveal a circular platform below.

The wobbling mecha eventually landed on the circular platform, placed its hands down, and shut off its thrusters.

The entire platform began to descend rapidly, sinking into the building with the mecha’s frame.

The doors to the rooftop closed again, and the quiet night resumed its former tranquility.

A steel platform extended from the edge of a floor in the building, carrying a blond girl with twin ponytails forward until it halted in front of the mecha’s chest.

Click—

The hatch on the mecha’s chest opened, releasing obscuring smoke.

The blond girl with twin ponytails frowned at this scene and charged straight into the cockpit.

Then she saw a young boy covered in blood, who had stepped away from the control panel, removing the controls from the brackets and slowly placing them on his wrists.

He lifted his head to see the twin ponytailed girl. Just as he was about to speak, his body lurched forward.

The girl immediately reached out to support the boy but felt an immense force weigh down on her arm. His tilting body then dragged her down with him.

With a thud, he collapsed onto her on the cockpit floor.

She reached out quickly to touch the boy’s carotid artery. Only after feeling a pulse did she take a long breath of relief.

Then she strained to lift her hand, wanting to push the boy off her, but even with all her strength, she could only move him a little.

In the end, she chose to give up and looked at the boy pressing down on her, "Are all you Transcendents this heavy? How am I supposed to take you for treatment like this..."

Her gaze paused abruptly and settled on the boy’s bent arm.

The boy, before passing out, had deliberately bent his arm forward, supporting part of the weight.

Otherwise, she might have been crushed the moment he collapsed.

"You little brat,"

She turned her head away and slightly shifted the boy’s body, changing his position, placing his head on her soft thigh, and then she lay there on the ground, raising her hands,

"Doctor, please come here immediately, bring all the medical equipment,"

Then she looked at the boy’s blood-stained face and paused in her speech, "And get a hot towel."

——

A night passed

When the glow of dawn shone on the silent streets, the clamor of gunfire seemed to have finally come to a halt.

People got up and washed up for their daily routines, tiredly boarded vehicles of the United Industries public transportation system.

Tents on the sidewalk unzipped, and some people dressed in thin clothes emerged from tents still surrounded by snow, holding half a piece of bread, yawning and squeezing onto the bus platform.

The spots near the bus platforms were desirable, where one could sleep in a bit longer in the morning.

These locations were typically beyond the choice of the homeless, controlled by gangs and security companies. To set up a tent nearby, one had to pay an extra ’spot fee’ to the gang or the security company.

If the place where the tent was set up belonged to United Industries, then the ’spot fee’ was paid to United Industries.

Of course, this was more common in Aka District, where seven-tenths of the public facilities were sold to United Industries, including parks and roads.

In Storm Zone, that number was less than one-tenth.

There were many reasons for this difference, with the decrepit state of public facilities in Storm Zone being one of them.

Another more significant reason was the obstruction from the Security Union, an entrenched power in Storm Zone.

Lena shifted her gaze from the tents on the sidewalk and looked ahead.

Obviously, soon all the public utilities in Storm Zone would become the property of United Industries.

She had already received messages from her former ’comrades’.

After losing the support of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Security Union was clearly no match for the alliance between United Industries and the Eternal Secret Teachings.

Ultimately many of the peripheral members of the Security Union chose to directly surrender to United Industries, gaining the company’s protection.

The Security Union was never a solid entity, so defection in such circumstances was quite normal.

However, most of the core ’leaders’ of the former Security Union banded together. Now they dispersed their followers to hide in the Storm Zone, continuing the fight against the forces of the Eternal Secret Teachings and United Industries.

Of course, it wasn’t that they hadn’t thought of surrendering.

Rather, the reality was that now everyone understood United Industries and the Eternal Secret Teachings wanted a Storm Zone completely under their control.

Under these circumstances, the still-living, prestigious leaders who could muster a significant force were major impediments.

So these core leaders had to die.

Even if they surrendered, death was the inevitable outcome.

Of course, considering the vast disparity in strength, it was certain that more and more people wouldn’t withstand the siege from United Industries and the Eternal Secret Teachings and would surrender with unrealistic ’hopes’.

The SUV’s wheels rolled smoothly over the calm road. Upon approaching a blockade, the vehicle turned a corner and entered a small alley.

Lena glanced at the iron thorn barricade in the rearview mirror that had sealed off the street.

The road that extended behind the blockade led to the Eternal Secret Teachings’ cathedral that was destroyed last night.

In the end, the battle over the cathedral ruins seemed to have been won by those of the Eternal Ancient Teachings against the followers of the Eternal Secret Teachings.

However, the small-scale victory of the Eternal Ancient Teachings could not change the overall outcome.

From the current intelligence, last night it appeared that United Industries was responsible for dealing with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Security Union, and the support for the cathedral.

Meanwhile, the Eternal Secret Teachings gathered all their forces to confront the power of the Eternal Ancient Teachings.

Naturally, the Ancient Teachings were not completely helpless, and intense fighting broke out between the two factions, both believers of the Eternal Radiance.

While Lena hadn’t received specific battle reports between the two Teachings, conclusions from her informants indicated that the Ancient Teachings probably lost, with most of their strongholds destroyed.

Of course, the victory of the Eternal Secret Teachings was not perfect either; they paid a heavy price, and the cathedral was also gone.

In fact, it was clear that this was a ’trap’ set by United Industries and the Eternal Secret Teachings, who had prepared extensively for an invincible array, asserting absolute advantage in every segment of the battlefield.

If the "trap" at the cathedral last night had been successful and that B-level Bishop with terrifying combat power could have returned to the battlefield, the Ancient Teachings would likely have been getting pressed hard.

But because the Bishop couldn’t return, the cathedral collapsed, the Esoteric Teachings’ forces at the cathedral were defeated by the Ancient Teachings, leading to the main battlefield forces of the Esoteric Teachings losing the strong reinforcements they should have had.

This, in turn, caused the Eternal Secret Teachings to expend far more than anticipated to eradicate the forces of the Ancient Teachings.

At the same time, due to the fall of the Sky Behemoth, the power of United Industries was also weakened, allowing many employees from the Federal Bureau of Investigation to escape from that encirclement.

These factors combined meant that last night, both United Industries and the Eternal Secret Teachings couldn’t muster enough strength to deal with the Security Union, allowing the latter to retain their fighting force and continue to hinder the "United Industries-Eternal Secret Teachings Alliance" from controlling the Storm Zone.

And if we continue to look back, we can see that last night’s "free-for-all" was not in the original plan of the Eternal Secret Teachings and United Industries.

The premature and sudden chaos turned a meticulously crafted plan into one rife with oversights, also making United Industries’ hurried betrayal fail to achieve its intended effect.

Lena once seriously considered whether there was a chance to counterattack if United Industries and the Eternal Secret Teachings’ schemes had gone according to their original plan.

She thought for a long time and came to the conclusion that it was impossible.

Even if the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Eternal Ancient Teachings, and Security Union were tied together, even if the three forces could cooperate seamlessly, they would not be able to defeat the alliance of United Industries and the Eternal Secret Teachings, which possessed not just one powerful B-level Transcendent and a Sky Behemoth.

That was the reality.

It was an absolute deadlock.

United Industries and the Eternal Secret Teachings would completely control the city, she did not know what kind of future that would be, but she had a premonition that it would be a world even more desperate than the present, a despair that would not be limited to Wint City.

If history were to really proceed to that step, Lena felt she would have no other choice but to surrender or die.

The Eternal Secret Teachings would probably not even give her the chance to run away.

Of course, history did not ultimately take that direction.

The SUV stopped in front of a simple funeral home, Lena stretched out her hand, pushed open the car door, and stepped out of the SUV.

A girl with golden hair and twin ponytails draped in a white fur coat was standing inside the glass door of the funeral home, holding a cup of milk tea, seemingly waiting for her.

The girl in front of her had fair skin, looked delicate and attractive, and from her posture, it was quite obvious she had received professional etiquette training, most likely from the upper crust of a large consortium.

However, there were slight calluses on the insides of her fingers that did not match her identity—perhaps she even had mecha piloting experience.

A young lady, a mecha pilot—was it due to a hobby, or some special status?

At the first moment of meeting, Lena had roughly sorted through her observations.

When the twin-ponytailed girl saw Lena, she also froze for a moment, then subconsciously looked down at her toes.

But the girl quickly looked up again, reached out to open the glass door, and looked at Lena, asking in a low voice, "Lena?"

"Hmm."

Lena nodded lightly and helped push open the glass door, walking into the funeral home.

Actually, she had already been here once yesterday, helping Yiluo bring his parents here.

"Vili."

The golden-haired twin ponytail girl reached out her hand, introducing herself.

"Lena, Bounty Hunter."

Lena extended her hand and shook hands with Vili gently, reintroducing herself.

"I know,"

Vili nodded lightly, "Yiluo mentioned you in the last email he sent to me, he said that he had made plans with you in an email last night to meet here today,"

She took the kettle from the side, picked up an empty cup, and poured a cup of milk tea, "Would you like some milk tea?"

"Thank you."

Lena took the milk tea, then said with some confusion, "Where is Yiluo? Hasn’t he arrived yet?"

"He..."

Vili’s voice paused for a moment, holding the milk tea and heading towards the depths of the funeral home, "Come with me."

After the two pushed open a small door, a pure white bed appeared before their eyes.

A somewhat thin, pale-skinned young boy was lying on the bed, a white medicine bag hung next to the bed, connected to a pure white IV tube, and the medical IV clamp at the end of the tube was clamped onto his wrist.

"What’s going on with him?"

Lena unconsciously tightened her grip on her coffee cup.

"He’s stable now, last night I almost thought he was going to die,"

Vili also held her coffee cup, speaking softly, "But the doctor said his body is very, very weak for some reason, possibly too exhausted, and he will probably need to rest for a while before he can wake up."

Lena glanced at the stool beside her, sat down next to the boy, and watched the young lad’s frail cheek.

She hadn’t only started hearing the name ’Yiluo’ recently; Novis used to mention how adorable his young son was during casual conversations at meetings.

She had also seen photos of Yiluo before. At that time, Yiluo had a round and cute face, looking very likable at first glance.

But all that had abruptly come to an end on the day that ’Yiluo’ had his accident.

Since then, she hadn’t heard Novis mention his younger son again.

However, whenever someone from the Security Union asked Novis about ’your son’, Novis would always counter with ’which one’ and seriously stress that he had two children, both alive.

Speaking of which, the ’Nutrient Pod’ for Yiluo was also ’purchased’ through Novis from Vitland.

She didn’t know when ’Yiluo’ had awakened, but she knew that when Yiluo did wake up, it probably wasn’t at a ’good time’.

Most likely, only the most despairing experiences could wake a child who was already half-stepped into hell.

Her knowledge of mystical studies was limited, but she was very clear that the world operated on the principle of equivalent exchange.

To bestow great power upon an ordinary person, a price beyond the comprehension of mortals must have been paid.

"Did you know him for a long time?"

Vili also grabbed a stool and sat next to Lena.

"I used to know his parents; his father is a member of the Security Union and has considerable prestige there,"

Lena turned to look at Vili, "So how did you come to know him?"

"Because of an ’accident’."

Vili hesitated for a moment before recounting briefly how she had encountered ’Yiluo’.

"So you are with the Twilight Society?"

Lena looked curiously at Vili.

She knew of the Twilight Society, knew that it had always been resisting the Eternal Secret Teachings, and even the Society had purchased information from her before.

However, she had not expected the Twilight Society to have that many ’Mechas’.

"Yes."

Vili nodded.

"So it all started with the ’Twilight Society’..."

Lena mused.

"What do you mean?"

Vili was somewhat puzzled.

"Well,"

After a brief consideration, Lena directed her gaze at the blond ’young lady’ before her and summed up her previous analysis simply,

"I had been wondering what the original plan of the Eternal Secret Teachings and United Industries was, and now, it seems their initial strategy was to ’divide and conquer’.

"First, to deal with the ’Twilight Society’, which has the deepest conflict with them and also possesses Mecha warfare capabilities, then to merge and absorb the weakest yet most troublesome Security Union, and finally, to confront the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Eternal Ancient Teachings head-on to complete control over the entire city."

"In the end, they resolved none,"

Vili pondered aloud, "and even due to the first link going wrong, it led to a chain of errors in the others,

"Failing to resolve our ’Twilight Society’ ultimately resulted in having Mechas able to participate in the fight against the Sky Behemoth.

"Being unable to assimilate the Security Union successfully, has now turned the Security Union completely against them and has shaken their stable control over the Storm Zone.

"However, the biggest variable is still..."

She turned her head to look at the young boy lying on the bed.

If it hadn’t been for this young boy, she would have died in the snowy plains a few days ago, and the Twilight Society would have been completely destroyed.

All the subsequent events would have been mere speculation.

"Indeed."

Lena also turned to look at the boy on the bed.

While United Industries and the Eternal Secret Teachings were attempting to drive history’s chariot towards their preplanned destination, a little hand reached out to pull the tight reins, steering the chariot in a completely different direction.

Though United Industries and the Eternal Secret Teachings still held an advantage, it was no longer as formidable.

The chess game laid out across the city had shifted from a dead end to a live play.

Sunlight streamed through the window of the inner room, casting its rays upon the young boy’s cheeks, and on those slender shoulders, in the hazy light, the silhouette of an illusive butterfly was slowly unfurling its wings.

Those tightly closed eyes, trembled slightly.
