Chapter 795: Gast (Looking for Monthly Passes)
Chapter 795: Chapter 795: Gast (Looking for Monthly Passes)
"Director!"
The young agent drove the racing SUV, swerving violently through dim alleys, speeding along the bumpy road.
Behind the SUV trailed a towering black Hell Apostle Mech.
At this moment, the mech, like an eagle with broken wings, swayed uncontrollably in the air. Atop the mech, a man in black wielding a huge metal chain hammer stood on its back, swinging the hammer and continuously striking the mech’s joints.
The wind howled past the man’s side face in the night, as the damaged mech shook violently on its descent.
The struggling mech tried to activate its anti-aircraft guns to attack the man, but in the next second, the man’s chain hammer struck the barrel, exploding it into several pieces of steel in the darkness.
With each strike of the chain hammer, the mech’s control further diminished.
Eventually, the mech’s pilot seized an opportunity, raised his Plasma Main Cannon, and turned his back to aim at the black-clad man standing above him.
However, it seemed the black-clad man had anticipated this move; he threw his chain hammer, its golden chains wrapping around the mech’s cannon barrel like a massive shackle, then the man leaped downward fiercely.
The taut chain pulled the flame-painted muzzle to aim at the mech’s own back.
Boom—
With a booming roar, the colossal mech exploded into a brilliant flame in the sky, while the black-clad man’s figure passed through the fire, his long chain hammer swinging through the flames as he fell.
Thud—
The black-clad man crashed onto the ground, then retracted his chain hammer and leapt onto the still-moving SUV ahead.
"Director!"
The young agent glanced at the black-clad man, whose clothes were mostly torn, body covered in glowing orange-hued blood, and excitedly gripped the steering wheel tighter, "You’re so cool!!!"
"Cool, right?"
Director Gast coughed, "Earned with my life,"
He looked back at the night sky where flames had not yet died out, "Two down, one more and we both die here."
"Ah?"
The young agent’s expression drooped.
"Has the signal been restored?"
Gast turned to look at the car’s screen and asked in a low voice.
"No, they’ve used some kind of signal jammer; the range is too wide."
The young agent shook his head.
"Must be military-grade,"
Gast frowned tightly, "And not just one."
He peered ahead, eyes scanning the battered road and the almost slum-like buildings, "Looks like we’re nearing the Storm Sea, they’re deliberately driving us towards the shore."
"Director, they’re pushing us into a corner!"
The young agent, amid the vehicle’s violent jolting, spoke somewhat indignantly, "United Industries colluding with the Cult, attacking us—aren’t they afraid of the Federal Central’s investigation? Have these people become so lawless already?"
"Naive kid,"
Gast lit a cigarette and placed it in his mouth, speaking somewhat silently, "It wasn’t United Industries that killed us."
"What?"
The young agent was momentarily stupified by the response, saying instinctively, "Even though they’ve jammed our signal now, Director, didn’t you come prepared? Just now, you sent out the distress signal; if we die here tonight, everyone will know it’s United Industries in cahoots with the Cult."
"How can you be so certain it was I who sent out those messages?"
Gast turned back with a smile.
"I clearly saw you send them..."
He stopped speaking abruptly, halfway through.
He realized what Gast meant.
If they died here tonight, no one would be able to prove that the distress signals were sent by Gast.
"After tonight, those messages could be claimed to be the work of the Eternal Secret Teachings having cracked my email using electronic technology to deliberately provoke a rift between United Industries and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
"Or it could be,"
Gast turned to look at the young agent, "if you’re lucky enough to survive tonight, then you might be the ’traitor’ who deceived my trust, and after my death, used my electronic devices to fabricate evidence. For instance,"
Gast glanced back at the young agent, "if you survive tonight by luck, you could become the ’mole’ who gained my trust and then, amid the fierce clash between United Industries and the Eternal Secret Teachings, be ’killed’ by United Industries."
As he listed possible scenarios, the young agent grew gradually quieter, his back stiffening as if he felt a bone-chilling cold.
In this era where videos could be fabricated through artificial intelligence, nothing was necessarily ’true’.
After tonight, United Industries and the Eternal Secret Teachings would have complete control over the city, and the ’truth’ was no longer so important.
"But, but,"
the young agent said in a subdued voice, "Back at headquarters, they are not fools..."
"Of course, the headquarters are not fools,"
Gast sighed,
"They will definitely send someone to investigate in Wint City, they might even figure out the truth,"
he said, putting a cigarette in his mouth, "but, kid, the Federal Bureau of Investigation is not a personified individual, but a collective made up of countless people. There are those who oppose United Industries, and naturally, there will be those who support it. Don’t forget who is behind United Industries."
"Rockville..."
the young agent subconsciously took up the thread, "That’s one of the top ten conglomerates in the Federation..."
"Their procedures might indeed be reasonable and by the book, but the same procedures can lead to completely different results in different people’s hands,"
Gast said with the cigarette between his lips, he stood up and patted the young agent’s shoulder, "When they took this step, the odds are that they were already prepared for what follows."
"So, they aren’t afraid of anything?"
the young agent peered at the uneven ground in front of him and said softly, "Are we all going to die here?"
"If they really weren’t afraid of anything, they wouldn’t keep blocking our signals,"
Gast smiled and continued to scrutinize the surroundings attentively.
The young agent was confused and then he immediately understood, "As long as we can prove that we are ’us,’ and that United Industries is indeed attacking us, they can obscure facts without clear evidence, but they cannot twist facts that have been proven.
"In reality, they are still afraid of the Federal Central. They are actually not as strong as they appear,"
he said thoughtfully and quickly, "Director, as long as we can escape and keep reporting the details, submit our identity information, and build a complete logical chain, United Industries will definitely face inquiries and investigations from the Federal Central, and they will pay a heavy price then!"
His voice faded as he spoke.
His initial talk about why United Industries wasn’t afraid of the headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Investigation was in the hope that the threat from the headquarters could make United Industries hesitate to kill them, allowing them to survive.
The result of the current analysis was that only if they survived, they could truly ’threaten’ United Industries, making them hesitate.
"So, we have to live."
Gast gently patted his shoulder, extinguished the cigarette in his hand, and flicked it into the darkness.
"Director, is there a problem?"
It was only then that the young agent noticed that Gast seemed to be constantly observing something.
"Nothing, it just feels too quiet."
Gast looked up at the sky, gripping the chain in his hand tightly.
The attacks from United Industries and the Eternal Secret Teachings had been relentless, but since he destroyed that Mecha, the attacks seemed to have quieted down.
And at that moment, a huge Shadow slowly emerged from the edge of his field of vision.
"How old are you this year?"
Gast looked down, lighting another cigarette.
"27, Director,"
the young agent still focused on the road ahead.
"Married yet?"
Gast sat back down in the co-pilot’s seat.
"Not yet,"
the young agent replied, "I met a girl online, we were hitting it off pretty well, and we were just about to meet up."
He sighed softly as he spoke.
"Stop the car."
Gast suddenly said.
The young agent stomped on the brake and then raised his head, looking at Gast confusedly.
"Turn around,"
Gast pushed open the co-pilot’s door and got out of the car, "Head back, floor it, and if you can make it out, find a place to ditch the car. If chaos breaks out later, just blend into the crowd and run. No matter what happens, don’t look back."
"What’s going on, Director?"
The young agent asked, looking at Gast with some confusion.
"Do as I say, this is an order."
Gast said with an icy expression.
"Yes!"
Although somewhat puzzled, the young agent followed Gast’s command and turned the car around.
Meanwhile, Gast retracted his chain hammer and stood still in the middle of the street, looking up at the sky.
A huge Shadow slowly passed over their heads, obscuring the stars, the skyscrapers, and the road.
"That is..."
The young agent looked up in shock at the massive Shadow stretching for hundreds of meters above, blocking out the sun, his mouth slowly falling open.
The last time he’d seen it was in a textbook.
This was something that should absolutely not be appearing in the city.
"B-class combat unit, Sky Behemoth,"
with a cigarette in his mouth, Gast calmly continued as he gazed up at the immense Shadow.
Then, he turned around and looked back at the young agent. The car had turned around and the driver’s seat was now beside him.
He reached out his hand to verify the vehicle’s authorization, then lifted the rear of the off-road vehicle with one hand while controlling the vehicle’s screen with the other, turning the ignition to its maximum.
In an instant, the rear wheels of the off-road vehicle began spinning rapidly, kicking up a fine wind.
"Run, kid!!"
Then, he released the off-road vehicle that he had lifted into the air, all while the young agent watched with a shocked expression.
Boom—
The off-road vehicle shot out like a cannonball.
Through the rearview mirror, the young agent watched the scene behind him.
Numerous small unmanned drones fell from a giant ship in the sky, like a cloud cover enveloping the black-clothed man standing in the middle of the street.
Little projectiles spitting flames poured down from the sky like heavy rain.
The pale golden metal chains, with their shuttle-shaped metal hammers, suddenly swung, breaking all the little projectiles with the howling wind they carried.
The blazing fires lit up the sky that had been covered in shadows.
"Gast, we can collaborate."
A cold, aged voice came from a drone above, "You know very well that you cannot resist a combat formation of Sky Behemoths. Whether you die or collaborate is up to you."
"Collaborate?"
Gast burst out from the raging flames, a still-burning cigarette butt clenched in his mouth. He looked up with a smile at the massive shadow overhead, "Do you want to cooperate with me, or with the director of the Wint City Federal Bureau of Investigation?"
"Of course, with you, the director of the Wint City Federal Bureau of Investigation."
The voice from the drone spoke down from above with tranquil authority.
"If it’s with me, actually, we might still have room for negotiation,"
Gast said with a smile.
The drones in the sky suddenly stalled for a moment.
"However, unfortunately, if it’s with the director of the Wint City Federal Bureau of Investigation, we probably don’t have any room to negotiate,"
he said calmly, holding the chain, "I don’t know what the guy who might sit in this chair in the future will think, but as long as I’m the director for even one day, the Wint City Federal Bureau of Investigation will absolutely never cooperate with cultists, or scoundrels who bring a Sky Behemoth into the city."
The swirling chain hammer instantly pierced the highest drone, and the man in black leaped toward the sky,
Golden chains colliding with the streaks of cannon fire and drones, blossoming into myriad bright explosions in the sky.
"Eradicate the Evil God’s Believers and the willful outlaws."
Gast calmly retracted the chain hammer, "That is my duty."
"Dull-witted fool."
A cold curse came from the drone, "Since that’s how it is, rest in peace in your grave."
Countless drones, like a swarm of bees, once again surged out from the sky, followed by a dense formation of Dragon Cavalry Fighters.
A multitude of gunfire and brilliance rained down on Gast from all directions.
Initially, he was able to fend off most of the shells with his chain hammer and even used it to leap onto a Dragon Cavalry and knock down one of the fighters.
But as the artillery became increasingly dense, along with the arrival of drones equipped with small laser cannons, he accumulated more and more wounds.
His black garb turned into tattered rags, bare flesh crisscrossed with dense scars, blood scattering in the air like raindrops.
Finally, he stood atop a small mountain of steel wreckage, gazing up at the massive shadow in the sky, and spat out the cigarette butt he’d been biting, long burnt out.
He watched tranquilly at the massive shadow in the sky.
With a body covered in scars, he lifted the chain hammer once again.
Just then, a glare streaked past behind him, the sharp blade swiftly slicing open his back, blood spurting out like a fountain.
A blue-painted Mecha appeared behind him.
And as his body was about to hit the ground, the Mecha once again raised its giant sword, poised to cleave him in two.
Boom—
In that instant, a speeding off-road vehicle raced up the mound of wreckage and collided with the giant sword in the sky.
The off-road vehicle was bisected, exploding violently, but it momentarily disrupted the sword’s descent.
A young man in Federal Bureau of Investigation uniform burst from the rear of the off-road vehicle, stood beside Gast who had rolled to the ground, and opened fire at the dense swarm of drones overhead.
"Damn it,"
Gast glanced at the young man, "Kid, didn’t I tell you to run?"
"Director, there’s no escaping now."
The young man smiled, looking up at the Mecha in the sky while continuing to pull the trigger.
Bullets pinged off the drone armor, leaving only shallow marks.
At that moment, the blue-painted Mecha didn’t pause for an instant; its dark massive sword fell once more.
The heavy blade, carrying a breath of death, swept past the cheeks of both men.
Bang—
The sword ultimately stopped right in front of them, the pristine broadsword blocking the dark blade and then, with a fierce snap, stepped forward, its brilliance slicing the blue-painted Mecha in two.
Afterward, the pure white sword with its trail of flame split the swarm of drones apart, cleaving through the darkened sky.
