Chapter 743: Chapter 743: A Passing Good Samaritan (Long Chapter, Requesting Monthly Tickets)
Newland City-State · Wenlan Island
The dim night shrouded the noisy city, and sudden bursts of gunfire sounded on the silent streets.
Amidst the dangerous racket, clusters of monsters swarming towards the skyscrapers kept falling.
Standing in a towering office, Kodo brushed aside the curtain beside his desk and peered down at the seemingly endless swarm of monsters pouring from the city.
There appeared to be flickering car lights approaching in the distance; in this pitch-black city, people still uncollected scurried like headless flies on the streets, dodging the monsters.
"How are things?"
Kodo picked up the walkie-talkie and pressed the talk button.
"Boss, we’re still holding up,"
came the intermittent laughter through the walkie-talkie, mixed with the sound of gunfire, "These monsters are a piece of cake for us. These guys have no idea what place they’ve come to. You don’t need to come down; we’ll have it cleaned up soon."
"Good."
Kodo replied and let the curtain fall.
He looked at the walkie-talkie in his hand.
Usually, in situations like this, whether facing the bizarre or confronting dangerous Transcendents, he would be on the front line. This is also why he could make so many people in the Newland City-State sincerely follow him, despite not being a local.
And this was the first time he hadn’t truly been on the front line.
"You seem to be hesitating?"
The figure standing beside the mirror, identical to him, smiled through the glass at him, "With just one word, you can let your subordinates immediately let those little darlings in,"
The figure walked into the depths of the mirror and took a bottle of champagne from a cabinet in the mirror world, "You know, they’ll doubt your decision, but they will never question it. They will follow your orders, just as they always have."
Pop—
The champagne cork burst open from the pressure inside, the flying stopper streaking through the space in the mirror, as if piercing Kodo’s heart, "Then, utter chaos will descend on this world, and the Great Being who reigns above the boundless starry sky will come into this world. A new Chapter of the world will begin."
The figure picked up the champagne and walked in front of the mirror, gazing at Kodo outside the mirror, "Now, all you need to do is pick up the walkie-talkie and say one word, and we will all become the masters of the new world."
Kodo quietly watched the mirror figure; he turned to glance at the window covered by the curtain, faintly, he seemed to hear the screams of a vehicle crashing into a horde of monsters.
He lowered his head, under the watchful eye of the mirror figure, glanced at the walkie-talkie in his hand, and slowly sat in the chair at his desk.
His hands trembled slightly.
A silent stillness spread throughout the office.
The figure in the mirror was in no rush; he took a champagne flute from the cabinet he had opened in the mirror and poured the champagne into it.
The clear liquid with some bubbles flowed down the shaking walls of the glass.
"Is there no other choice?"
Kodo gripped the walkie-talkie, his arm shaking almost uncontrollably.
"This is the world’s final destination,"
the mirror figure lifted the glass to his lips and gently sipped the champagne,
"The only difference lies in who will unlock this end. Now, fate has chosen us. If we ignore fate’s choice, that would be quite foolish, wouldn’t it?
"You don’t have to worry about your subordinates. In the new world, they will all achieve eternity."
"And what about this city, the other people in this world?"
Kodo pulled open a drawer, his hands trembling as he took out a cigar, clipped both ends, and put it in his mouth. Then he opened another drawer and took out a cigar lighter.
"You are not from this city, so why should you care about their survival or death,"
The mirror image set down the wine glass, smiling as he watched Kodo, trembling, trying to light his lighter, "As for others, when the new world arrives, isn’t it normal to have some necessary losses? As the leader of the new world, getting rid of those who might resist you in advance is also a good thing, isn’t it?"
"Ah, that sounds really nice,"
Kodo’s shaking hands moved the flame gradually toward the cigar. He glanced at the window covered by curtains. Beyond that window were howling monsters, scattered blood, and people struggling with displacement and death, their fear and sorrow blanketing the night,
"After your so-called advent of the new world, will I still be able to see a peaceful sunrise outside this window?"
His hands stopped shaking and calmly steadied the flame towards the cigar in his mouth.
But just as the flame was about to touch the cigar, his body froze like a paused movie scene, stopping in place.
"It seems you are not willing to make the right decision after all."
The ethereal image in the mirror put down the champagne and glass, took a step forward, crossed the mirror surface, and walked step by step toward Kodo, looking at the blazing flame on the lighter.
His finger touched the flame, and simultaneously, ’Kodo’ released his grip, extinguishing the flame abruptly. The lighter fell on the desk with a soft ’thud.’
He looked up at the cigar in Kodo’s mouth, manipulating ’Kodo’s’ body to remove the cigar,
"Exploding Cigar, quite a good name. Once it touches a flame, it will explode violently. At close range, it can easily kill a D-level Transcendent and seriously injure a C-level one. Did you come back here with me just to use this to die together with me?"
Kodo’s eyes widened as he gazed at him.
"Unfortunately, you overestimated yourself,"
The shadow revealed a calm smile, "Since you are not willing to speak up, let me help you."
Then, Kodo watched as his body lost control, reaching out slowly and taking the walkie-talkie from the desk, pressing the talk button.
And at that moment, his movements froze again.
He looked at the figure before him, his entire body rigid in some kind of struggle for control. He slowly opened his mouth, articulating each word deliberately, "I haven’t lost yet... don’t you think."
"Impressive willpower,"
The illusionary figure looked at Kodo and smiled, "But it’s all over now."
Kodo watched his hand’s movements helplessly as his body uncontrollably pressed the talk button on the walkie-talkie again.
Boom!
At that moment, the office door, which had been tightly shut, was suddenly kicked open.
"Kodo, what’s going on?"
Chen Lin, carrying a ring-head greatsword, rushed in, taking in everything in the office.
In their previous conversation, Kodo’s words had shown clear evasion. Realizing something was wrong, Chen Lin had sought out Moonlight’s people for Kodo’s whereabouts and came looking.
In his sight, Kodo sat behind the office desk, gripping the walkie-talkie, his body stiff.
And at the sight of him, a hint of joy appeared on Kodo’s face as he turned his gaze to Chen Lin, "Kill me!"
Chen Lin: ?
"I don’t agree with most of what your little director says," Kodo looked at Chen Lin, speaking with difficulty word by word, "but he got one thing right—I can... trust... you!"
After saying this, Kodo seemed to lose control over his body and shut his mouth completely.
Chen Lin immediately realized what he was referring to—it was the phrase He Ao had said to them before, ’We can trust those who stand with us against death here and now.’
Both he and Kodo agreed with this.
After a brief pause, Chen Lin, meeting Kodo’s expectant gaze, lifted the ring-head greatsword and charged at Kodo with a lunge.
In that instant, a black light suddenly burst from outside the office door, striking toward Chen Lin in a flash.
Bang—
Chen Lin parried with his sword, but was still struck by the radiance and sent flying into the wall, creating a breach and coughing up blood.
The dark light, too, revealed its figure in front of Kodo.
It was an ordinary-looking man dressed in black with the Moonlight insignia.
Kodo stared at the man, his eyes widening with disbelief.
Chen Lin propped himself up with his broadsword, also focusing on the man.
He had once encountered this man while collecting ’Door’ energy; in his memory, this seemed to be just an ordinary member of the Moonlight with only F-level strength, but in the recent fight, he had suddenly exploded with D-level power.
"Did you think I hadn’t taken any precautions?"
A cold, hoarse voice that was completely different from his own tone emanated from ’Kodo’.
"Boss, just now Research Institute’s Chen Lin went up, is everything alright on your end?"
At that moment, a doubtful greeting came through the walkie-talkie in Kodo’s hand.
Everyone’s attention immediately centered on that walkie-talkie.
’Kodo’ raised his hand to press the talk button on the walkie-talkie, ready to respond.
At the same time, Chen Lin flicked a dart from his hand towards ’Kodo’s’ wrist.
And the instant the dart flew out, he stepped forward and, with his broadsword in hand, charged at ’Kodo’.
’Kodo’ immediately jumped up, dodging the incoming dart.
At that moment, a short spike appeared in the black-clad man’s hand, as he swiftly approached Chen Lin.
Clang—
The spike collided with the raised broadsword, emitting a clear sound.
In this brief clash, the black-clad man’s strength was completely suppressed by Chen Lin.
He was inherently not as strong as Chen Lin; the advantage he had just obtained was solely through a sneak attack.
"Give up,"
he said to Chen Lin, "We have a C-level person coming up here soon, all of your struggles are in vain."
"Get out of the way!"
Chen Lin’s expression darkened, and he suddenly pushed forward in an attempt to bulldoze the man in black.
The man in black took a half step back, on the verge of getting knocked aside.
"Idiot."
’Kodo,’ standing behind the man in black, gave a cold snort, picked up a black longsword beside the desk, leaped out, and made a cut at Chen Lin’s neck.
Bang—Bang—Bang—
Heavy, deliberate footsteps sounded from outside the door, and a figure stopped at the entrance.
All three of them paused, their gazes shifting towards the door.
"Lord Robert! You’ve come..."
Turning around, the black-clad man’s face was lit with a smile, speaking as he looked towards the door.
Then his facial expression suddenly froze.
Conversely, Chen Lin’s eyes widened upon seeing the person at the door, "Mr. Hao Yi?!"
"Oh,"
He Ao, standing by the door, nodded to him with a smile, "Long time no see."
"How is this possible? How did you get in? Where is Lord Robert? Wasn’t he supposed to come?"
The man in black was completely flustered.
These were also the questions that puzzled Chen Lin, but at this moment, he didn’t have the time to question. He took advantage of the black-clad man’s distraction, swung his broadsword fiercely forward, attempting to knock the man away.
"Hold him back."
Yet someone’s movements were faster than his.
The Kodo next to the black-clad man flipped his hand and slapped the man towards He Ao, then suddenly wielded his sword, ready to sever Chen Lin’s neck completely in the moment Chen Lin’s attack on the black-clad man missed.
In midair, the black-clad man stalled for a moment. He looked at He Ao, his heart hardened, and he wielded his spike towards He Ao’s face.
He Ao glanced at him, sidestepped, and brushed past him.
While he was baffled, a sword light like a phantom pierced through his body.
Bang—
The pitch-black greatsword swung by ’Kodo’ suddenly stopped in mid-air, its sharp edge just touching Chen Lin’s neck, shallow blood already visible.
But that was it, for the blade was pinched between He Ao’s left index finger and thumb, seemingly as light as feather, but it was immobilized as though embedded in a great mountain of stone, unable to move further.
Meanwhile, He Ao looked up at Kodo, lifted his right hand, and lightly slapped it on Kodo’s chest.
"Get out!"
In that instant, the original soul made its Advent, and Super Memory was activated at once.
Mental Assault!
An immense mental power affected Kodo’s soul instantly, like an invisible giant hand seizing the shadow that was creeping over Kodo’s soul and then forcefully pulling.
Rip—
Under the silent lighting, everyone felt as if this crisp sound echoed deep within their souls.
’Kodo’s face paled, his body suddenly weakened, and a vast Black Shadow was forcefully extracted from within him, hovering in the silent air.
He Ao, having seized Kodo by the collar, lightly tossed him backward, flinging him into the still unresponsive Chen Lin, "Take him away."
Chen Lin glanced at the unconscious Kodo in his arms and without hesitation, carried him and quickly retreated, rushing out of the office door.
Meanwhile, He Ao was staring at the vast Shadow before him, his expression cold, "What should I call you? Seductor? Or the lucky one who ’escaped’ from the fourth floor of the Federation Research Institute?"
"Interesting,"
The huge Black Shadow writhed, twisting into a humanoid form of a shadow. His body flickered as his voice directly resounded in He Ao’s mind, "It seems you know quite a bit?"
He clucked his tongue in appreciation, "I’ve ’seen’ information about you from the minds of these ’servants.’ I know you are called ’Hao Yi,’
"I originally thought that what they speculated about you being that annoying ’Federation’ remnant was baseless conjecture, but now it seems you indeed have some connection with those bothersome humans.
"By rights, you should be outside this city-state now. The fact that you could bypass the barrier of Angel Power makes me curious about who you really are."
His words confirmed the ’questions’ He Ao had just raised.
"Just a law-abiding, good Samaritan passing by."
He Ao raised his hand, and the Shadowless Sword materialized in his grip.
