Chapter 720: Chapter 720: What Just Flew By? (Large Chapter, Requesting Monthly Pass)
"Next stop, Ninth District, we are currently crossing the Wenlan-Core Cross-Sea Bridge, please hold on tight, passengers."
The electronic announcement slowly sounded in the swaying bus.
The passenger in the front row glanced outside; from this vantage point, they could already see the vast sea and the faint outline of the city on the other side.
The slender cross-sea bridge, like a long rainbow laid upon the earth, stretched over the calm sea to reach the island opposite.
That was the cross-sea bridge, a testament to the glory of Newland City-State. These long ribbons connected the scattered islands together, making the journey from one island to another no longer troublesome or protracted, upon which the magnificent Newland City-State was established.
Bright sunlight poured down from the sky; now it was midday, and the bridge wasn’t very busy with traffic.
Today seemed as tranquil as the countless days that had passed before.
Sitting in the front, the passenger stared out at the sea, bored, and yawned.
Boom——
Just then, an explosion thundered like lightning striking the ground, and the intense sound of the blast swept past the bus, accompanied by a rush of hot air.
The sturdy front windshield was instantly covered in cracks.
Along with a sound like that of collapsing boulders and a sudden, fierce braking, the bus stopped.
Some passengers who hadn’t secured their footing nearly fell inside the bus, but as they steadied themselves, trembling voices reached their ears,
"Explo······ expl······ bridge······"
A passenger holding onto the grab handle raised their hand, pointing forward with a shake.
The magnificent bridge had a gaping hole in its center, broken rebar protruding like fierce veins laid bare before the onlookers.
A series of gulping sounds emerged from within the bus.
The prosperous ribbon had snapped.
······
Meanwhile, atop a tall building close to the cross-sea bridge, a handsome young man with distinct features stood up from his chair, gazing through the massive floor-to-ceiling window at the blasted section of the bridge.
Boom——
"Deputy Minister, that explosion just now!"
The office door burst open, a man with a panicked face looked towards the young man in the office.
"I don’t know,"
The young man shook his head, equally clueless, and lifted his hand to pick up the desk phone, "Hello, hello, hello, the temporary division? Put me through to Minister Wester!!!"
But all that replied to him was the clueless ’beep beep beep’ from the phone.
He put down the phone in his hand and looked out the window again.
Somehow, a restless mood began to spread within him.
Ding-a-ling-a-ling——
Just then, the phone he had just put down rang.
He immediately picked up, "Hello, the temporary division?"
But what came through was not the voice of a temporary division operator, but a somewhat panicked female voice, "Deputy Minister, we have a large crowd gathered downstairs, they are smashing, looting, burning···no, there are Transcendents, many Transcendents, they are···they are···wanted criminals···they’ve broken in!"
The young man gazed at the handset, his face darkening. He glanced at the man standing by the door, pulled open a drawer, took out a large-caliber handgun, and headed for the office door,
"Whoever is stirring things up behind the scenes, tell all the brothers to arm themselves and follow me!"
——
"Grandma, what is that noise outside?"
The dim light from the emergency lamp illuminated the cold cellar, and the little girl leaned into the elderly woman’s arms, listening to the snap, crackle, and pop sounds coming from outside, whispering her question.
"It’s nothing, nothing,"
The white-haired woman stood on the metal ladder, reaching up to touch the cellar door above her head to ensure it was locked securely. After confirming it, she slowly descended the stairs and reached out to hug her granddaughter beside her, "It will be over soon."
She stared at the dim light above, somewhat absent-minded.
In fact, she didn’t quite believe what that ’new neighbor’ said initially, but her granddaughter was insistent about getting inside, so she had no choice but to tidy up the cellar.
She did not expect that just as she finished tidying up, gunshots erupted outside.
Darkness seemed to have descended already, yet there was still a faint glow in the sky.
----
Core Island
At the top of a magnificent skyscraper, Wester stood in front of a huge glass curtain wall, looking at the bridges that had been bombed into pieces.
Behind him was a vast hall where almost all the walls had been breached, with a pattern of flames drawn in blood covering every inch of the floor.
Noises from the city, a mix of panicking cries, faint but numerous, sounded like the most exquisite music to a gaunt man standing next to Wester, momentarily echoing in his ears.
So much time had been prepared for this moment, and finally, the final moment had arrived.
He looked towards Wester with uncontrollable fanaticism in his eyes, "Leader, shall we begin now? The glory of chaos shall soon envelop this world."
Wester watched the land before him with a calm gaze, flicking a coin into the air, where it flipped several times before landing in his palm.
Under the gaunt man’s watchful eye, Wester slowly opened his hand to reveal the face of the coin.
Heads up.
The next second, the space behind him rippled like water, and fully armed guards, as well as figures in shackles, appeared in the hall.
These people looked around, confused.
The hall they had been in just a moment ago was similar to the one they were in now, but not exactly the same.
"We’ve returned to the real world."
Wu Lan, who was seated against the wall, glanced outside the window and said in a low, hoarse voice, "Do you know where we are?"
"Judging by the scenery around us, it seems like we’re at the top of the financial building in the city center, about two hundred meters high."
Xia Ye sat next to her friend, taking a look at the view outside the window. She had worked in this city for many years and was very familiar with its sights.
She had some injuries herself, but they were not serious. The power disparity between her and Wester was too great; she was captured after barely putting up a fight. She turned back to look at Wu Lan, "What can we do next?"
"Wait... cough... cough..."
Wu Lan glanced at Wester in front of the floor-to-ceiling window and coughed violently twice.
Before she could finish, Wester, who was next to the bed, suddenly turned around and waved his hand, summoning several guards over.
"What are you trying to do?"
Xia Ye instinctively stood in front of her friend.
"It’s alright, it’s alright,"
Wu Lan gently pushed her away, "cough... they can’t kill me yet."
She staggered to her feet; from the shackles on her hands, a continuous flow of some power seeped out, acting upon her and restricting her movements. The two guards tried to come over to support her, but she waved them off, "No need, I’m not that badly injured."
Then she slowly propped herself up, taking step by step forward with shackles on her, fresh blood oozing out from her slightly healed wounds due to the movement, dropping at her feet.
But she did not even furrow her brows, moving steadily closer, until she stood before Wester. She straightened up, calmly staring at him, "So, what exactly do you intend to do?"
Wester raised his eyes, showed a hint of surprise at the sight of the woman before him, and then smiled, "You are an admirable warrior, and very smart too. If I gave you any more time, I might not have had the chance to catch you."
"Give me a bit more time, and perhaps it would be you wearing these shackles."
Wu Lan looked at Wester in front of her, her gaze serene.
"I wouldn’t rule out that possibility,"
Wester glanced at Wu Lan, then turned his head to look at the hazy city outside the window, "So I didn’t give you any time, did I?"
"So, you captured Xia Ye just to lure the C-level from the Research Institute here?"
Wu Lan looked at him, asking softly.
"Actually, my original plan wasn’t this urgent, but your diplomat Miss moved too quickly, touching things she shouldn’t have,"
Flames sprouted one by one in the city outside the window, the huge city’s reflection gleaming in Wester’s eyes, "The Research Institute’s branch could just provide us with enough Transcendent sacrifices, and your arrival has elevated the quality of our sacrifices, of course, this plan is indeed rushed, not withstanding close scrutiny, but..."
He turned back, looking at Wu Lan, "As long as we move quickly, none of that will be a problem, will it?"
He turned around completely, looking towards the pile of firewood behind him, the faint and flowing red glow moving along the patterns at his feet, converging beneath the pile of wood at the center,
"Madam, our conversation is over. Believe me, the whole process will be quick and painless. Merging with the God of Chaos is a rather pleasurable experience."
The guards around them set up several controlled ’hostages,’ arranging them around the central pile of firewood, forming a semi-circle opening towards Wester.
These people looked as if they had been starving for a long while, most of them injured and shackled, with virtually no strength to resist.
Xia Ye and the staff from the Research Institute branch were also brought over and placed near the outer edge.
Analog clock hung above the grand hall, its second hand ticking away.
Some time had passed since they had been pulled back to the real world.
Wu Lan bit her bloodied lower lip and glanced at Wester beside her, then without any hesitation, she lunged at Wester.
This sudden attack seemed also to catch Wester and the gaunt man by his side off guard, Wester’s balance lost in an instant, then he was hit by Wu Lan against the giant glass floor-to-ceiling window.
Bang—
Accompanied by a crisp sound, the thick floor-to-ceiling window glass shattered thunderously.
The scattered glass pieces spread out like droplets, the high wind almost blowing through Wester’s hair strands.
But in the end, Wester stopped at the edge of the floor, not getting knocked out of the building by this sudden attack.
"Madam,"
Feeling the high wind brushing his back, Wester gazed at the forceful Wu Lan before him, reaching out to grasp her throat.
He forcefully tightened his arm, tossing the woman in his grip as if she were a doll, and she landed right in the pile of firewood.
"Cough cough..."
Wu Lan struggled to lift her upper body from the firewood, coughing out flecks of blood.
Her ponytail was long undone, her loose hair draping over her shoulders and chest, with some strands partly veiling her pale cheek.
"If this is your final move, then I’m afraid it’s rather regrettable."
Wester watched Wu Lan calmly, stepping towards her in the pile, the gaunt man by his side drew a slender sword, respectfully handing it to Wester,
"If you are trying to delay things in the hope of a rescue."
Wester lifted the slender sword in his hand, the clock hanging in mid-air striking twelve, a thin, mocking smile appeared on the man’s cheek,
"I’m sorry, but aside from those present here, no one knows we are here, and no one will know I am here, including your Research Institute’s B-level and that ’Hao Yi’. And by the time they do, everything will already be over."
Just then, a figure suddenly dashed out from the crowd, trying to stop Wester.
The gaunt man standing beside Wester didn’t hesitate. He lifted his foot and kicked the figure, sending it flying.
"Yezi!"
Wu Lan looked at the figure that was kicked away and frantically called out.
The figure of Xia Ye that was kicked away crashed into a wall, coughing up a mouthful of fresh blood.
"Such touching friendship, what a pity, beautiful lady,"
Wester’s thin sword traced an arc of light in the air as he looked at Wu Lan, a smile of slight arrogance and mockery on his face, "The game is over."
Flames suddenly burst from the center of the woodpile and in an instant, spread across the entire stack, the dazzling red glow traveling through the hall’s lines, illuminating the whole space.
Beyond the endless expanse of time and space, it seemed as if a vast and boundless existence was opening its eyes and looking towards this place.
The heartbeat-skipping aura made everyone tremble.
"Great God of Chaos!"
Wester excitedly raised both hands, lifted his head as if he was looking at the ceiling above, or perhaps at the Great Being beyond the endless expanse of time and space.
With a near roar, he shouted loudly, "I have perceived it, Order Universe, you are a miracle, amidst chaos..."
Boom—
The roaring sound of the train interrupted all speech. The man standing in the center of the hall, wild laughter fading, sword in hand, was hit directly by the massive train head and sent flying out through the shattered French window.
Lying in the fierce fire, the woman only saw the broad vehicle suddenly block her view.
She watched the wheels passing over from the void move through the flames and let out a long sigh of relief.
She tried to rise from amongst the burning wood, but after a few attempts, she collapsed back down. These flames weren’t scorching hot, but they carried a sense of twisted chaos, these auras relentlessly invaded her body, making her weaker and weaker.
Just at that moment, a broad palm passed through the flames, stopping in front of her.
She looked at the palm, then at the figure who extended it, showing a smile and struggling to lift her hand to grasp the palm.
Then, she felt a mighty force coming from the arm, pulling her straight out of the fire and into the spacious carriage.
"Cough cough—"
She sat on the floor leaning against the carriage wall, looking at the young man standing at the door, and smiled, "I was starting to think you wouldn’t come."
"The space around here is a bit weird, delayed me for a bit."
He Ao took a can out of his pocket and handed it to Wu Lan.
"Did you make a trip to the Western Lands?"
Wu Lan looked at the can, hesitated for a moment, then took it, "Thank you."
This can was ’Nutritional Canned Food’ given by Yang De, able to quickly recover injuries. It had been on He Ao’s person since returning from the Navigator.
And the fact that ’Hao Yi’ could get something from He Ao wasn’t particularly surprising, after all, they had fought side by side before on the Navigator.
So He Ao simply returned to the Western Lands to get this Nutritional Canned Food.
At the same time, the Shadowless Sword appeared in He Ao’s hand. He raised his hand and chopped, casually breaking the shackles in Wu Lan’s hand.
"By the way,"
At this point, Wu Lan suddenly realized it was quiet, she looked at He Ao, "Was something just knocked out a moment ago?"
Thump—
On the edge of the shattered French window, a giant hand clawed its way up.
