Chapter 674: Chapter 674: ’Feed’ (Major Chapter, Requesting Monthly Tickets)
"Your service is quite thorough."
He Ao’s wristband vibrated, and he leaned on his cane, looking up at the ’front desk’ above him, smiling.
He had always known that the front desk was above his head, following him, but he wasn’t surprised.
The moment he entered the hall and activated Super Memory, he knew that the front desk had completely merged with the contamination and turned into a twisted monster.
"Behind this door, do you have something you can’t reveal?"
He Ao looked up at the front desk crouching on the ceiling and asked.
"Sorry, that’s confidential."
The front desk fixed its gaze on He Ao, climbing swiftly along the wall, swiftly drawing near to the ground. She fell from the wall, her head twisting back into place, watching He Ao, "Elderly sir, you don’t seem surprised?"
"There’s no shortage of strange monsters in this world; one gets used to it after seeing enough of them," He Ao said calmly.
"You’re quite charming, Elderly sir."
The front desk coiled her body, like a beast ready to pounce, "But it’s quite impolite to call a girl a monster to her face."
Her arms rapidly elongated, and what had been nails were now sharp, metallic claws.
The moment her words ended, she lunged forward, claws flung out towards He Ao’s throat, aiming to pierce through his neck.
He Ao planted his cane on the ground, his muscles bulging as he suddenly dodged to the side.
The sharp claws missed their target, instead slicing through the chain that secured the door behind him, cutting it cleanly through.
The severed end of the chain swung down, striking the door with a loud bang.
"Elderly sir, you have good reflexes,"
The front desk turned around, licking her crimson lips, her thighs encased in stockings suddenly tensed, and she kicked high towards He Ao’s temple.
The tight skirt slid up along the raised thigh.
A smile curled on the front desk’s lips, but the next second, it froze on her face.
A sharp blade pierced her heart.
"Simple seduction tactics,"
He Ao stepped aside, careful not to let the blood splatter on his suit.
He calmly rolled up his sleeve, drew out a butterfly knife, "Thanks for the help."
The sharp blade retracted into the handle of the butterfly knife, and He Ao turned to look at the iron chain that the front desk had just severed.
The body of the front desk followed the motion of his sidestep, skimming past the space beside him and crashing to the ground with a thud.
Along with that thud, there was also the clear sound of metal clashing as He Ao unwrapped the chain from around the door.
By the time he had completely removed the chain, he stretched out his hand and placed it on the doorknob.
Just then, his wristband vibrated again.
He Ao looked at his wristband, which displayed a screen projected by Eve, showing the black market chat interface.
Blood Wolf had sent him two messages: one sent during his fight with the front desk, asking him, "How are you considering it?"
One sent at present,
"If you do well on your test mission, I can assign you more tasks. This is a long-term deal, with a lot of earnings waiting for you down the line. You could even join us and gain more Transcendent powers. Your profile says you’re a lone wolf; you should know, secret Transcendent organizations like ours aren’t easy to find."
It seems the Evolution Acolytes are truly short on people.
He Ao glanced at the message and replied,
"I was just asking casually before."
After this message was sent, the other side seemed to have a lot to say and kept showing that it was typing.
However, He Ao set down the bracelet and pressed his hand on the doorknob, slowly pulling open the iron door.
A narrow, silent corridor appeared before his eyes.
There were no alarm sounds or panicked crowds around.
It looked like the receptionist from before was very confident, thinking she could easily handle He Ao, so she didn’t sound the alarm; she appeared to want to "hog" He Ao’s flesh and soul.
Of course, this also had a certain relationship to He Ao deliberately letting his guard down, pretending not to notice the receptionist, which boosted her confidence.
After opening the door, He Ao didn’t immediately enter the corridor, but instead, he turned off the bracelet’s light and turned on the bracelet’s camera, aiming it at the inside of the corridor.
A camera hanging upside down at the very top of the wall appeared in the lens of the bracelet.
"Enter through the right-hand door, stick to the wall and go straight to the right," Eve quickly identified the model of the camera and planned a route under the camera’s blind spot through the Bluetooth earpiece for He Ao.
He Ao, following Eve’s guidance, slowly moved inside along the opened iron door.
The death of the receptionist wouldn’t go unnoticed for long; once the higher-ups of the Evolution Acolytes discovered the absence of the receptionist through some checking mechanism, they would surely sound the alarm.
Therefore, He Ao needed to make good use of this brief period to see if he could find a location that could access the building’s intranet, allowing Eve to take control of the main computer and copy its data.
This time, the corridor wasn’t just flanked by two walls; along both sides of the corridor were white doors arranged in sequence.
Each door had a silver doorplate hanging on it, indicating the corresponding room.
He Ao looked down the hallway.
The doorplates on these rooms were labelled in sequence: "Breeding Room 9," "Breeding Room 8," "Breeding Room 7," "Breeding Room 6."
The corridor did not connect to the entrance or exit of the entire sector but was a section of the middle corridor, with a corner behind Breeding Room 9 and another in front of Breeding Room 6.
The position where He Ao was standing was close to Breeding Room 6, and he had only taken a few steps along the camera’s blind spot when he passed the doorway of Breeding Room 6, reaching the corner of the corridor.
The numbering of these rooms resembled a "breeding farm."
According to Cito’s work memories, under normal circumstances, the Federation’s breeding farms, for the ease of operation by the staff, would definitely set up feeding rooms and other related intelligent system control rooms at the entrance to the breeding area, ensuring convenience and improving feeding efficiency.
Although what was being bred here was most likely not ordinary "livestock," the standard sequencing of these breeding rooms suggested that the logic of the area’s distribution could be consistent.
Next to Breeding Room 1, there should be the Control Room and feeding room.
It seemed that it wasn’t feeding time now, as there were no "staff" in the corridor.
He Ao stood at the corner, extended his bracelet, and once again illuminated the camera’s position behind the corner with the bracelet.
Eve promptly identified the model of the camera and told He Ao the position of the camera’s blind spot.
This time there was no blind spot on the ground at the corner where the camera was positioned.
He Ao looked up at the ceiling.
The ceiling of this corridor wasn’t very high, only a little over two meters, which didn’t match the depth after climbing three flights of stairs, and the corridor wasn’t very wide. If He Ao spread his arms out, he could touch the walls on both sides at the same time.
It seemed that whoever built this corridor tried to minimize its space as much as possible to make room for the breeding rooms and other spaces.
He Ao took out a Butterfly Knife, inserted it into the wall, and alternated between the knife and his cane to quickly climb beneath the ceiling.
Then, he carefully moved along the ceiling with his hands and feet pressed against the walls on both sides, skillfully maneuvering around the corner.
There are no blind spots on the ground, but there are on the ceiling.
After turning the corner was a dimly lit corridor, even longer than the one He Ao had just come from.
There are a total of seven rooms along the corridor.
On the left side are four rooms, in order they are Breeding Room 5, Breeding Room 3, Breeding Room 1, and the ’Control Room’.
On the right side are three rooms, which are Breeding Room 4, Breeding Room 2, and the ’Feed Room’.
Judging by the spacing between doors, the Control Room is a very small room, while the Feed Room is about the same size as a Breeding Room, or even slightly larger.
Past these seven rooms, at the end of the corridor, stands a silent elevator door.
The elevator on the first floor is not located here; it seems that the elevator on the first floor does not actually go down below. After going up, one would have to change to another elevator to come down.
So He Ao’s act of opening the fire escape drew the ’attention’ of the reception.
Ding——
While He Ao was scanning the layout of the corridor and carefully moving forward with his hands and feet braced against the walls on either side, a crisp sound rang in his ears.
The closed elevator doors slowly opened.
Two men in pure white work uniforms slowly walked out of the elevator.
"We’ve got a notice from above, there’s a shortage of feed lately, the new batch of feed that’s been captured should be prioritized for West City. We only have to wait for the next batch," one of the men said.
The man with curly brown hair glanced at his wristband and sighed.
"When has it not been like this?"
The man beside him, who was not very tall and rather thin, sighed as well, "West City almost never runs out of feed. Who can blame them when they’re ranked higher than us? Even the Minister is over there."
"I haven’t had meat for many days."
The man with curly brown hair let out a sigh, walked up to the Control Room, and swiped his work card to unlock the door.
"The feed in the Feed Room is reserved for the ’livestock’; it’s not our turn, and we’d be killed by the boss if caught," the thin man sighed, "Forget it. We still need to start work later tonight, I’m going to take inventory of the Feed Room soon."
"I heard that those who come from the black market and join the organization usually have enough supplies," the man with curly brown hair said as he pushed open the door to the Control Room.
"They can find their own food and supply themselves; it’s different for us," the thin man followed the curly-haired man into the Control Room, "If you really want to compare, aren’t we much better off than that woman at the reception? She may act high and mighty, but she sees all that feed coming and going every day without being able to eat any, yet she has to smile and serve people. If I were her, I would’ve suffocated a long time ago."
"Hahaha."
This remark made the man with brown curly hair laugh.
As the brown-haired man reached to close the door, the thin man stopped him, "Don’t close it yet, I need to grab the inventory list before I start checking the supplies."
With that, he half-entered the Control Room and took an electronic Paper Book tablet from behind the door on the wall.
"You get on with it, I’m going to take a nap," the man with curly brown hair walked deeper into the Control Room.
"Okay."
And the thin man, holding the electronic Paper Book tablet, left the Control Room.
He crossed the corridor diagonally, lifted his work card, and swiped open the door to the Feed Room.
Then, with a backward motion, he carried the door handle and walked deeper into the feed room.
The door that had been opened slowly closed, but just as the gap was about to close completely, four gaunt fingers slipped through the crack and caught on the door, preventing it from closing.
Following that, the hand slowly exerted force and pushed the door open again.
He Ao entered this ’feed room’.
The first thing that caught his eye were two slightly blood-stained racks, each equipped with steel rings to secure hands and feet, with various whips or torture devices hanging from them or leaning against the racks.
These torture devices were of various kinds, including boards, long whips, and blood-stained, rusted steel pipes.
Accompanied by the blood, these devices appeared sinister and horrifying under the dim light.
Beside the racks were rows of densely stacked iron cages.
Each of these iron cages was nearly two meters tall and one and a half meters wide, with a narrow door on the left side.
They were stacked one on top of the other like bricks used to build a wall, fixed in place with some kind of steel framework, forming a wall constructed of iron cages.
Peering through the gaps between the cages, it was evident that this wall of cages wasn’t the only one; there were many more ’walls’ behind it.
The layout of this ’feed room’ consisted of two walls of iron cages back-to-back, with a narrow corridor just wide enough for one person in between, followed by another set of back-to-back iron cage walls.
Arranged in this manner.
Inside these narrow walls of cages, many were empty, but many others housed disheveled, dirt-covered individuals, wearing tattered clothes.
Among these people, there were the elderly, children, men and women. Some curled up inside their cages, deeply asleep, some stared blankly upwards, while others looked around aimlessly out of boredom.
Each of them wore a steel collar around their neck, displaying a number. These collars were attached to the cage tops with thick chains, ’binding’ them to their cages.
Many saw He Ao enter, but they remained unmoved.
Just like the livestock in a farm that blankly watches the humans standing outside the cages.
And their situation might be worse than that of the livestock; they were ’feed’.
He Ao lifted his foot and walked forward.
A giant mechanical arm was affixed to the ceiling of the entire feed room; at the end of the arm was a platform with guardrails.
It seemed that this was the ’elevator’ for the ’feed room’.
Thanks to its special structure and the space reserved for its movement, the mechanical arm could reach any of the cages in the room.
At this moment, the thin man was operating the elevator, positioning it in front of himself.
In the midst of the noise from the mechanical arm’s movement, he seemed to have heard the door opening. He didn’t turn around but instead, while controlling the tablet in his hands, he asked with slight confusion,
"Didn’t you say you were going to sleep for a bit? Why did you come along?"
He laughed, "Are you here to help me out? Or planning to sneak a bite?"
A sticky tentacle stretched out from the collar of his shirt, reaching toward the nearby cage, slipping through the gaps, and lingering over the head of a child caged inside.
It was a little boy who looked to be only seven or eight years old, curled up in the corner of the cage, lifting his head in horror at the approaching tentacle.
The tentacle circled around the child, "Look at this kid, flesh so tender. I can even taste the delicacy of his soul. There are only a little over seventy feeds left here, enough for just over a week’s feeding."
The thin man tapped a few times on the paper book in his hand, "Brother, I know you’re in a hurry, but this isn’t the time to sneak a bite. When it’s time to feed back at our place, isn’t it delightful to tear off some arms and legs in advance? Even though they might scream horribly then, but if we cut off their tongues beforehand, all they’ll be able to do is ’ah ah ah’.
"Plus, it’s harder to get caught sneaking a bite then. If you eat now and our boss finds out, we’re as good as dead."
At this point, He Ao had already walked behind the man. Leaning on his cane, he watched him and spoke calmly,
"I’m not in a hurry."
