Chapter 575: Chapter 575: Good People Should Die?! (Super-sized Chapter, Seeking Monthly Pass)
Moonlight gleamed on their shoulders as the veins on Ved’s cheeks became more pronounced, dark blood flowing through them and emitting a mysterious purple glow.
The moment the bone axe and the rapier collided, He Ao activated Super Memory, harnessing a formidable strength and confronting Ved head-on.
Both men’s feet stamped heavily on the floor, the aftershocks of their collision shattering the flooring of the derelict building, and the relentless pull of gravity dragged both men down with the fragments of stone.
Rip—
In an instant, the rapier grazed the blade of the bone axe, thrusting towards He Ao’s chest.
He Ao forcefully deflected the rapier, and their figures spiraled apart in mid-air, pulverizing the flying stone fragments which then fell like raindrops of dust.
He Ao’s feet landed on the first floor, and he watched Ved who stood opposite him.
The B-level Gene Potion he had taken seemed incomplete, for He Ao had experienced the power of a B-level, a strength that transcended human comprehension, evolving towards a sort of non-human existence.
The B-level He Ao had faced before were almost evenly split between human and monstrous forms, those who ascended normally retained their human shape, while those touched by Divine Beings largely lost the form of humanity.
Ved’s physical condition after taking the Gene Potion, however, had not reached that near-monstrous level, overall, it was even weaker than Arent’s, who had fought with He Ao using the guard Array.
He was just slightly stronger than He Ao after activating Super Memory, enough for He Ao to clash directly with him and, using skill, neutralize his strength.
However, in the Transcendent world, physical condition doesn’t represent all of one’s strength.
Under He Ao’s gaze, Ved slowly straightened up, with scattered stones falling around and between them.
The stones hit the ground with a series of pings and pongs, like raindrops striking a jade plate.
"You are indeed strong,"
Ved’s mouth split into a grin, a gash extending to his ear, revealing his viscous saliva-coated and ferocious teeth as he increasingly lost his human form.
At this point, the Gene Potion was causing aberrations beyond He Ao’s understanding; previously, those who took C-level potions largely retained their human shape.
He Ao didn’t know if the problem lay with the ingredients added by the Mysterious Person, or if it was an issue with the Gene Potion itself, but at this moment, Ved was mutating into the sort of monstrosity He Ao had seen before.
Yet Ved himself seemed completely unaware of this, his hands covered with twisted veins, as white flesh slowly swelled beneath them.
"I feel like I am nearing the Truth," Ved’s teeth clashed together, "This is wonderful. Is this the world beyond B-level? So this is what those people all think."
He stared at He Ao, mouth agape, "You really should take a look at this marvelous world."
At this moment, an odd allure began to emanate from Ved.
The attraction was faint, but exceptionally clear.
Ever since reaching C-level, He Ao had rarely encountered this kind of allure.
This sensation...
Just then, a phantom charged towards He Ao in a flash from aside.
She wore a tattered jacket, rushing towards He Ao hurriedly.
Heish?
Seeing her figure, He Ao was taken aback, but he immediately retreated.
A second later, a thin thread passed through where he had just been standing.
The ’Heish’ stood in place, smirking derisively at him before dissolving into smoke the next second.
As expected.
"Have you seen this ability before?"
A raspy voice rang out from behind He Ao, followed by the sweep of a slender blade.
He Ao swung his bone axe with force, blocking the blade. The impact threw him off his feet, and he smashed into a wall, blowing a huge hole in it.
He rose from the ground, brushing off the debris and patting the dust off his body; such a collision wasn’t enough to harm him.
He was naturally familiar with this ability. The sensation of allure he recognized, though it was far less distinct than now, he had felt it when he entered ruins before, from a monster masquerading as ’Liu Nan’.
To this day, He Ao did not know the name of that monster nor the extent of its abilities.
But strictly speaking, it was the first B-level monster he had encountered.
Ultimately, inside the ruins, he had only narrowly escaped death by dragging the monster into battle with another B-level monstrosity using a stratagem.
He had not expected to encounter an ability similar to that monster’s even in the Copy World.
But at this moment, he didn’t delve into his memories, for he knew all too well that the monster possessed a powerful Mind Reading ability.
If Ved had acquired a Talent Sequence similar to that of the monster, then Ved might also possess Mind Reading.
However, after the monster’s ordeal, He Ao had developed a strong ability to conceal his thoughts, and right now, Ved didn’t feel nearly as formidable as that monster.
"You’re hiding your thoughts,"
Ved’s body hunched, spines jutting from his spine, his flesh beginning to bulge as he stared at He Ao, thick spit oozing through gaps in his teeth,
"You have so many secrets, I can’t pry into them, senior, you really are surprising, I really want to know where this powerful strength of yours comes from."
He Ao swung his giant axe and leaped forward, hacking the axe toward Ved’s face.
But in that instant, Ved’s figure flickered and slowly disappeared.
He Ao’s strike cut through the air as he tumbled forward to release the force.
Ved was long gone; all that remained in his place was an illusion.
He Ao took a deep breath and gazed around the space.
Honestly, fighting against such cryptic Talent Sequences was an exceptionally bad experience.
The power of his Divine Sense was activated, and the trajectories of all the surrounding energy flows were reflected in his eyes.
And just at that moment, his field of vision flickered.
Bright moonlight spilled under his feet, making the cold night warm up.
"Which little dummy left the window open?"
A gentle voice with a touch of liveliness reached his ears, turning the pitch-black hall into clean white walls.
A somewhat slender figure walked past him.
The faint sound of closing a window came from behind him.
He turned around to look at what was behind him.
A woman, wearing a milk-white knitted sweater with her hair simply coiled up behind her head, was lying in front of the window, pressing the button to close it.
The figure seemed to realize that He Ao was watching her, she turned her head, and asked with a gentle and somewhat surprised smile, "What’s wrong, Jess?"
He Ao opened his mouth, then slowly closed it again. In the end, his lips trembled, and tears slid down his cheeks, "Mom."
"Yo, our handsome little guy is quite emotional today."
A gentle laugh came from the side, as the lean but upright figure took out a bottle of orange juice from the fridge.
He Ao shifted his gaze to him.
That was Jess’s father.
The figure smiled, gesturing to He Ao to look behind him.
When He Ao turned his head, right behind him was the kitchen, from which faint sounds of frying steak could be heard.
"Jess, can you help me get two onions from the fridge?"
A slightly coy voice came from the kitchen, "I seemed to have forgotten to pick them up just now."
"Go on then."
The lean man took two onions out of the fridge and handed them to He Ao.
He Ao looked at the onion, hesitated for a moment, took it, and slowly walked towards the kitchen.
"Isn’t it a bit unkind to leave a young girl to busily work alone in there?"
The gentle woman stood beside her husband, watching Jess walk away.
"Those two young ones just got married, their affection for each other is at its peak. Why go and join in the excitement?"
The man laughed.
"What’s that, I can’t join the excitement anymore? Are you tired of me? Don’t want to eat the food I make?"
The woman leaned on her husband, looked up at him, and rolled her eyes.
"Hey hey hey, I didn’t say that."
The man quickly waved his hands.
"Great, we’ve only been married for a few decades and you are sick of me already."
The woman pouted her lips and walked to the side.
The man quickly stretched out his hand, hugging his wife, "Want some orange juice?"
"Hmph," the woman glanced at the orange juice in the man’s hand, "I want sugar in mine."
"Alright, alright..."
...
He Ao listened to the two people bickering behind him and walked into the kitchen.
In the kitchen, his wife Tiny was busy at the stove with a short ponytail and wearing an apron.
"Jess, you’re here? Are Mom and Dad being all lovey-dovey outside again?"
With the steak sizzling in the small frying pan, and hearing He Ao’s footsteps, Tiny spoke while flipping the steak, "By the way, when shall we go and take a photo, the kind with a physical picture? Let’s include Mom and Dad, get one for them as well."
Hearing this sentence, He Ao stopped in his tracks and put down the onion in his hand, reaching to touch his chest.
There was nothing on his chest, but he could feel the hardness of a pendant.
He raised his head and looked around.
In the view of his Divine Sense, the surroundings were still the dark, dilapidated hall, with darkness enveloping every corner of the world.
The warm ’home’ and the cold, dangerous, abandoned building overlaid each other in He Ao’s eyes.
He felt as if he had split into two completely different people, one residing in a beautiful world, the other forced to face the cold reality.
He could feel his soul gradually weakening.
The more he immerged himself in that beautiful dream, the closer his soul was to collapse.
If there were a choice in death, this seemed like the most wonderful option.
"Do you see it?"
The hoarse voice came from behind him.
He Ao turned around, and in the darkness, Ved’s silhouette emerged. He had become less and less human, resembling a standing bug, and he looked at He Ao with a grim smile on his face,
"Senior, you’ve really retained your self-awareness. So, how do you want to choose?"
"Is this an illusion?"
He Ao asked calmly.
"No," Ved shook his head. "This is a dream, and it is ’Heaven’. I have simply awakened the most beautiful dream in your mind."
He smiled, "This world is no better than hell. Instead of staying here, why not enter your own heaven? If it were not for my inability to weave dreams for myself, I would also like to create a heaven. This ability is really great."
"In that heaven, is Professor Moke still alive?"
He Ao asked calmly.
Ved’s smile gradually faded, and he gripped the thin sword in his hand, "Senior, it seems I’ll have to personally send you to heaven."
The slender sword glided through the night, appearing instantly in front of He Ao.
He Ao swung his bone axe, blocking the strike.
His body crouched slightly, his feet planted on the ground, and with a thunderous roar, countless cracks spread like a spider web, the entire floor shattered with a crash.
The building had no basement, so they did not fall to a lower level.
As Ved’s stature grew more monstrous, his strength increased compared to before.
In contrast, He Ao’s strength was rapidly declining as his soul weakened.
The eerie influence of this ’dream’ was comprehensive.
A part of He Ao’s attention continued to be immersed in the dream, causing his ability to perform to be further weakened.
He Ao was well aware that the real deciding battle was in the extremely short time that followed, otherwise with this gradual decline and increase, he was surely doomed.
"Senior, why won’t you just die peacefully?"
Ved’s thin sword spun and thrust towards He Ao’s throat.
"If you were me,"
He Ao looked at Ved, gathering all his strength in his hands, he caught the thin sword with the bone axe, his muscles bulging like a cage on his arms, the huge bone axe whistling through the air, cleaving towards Ved’s face, "would you be content?!"
Ved drew back his sword, holding it with both hands in front of his chest to block He Ao’s slash.
However, the immense force made him kneel to dissipate the impact, his knees hitting the floor and shattering the ground.
Looking down from above, He Ao’s disheveled hair hung beside his cheeks, "All these years, have you been by the Mysterious Person’s side? Have you ever seen me do anything bad?"
"No."
"Have you seen Professor Moke do anything bad?"
"No."
"Have you ever heard of my father doing anything bad?"
"No, you are all good people."
"Good people should die?"
He Ao swung his bone axe, slashing sideways towards Ved’s chest.
"That’s the logic of this world."
Ved counteracted the bone axe with his hand, and the whole person was flung away by the immense force, smashing through a wall behind him.
"What kind of damn logic is that?"
He Ao stepped over the wall and looked at Ved lying in the rubble.
"So this world is hell, huh."
Ved struggled to his feet from the ground, a trickle of fresh blood seeping from the corner of his massive lips. The recent collision had inflicted no small damage on his body due to He Ao’s immense strength. He laughed as he looked at He Ao, "Senior, you’re about to die."
"I won’t die here."
He Ao calmly faced the Ved before him.
Fine beads of sweat seeped from his forehead.
His gradually weakening body, compounded with the frequent exertion of power, wore him out bit by bit.
Forcibly concentrating power into a single limb placed a double burden on his body at that moment, but now was not the time for He Ao to consider such things.
Only in this way could he gain an overwhelming advantage over Ved.
Without hesitation, he attached his Divine Sense to the axe blade, swung the great axe, and chopped once more towards the neck of Ved, who hadn’t stood up yet.
Ved raised his thin sword to block again.
Clang—
His body was once more sent flying, shattering the wall beyond.
He raised his hand to look at the thin sword within, noticing the slight nicks forming on the slender blade.
Originally, he planned to drag out the fight with He Ao, hoping to wait until He Ao grew weak enough to be easily killed, but now it seemed that, before He Ao weakened, he might be the one split in two by an enraged He Ao.
This time, he slapped the ground, propelling himself into the air, and as He Ao lunged toward him, he said, "Senior, you are strong, but it’s over."
He Ao didn’t speak, instead leapt high, and swung the bone axe down upon him from the air.
Ved positioned his thin sword in front of himself, the corners of his fierce mouth splitting open again as a twisted pattern emerged on his forehead, resembling both the cheek of a deep thinker and the overlapping faces of countless thinkers.
He chanted swiftly in a pace so rapid that He Ao couldn’t catch the words: "O hidden presence within the silent infinity of thoughts, please heed my call."
Boom—
Both bodies hit the ground, Ved half–crouched, his thin sword that had blocked the bone axe, suddenly snapping.
At the same time, infinite thoughts exploded within He Ao’s mind.
Within the vision of Super Memory, twisted Shadow tendrils appeared in the sky, sweeping toward He Ao.
He Ao looked up at those tendrils, then drew the wooden case from his back. His mind emptied of any thoughts, relying entirely on rampant battle instincts.
A devout expression crossed Ved’s face as he regarded He Ao with a gaze akin to looking at a dead man.
He Ao calmly swept a glance at him, unclasped the wooden case with one hand, and with the other, swung the great axe again towards his neck.
Ved watched He Ao unflinchingly and, wielding his broken sword, stabbed directly toward He Ao’s heart. He made no move to block the incoming axe, knowing He Ao’s mind would be interferred with and his body wouldn’t be able to respond. Life and death hung on this moment.
Boom—Boom—Boom—
It was as if the sound of fireworks exploding beside his ear, invisible tendrils seemed to emerge from the void, then bursting violently.
His short sword failed to pierce He Ao’s heart, as He Ao was a step quicker, severing Ved’s arm and diagonally cleaving through his body.
Boom—
The sharp short sword, along with the severed hand, fell to the ground. Ved looked up at He Ao’s face as purple-orange blood spilled from the corner of his mouth.
"The professor’s little granddaughter, she’s still alive," he said with a laborious smile, "I saw the old bodyguard taking her away. If I were as I am now, I definitely wouldn’t have let them leave alive."
Tendrils emerged from the void one after another, exploding again.
He Ao withdrew the bone axe, and Ved’s body fell backward.
As he collapsed, his body quickly decayed, and before long, only a transformed skeleton was left, crashing onto the shattered floor.
The berserk power swept through He Ao’s body, tearing it apart; it was the power from the wooden case attacking indiscriminately.
He Ao closed his hand over the wooden case, his body swaying.
...
"Jess, what’s wrong with you?"
In the dream, his wife Tiny came over, reaching out to touch He Ao’s forehead, "Why are you sweating? And so pale?"
He Ao gazed at that familiar face, reaching out to touch her cheek.
His hand ultimately passed through her fair skin, the entire dream world collapsing thunderously.
...
He Ao looked at the darkness that pierced his palm, reaching for the pendant on his chest.
"Jess!"
Heish quickly ran over from the darkness.
