Chapter 570: Hidden in the ’Eyes’ (Seeking Monthly Pass)
Chapter 570: Chapter 570: Hidden in the ’Eyes’ (Seeking Monthly Pass)
He Ao removed the ticket card and tucked it back into the book before taking off the bone axe and the wooden box that had been strapped to his back since he entered the door.
He glanced at the two items, took the bone axe in his hand, and put the wooden box back into the cloth cover.
By now the cloth cover was somewhat stretched, its fibers slightly deformed.
It was by stretching this cloth cover straight that He Ao had used it as a rope to tie the bone axe and the wooden box to his waist.
The wooden box was fine, but the bone axe, weighing hundreds of pounds, had pushed the cloth cover to its limits.
Nevertheless, when He Ao had purchased this cloth cover, he specified it was for carrying heavy objects and chose one of good quality, so it had not snapped immediately, which would have been quite awkward.
He Ao, with the cloth-covered wooden box in hand and the bone axe in tow, returned to the study.
He briefly activated Super Memory and, facing the bookshelf swarmed by shadowy tentacles, swung the bone axe through them.
The sharp blade of the axe passed between the tentacles without causing them any damage.
The drooping tentacles slowly curled up, ’watching’ He Ao.
These tentacles did not exist in a physical form, and thus were impervious to physical harm.
After a moment of thought, he covered the blade of the bone axe with Divine Sense and swiped at the tentacles before him once more.
The tentacles gathered around, watching He Ao as he wielded the bone axe.
It seemed they could not understand why He Ao was attempting something impossible.
But at the same time, the cautious force that had been trying to invade He Ao’s mind became agitated, gradually increasing the intensity of its assaults on him.
Although these forces were intangible, they seemed to be connected to the tentacles.
The tentacles sensed that He Ao could see them and that he was trying to attack them.
They unabashedly increased their invasive force, as if mocking He Ao for his futile attempt to physically attack their ethereal beings.
However, their ’mockery’ came to an abrupt halt as the Divine Sense-covered blade passed through the imaginary tentacles.
Unlike the first time when it had passed through effortlessly, this time He Ao felt a slight resistance in his grip on the bone axe.
The dimly glowing blade of the axe cut into the writhing tentacle, slicing the ghostly shadow apart.
Indeed, Divine Sense was able to inflict damage on such things.
At the same time, He Ao could feel the Divine Sense coating the blade being rapidly depleted.
In a very short amount of time, the sharp bone axe had cleaved through the tentacle, severing it, and the ethereal appendage fell to the ground, rolling about.
The force that had been rapidly intensifying its assault on He Ao’s psyche paused for a moment, as if in shock that He Ao could indeed harm them.
But what followed was a storm-like retaliatory onslaught.
Nonsensical whispers multiplied in strength burst forth beside He Ao’s ears all at once, and streams of soul-probing forces frantically invaded He Ao’s mind.
Such an intense attack might have been too much for a C-level with a weak soul to remain sane, yet He Ao’s expression remained calm, his composure unaltered.
Powerful as these whispers were, they still paled in comparison to the oppressive sensation he had faced when confronting the suspected true form of this secretive entity in the mental hospital.
Countless tentacles instantaneously rose, winding around He Ao’s body, enveloping his soul, and began attempting to invade his body.
Threads of fresh blood seeped from He Ao’s skin, his originally pale complexion began to exhibit an abnormal pink hue.
A flurry of chaotic thoughts rushed into He Ao’s body, starting to try to control his limbs, contaminate his soul, and twist his will.
In the face of this powerful onslaught, He Ao stood unyielding, his facial expression unchanged as he manipulated his Soul Power with extreme caution to make contact with the severed Shadow tentacle that had fallen to the ground.
Boom—
The moment his Soul Power touched the tentacle, a thunderous explosion sounded in his mind, followed by numerous chaotic thoughts that burst into his psyche.
"Heehee"
"Hahaha"
"Hehe"
A series of cold sneers echoed in He Ao’s mind, mixed with the chaotic thoughts, seemingly mocking He Ao for falling into the trap and seeking his own death by touching those severed Shadows.
But amid these sneers, He Ao’s expression was calm, even a hint of a smile curling at the corner of his mouth.
Within those chaotic thoughts, there was a mix of something else.
A fragment about a certain complicated pattern.
He had guessed correctly.
He looked up at those illusory tentacles stretching down from the ceiling, entwining around his soul.
Jess’s father had hidden knowledge within these tentacles.
Right there, layered upon the powers that watched and spied on him.
The storage card contained Jess’s father’s most prized memories, those happy moments spent with family, and the last two tickets and hotel reservations were as well.
They were the escape route he had prepared for his family.
In Jess’s memory, the day his father met with disaster was abrupt; he was called away suddenly, even leaving without breakfast, departing from home.
Jess had always believed that the explosion was a sudden event, that his father had not anticipated the Mysterious Person’s sudden attack, and had made no arrangements, ultimately losing his life to the unexpected assault.
Until He Ao saw those airship tickets and hotel reservations, he too had largely agreed with Jess’s assessment.
The clues he had previously held only added credible evidence to this baseless speculation, but it didn’t explain why the Mysterious Person hadn’t managed to obtain that hidden knowledge in the end.
But after seeing the airship tickets and reservations, He Ao’s doubts were instantly resolved; it wasn’t that Jess’s father had done nothing or hadn’t detected anything. In this strategic game, he wasn’t utterly without the power to fight back.
The airship ticket could be easily explained; as the situation worsened, Jess’s father realized that the Mysterious Person might target him and his family, and it was understandable to arrange for his family to leave Vitland.
But the hotel reservation was quite peculiar.
Jess’s father had booked airship tickets for departure three days later; theoretically, they just had to wait to leave after three days, as Jess and his family had a place to live in Vitland.
This house was their home.
The hotel reservation could only mean one thing; Jess’s father had realized that ’home’ was no longer safe.
Although Jess’s father couldn’t see these invisible tendrils, he must have sensed their presence through some method.
And he also felt the damage this surveillance power inflicted on his family.
Considering the personality of Jess’s mother as remembered by Jess, she would never allow her husband to face danger alone. So if Jess’s father had told her he bought tickets for her and Jess, she wouldn’t have been willing to leave.
Therefore, after purchasing the tickets, Jess’s father didn’t immediately tell his wife, probably wanting to take some time to convince her.
Similarly, Jess wouldn’t have left his father behind, but at that time, his wife, Tiny, was on a business trip in Kaye City, so Jess’s father didn’t buy a ticket for Tiny.
Regrettably, on that day, Jess’s father no longer had the chance to prepare his wife and child psychologically.
The explosion disrupted all his plans.
However, theoretically, even though Jess’s father had passed away, if the tickets he bought were still valid, the airship company and hotel staff would have contacted Jess’s mother and Jess.
But these employees never made that call, which could only mean one thing— the tickets had been "canceled."
The person who canceled these tickets couldn’t have been Jess’s father, who had already died in an accident, but another individual who didn’t want Jess and his mother to leave Vitland, nor to leave their home.
Therefore, the identity of this person is quite straightforward. The only one with such motives and the capability and connections to cancel the orders on behalf of Jess’s father would be the Mysterious Person.
Following this logic, this proves that Jess’s father’s online activities were probably always under the surveillance of the Mysterious Person, and, like Jess, his bracelet was likely infected with a Trojan.
So as soon as Jess’s father purchased the tickets, the Mysterious Person became aware of it and immediately realized that Jess’s father had detected the "surveillance."
He then decisively led Jess’s father away and planned the "attack" on him.
He had realized that Jess’s father was an exceedingly difficult enemy who, under no circumstances, would hand over that knowledge, so he decisively made his move against Jess’s father.
In this way, he might still be able to find those hidden secrets either from Jess’s mother or from material left by Jess’s father.
In this process, the Mysterious Person actually made a misstep.
Jess’s father didn’t buy the tickets the moment he noticed the "surveillance." Instead, he made all the arrangements and hid the knowledge before purchasing them.
This resulted in the Mysterious Person’s "sudden attack" achieving nothing. Although he dealt with Jess’s father, he didn’t obtain the crucial clues.
Jess’s father and the Mysterious Person were opponents strategizing at opposite ends of the chessboard. Jess’s father, far less powerful than the Mysterious Person, ingeniously utilized the rules and leveraged his knowledge to construct a balance on the chessboard.
Although he made a wrong move and ultimately lost the game, some of the strategies he left in place on the chessboard continued to be effective.
Having roughly figured out these details, He Ao had a guess.
Where to place that knowledge so that it could be preserved and yet remain undiscovered by the Mysterious Person?
Quite simply, he hid what the ’eyes’ sought within the ’eyes’ themselves.
This involved a gamble, but Jess’s father must have also made his own assessment of the Mysterious Person’s character, and so he chose this approach.
He Ao didn’t know how Jess’s father managed to achieve this effect, but clearly, he was successful; even now, the Mysterious Person had not realized that the knowledge was hidden right under his eyelids.
Of course, he might have guessed, but perhaps he dared not interfere with those tentacles from a covert existence, so he couldn’t confirm his speculations.
Only those who could actually interfere with these tentacles could ultimately acquire the knowledge left by Jess’s father.
And to interfere with these tentacles, besides proving that the newcomer indeed harbored hostility towards them, it also proved that the newcomer was powerful, possessing the means to attack these ethereal forces and withstand the contamination.
Thus, Jess’s father had selected the person he wished to find, entrusting key matters to the right individual.
He had long anticipated his own death and therefore had arranged everything for the aftermath.
In fact, even if He Ao didn’t go to Jess’s house to look for those clues, simply attacking these tentacles would have allowed him to obtain that knowledge.
But even if He Ao had known from the start that he could acquire the knowledge hidden by Jess’s father through direct attack, he wouldn’t have chosen to attack immediately.
If he were a passerby lending a helping hand or an enemy of the Mysterious Person, there would be no issue with attacking directly, but now he was Jess.
The child of the person who had left behind this knowledge.
To Jess, knowing the efforts his father had made was as important as obtaining what his father had left behind.
The sharp axe sliced through the ethereal tentacles, and as each was severed, twisted thoughts assaulted He Ao’s mind. Those fragmented pieces of knowledge, each a tiny puzzle piece, converged in He Ao’s brain.
He Ao turned his head and looked toward the living room where countless tentacles surged toward him.
Given his current progress, he had to destroy all the tentacles in this house to obtain the complete knowledge left by Jess’s father.
His Divine Sense was now just over four strands, when he had started this Copy World, he had five and a half strands left. Despite his efforts to conserve Divine Sense during the previous battles and various situations, it was depleting very quickly.
He didn’t know if he could have an opportunity like in Limen City within this Copy World, to obtain a large amount of Divine Sense. At present, it seemed highly unlikely.
He still had to face the Mysterious Person, as well as the hidden consciousness behind the Mysterious Person. He must preserve as much Divine Sense as possible for the battles that lay ahead, and not deplete too much here.
He Ao raised his bone axe and severed several more entwining tentacles. As new knowledge flooded his mind, he lifted his other hand and pulled back the cloth sleeve enclosing a long, bar-shaped object, revealing a wooden box inside, glowing with a purple radiance.
This wooden box stored the ’Grace’ power that the Mysterious Person had obtained through the Array over the past decade and more.
This power was uncontrollable, and once the box was opened, the force within would burst forth, destroying everything nearby.
The approaching tentacles seemed to sense the terror of the wooden box and paused briefly, bypassing the box to continue their assault on He Ao.
He Ao had actually noticed that the intelligence of these tentacles was not high, most of the time they operated on some kind of twisted instinct.
From what He Ao experienced in the asylum, it seemed like the main consciousness of the hidden existence was still in some kind of sleep state.
Its power didn’t exhibit any clear intelligence, acting more like a person moving instinctively while in deep sleep.
The long wooden box shimmered with layer upon layer of purple brilliance.
This was the Array carved on the wooden box, an incomplete Array that kept the seal of the box active. However, as time passed, parts of these purple lines had worn away.
The power within the box was restless under the operation of the incomplete Array, uncontrollable.
But now, He Ao had gained some knowledge that would allow him to control this power.
He looked down at the lines on the wooden box, with the newly acquired knowledge flickering rapidly in his mind.
The fact that these tentacles instinctively avoided the wooden box meant that the power inside could truly harm them.
He Ao swung his axe again, cutting through the incoming tentacles, and as new covert knowledge entered his mind, he used the blade to cut his finger and placed the wooden box at the doorway of the study.
Bright red blood dripped from his fingertip onto the wooden box.
Following the incomplete sections of the Array, he began to draw.
