Chapter 542: Chapter 542: Jess’s Research Achievements (Vote for Monthly Tickets)

"Do you have a favorite singer?"

He Ao lifted the bracelet from his hand, swiped it over the vehicle’s sensor area, linked the bracelet to the car’s system, and at the same time, Eve began to replace the car’s system, gaining control of the vehicle.

"Is Steel Jungle okay?"

Heish raised her head, glanced at the rearview mirror at the white off-road vehicle that was relentlessly closing in on them, buckled her seatbelt quickly, and replied.

"Heavy metal?"

He Ao revealed a smile.

’Steel Jungle’ was a heavy metal band that had become extremely popular among the lower Federation populace in recent years, known for its cold, insane, and intensely passionate style.

"You university professors listen to this kind of music, too?"

Curiously, Heish glanced at He Ao and then focused on the road ahead. A ramp, glowing faintly, appeared in her field of vision. If they could shoot up this ramp, they could leave the underground parking lot.

"Occasionally."

He Ao’s fingertips tapped on the steering wheel, and suddenly the intense sound of music erupted inside the off-road vehicle.

Old man Regit used to like this band as well.

The cold night breeze, cutting through the shattered window, seeped into the cramped space, blowing across He Ao’s calm and gentle face.

Under the forceful music, Heish eyed the refined and scholarly-looking man next to her and seemed to see another shadow in him, a repressed, insane shadow.

This madness mingled with his scholarly exterior formed the ’professor’ with Transcendent killing skills before her eyes.

It was like a mask interwoven with black and white.

Meanwhile, under He Ao’s driving, the off-road vehicle’s speed increased, gradually opening up a distance from the white off-roader that was hot on their heels.

Seeing this, the burly redhead seated in the passenger’s seat put away the syringe he was holding, stood up with a jolt, flipped open the sunroof of the off-road vehicle, and thrust half his body out of the roof.

Then he pulled out from the backseat a thick silver metal tube, about the width of a child’s waist, held it on his shoulder, and aimed it directly at the off-road vehicle driven by He Ao.

A thick cable dropped from his back, diving into the depths of the enormous off-road vehicle.

"It’s a military-grade mini laser cannon."

Heish turned her head to look at the red-haired man holding the metal tube and exclaimed in surprise.

This kind of laser cannon is generally mounted on Mechas as a side or even secondary cannon, capable of piercing through an off-road vehicle that’s not equipped with anti-laser armor with a single shot. If it hit a C-level, it could make a hole in them.

Although this laser cannon was small, it wasn’t so small that one could easily hoist and rest it on their shoulder.

Considering the power cable connecting from behind the laser cannon into the vehicle, the rest of the laser cannon’s components must have been modified into the interior of the large white off-road vehicle, to facilitate powering the cannon and also shortening the barrel.

Such a mini laser cannon was not cheap, and the cost of modifying it further into a combat-capable vehicle was even more expensive.

This was now a ’combat’ vehicle equipped for fighting against C-levels.

Clearly, realizing that they might escape, the person who had laid this trap behind the scenes finally decided to show their real strength.

In a very short span of time, the portable laser cannon had already fully charged, and He Ao glanced at the rearview mirror before fiercely turning the steering wheel to the right.

The gleaming brilliance lit up the dim underground parking lot in an instant, almost causing Heish’s eyes to suffer from overloading as the light grazed the left side of the off-road vehicle and slammed into the ground at the exit ramp of the parking lot.

And it wasn’t until the glow had dissipated that Heish could see clearly what the attack had wrought.

Giant waves of heat, flowing through the broken window, caressed her beautiful cheeks. Where the laser had struck, a red, twisted mass of ’lava’ was emitting waves of scorching heat.

The power of this modified laser cannon exceeded Heish’s expectations; had the beam hit her, it could have scorched more than half her body.

"Hahaha!"

The red-haired man caught sight of his ’achievement’, let out a hearty laugh, shouldered the laser cannon again, and started to charge it.

Heish turned her head back and focused her gaze on the road ahead.

The SUV driven by He Ao was still picking up speed bit by bit, and she could clearly feel a pressing sensation against her back.

They had already entered the exit of the underground parking lot, a winding and narrow passageway.

Heish glanced at He Ao’s still calm profile, poked her head out of the window, and fired several shots at the white SUV behind them.

The bullets hit the white SUV, leaving only one or two marks, failing even to penetrate the metal shell of the vehicle.

That SUV was also specially reinforced.

At that moment, the red-haired man aimed at Heish, who had poked her head out, and released the laser cannon again.

This time, He Ao had once again predicted the red-haired man’s move, turned the corner in advance, and dodged the attack.

But the dazzling brilliance still filled Heish’s field of vision in an extremely short time, and the intense heat passed by her, even causing her wine-red hair to singe slightly.

Her heart was pounding very fast, the last time she had been this close to death was when she had just become a weak Intermediary.

Although Intermediaries, when taking on tasks, often had to find a way to complete them if they couldn’t find the right person for the job, the more renowned the Intermediary, the more power they could wield, and the less likely they were to have to act themselves.

After all, for Intermediaries, they’re simply earning a markup; it’s not worth risking their lives over.

Since becoming Vitland’s most famous Intermediary, Heish rarely got involved in such dangerous missions.

Although she had anticipated it, she still didn’t expect that the worst-case scenario would still happen.

Given the current situation, she even suspected that she might be the target of the ambush.

But fortune and misfortune are often intertwined; although she had fallen into this trap, she was fortunate to have met ’Jess’, an experienced and powerful C-level mercenary, today.

At least, from the current situation, all of ’Jess’’s actions proved he was very reliable.

They were about to escape the underground parking lot before their eyes.

Once they left this enclosed area, they would have more possibilities to break free from their pursuers.

As the SUV’s speed accelerated, the red-haired man carrying the laser cannon and the white SUV he was riding in were also ’falling back’.

This made Heish’s tension relax slightly.

At least, everything was developing in a better direction.

Zzzt—

Just as Heish was thinking this thought, the ear-piercing sound of tires rubbing against the ground and the huge inertia snapped her back to reality.

In that instant, the SUV had performed a small drift turn.

Caught off guard in the high-speed inertia, Heish was thrown sideways but fortunately was pulled back by the seatbelt.

A scorching ray of light passed by the SUV’s diagonal side, penetrating the rear passenger door and the back windshield.

Intense heat spread throughout the cramped cabin.

Laser cannon? Could that red-haired man’s laser cannon charge so quickly?

No, it wasn’t his laser cannon.

Heish realized something, turned her head back, and looked forward.

At the far end of her field of vision, rows of iron thorn barricades had already blocked the entire tunnel, and behind the iron thorns were three small laser cannons and rows of soldiers in exoskeleton armor lined up neatly around them.

The laser just now came from one of those three small laser cannons.

And at this moment, the other two laser cannons were also about to be fully charged.

Heish glanced at He Ao’s cheek.

He Ao’s expression remained very calm, as if he had anticipated this scene in advance.

Since the other side had gone through so much trouble to set up traps here, they wouldn’t let the two of them find an easy way out.

The recent laser shot had affected the off-road vehicle’s speed, allowing the red-haired man to close the distance between them once again.

Behind the red-haired man, a more ponderous sound loomed, suggesting some even more terrifying weapon was being activated.

It seemed this was a road to death from the start; the opponent had no intention of leaving her any chance to survive.

The tunnel wasn’t spacious, and even a volley from the two charging laser cannons upfront could likely destroy their off-road vehicle.

Heish glanced at the on-board display’s timer and reached to unfasten her seat belt,

"Jess, you go first. They’re probably after me. With your skills, you should be able to make it out. I’ve sent your ritual formula via a timed email; you should receive it in ten minutes. Your commission, by this point, is essentially complete."

Upon hearing this, He Ao lifted his head and looked at Heish, as the intense heavy metal music reverberated inside the vehicle.

He turned the off-road vehicle’s output power to maximum and said calmly, "Hold tight."

"What?"

Heish was taken aback, "What are you trying to do?"

She watched the iron thorn barricade ahead, knowing there was no way an off-road vehicle could get past it.

Then she noticed He Ao tilting his head slightly upward and immediately realized something. "You can’t be thinking of... It’s impossible, this vehicle can’t do..."

"Theoretically possible," He Ao, holding the steering wheel, spoke calmly, "Visual reality skills."

Under Eve’s control, the car began to operate with terrifying overclocked power, as enormous energy was continuously poured into the engine.

This riddled off-road vehicle, like a fierce gale swiftly arising, charged forward.

The intense acceleration pressed Heish and He Ao firmly into their seats, while the fierce wind passing through the shattered windows howled like the roar of a giant beast.

The two laser cannons up ahead were finally ready to complete their charge, with dazzling light gathering at their muzzles.

He Ao sharply turned the steering wheel.

Two potent laser beams slashed through the silent tunnel, illuminating the entire passageway as if it were broad daylight.

Under the glow of the intense light, the pitch-black off-road vehicle turned towards the side, crashing against the tunnel wall like an arrow.

With a violent vibration, the vehicle climbed the wall like a dark phantom, then glided over the rough tunnel roof, bypassing the wide iron thorn barricade and the rows of laser cannons, before falling back from the opposite wall and rushing toward the end of the tunnel.

The car just ’drove’ along the wall and over the roof.

The whole scene fell into a strange silence, with the full-body exoskeleton armor-wearing mercenaries who were blocking the road standing dumbfounded, as if their brains couldn’t process what had just occurred.

After what felt like an eternity, finally, a mercenary grasped what had happened. He watched the direction in which the off-road vehicle had vanished, swallowed hard, and then slowly uttered a word, "Awesome!"

His statement jolted all the mercenaries out of their shock.

The mercenary captain beside him turned to look at him, wanting to prevent such morale-boosting behavior, but after pondering for a moment and finding no way to refute the mercenary’s reaction because the maneuver indeed was awesome, he simply raised his hand and slapped the speaker’s head hard.

The speaking mercenary looked up bewilderedly at the captain, not understanding why he had been hit, but by then the captain had already walked to the front of the unit and was shouting loudly into a megaphone.

"The enemy has broken through the defenses, close the gates immediately."

Meanwhile, the dense iron thorn barricade was rapidly manipulated to scatter through a fixed traction device, but before the iron thorns completely dispersed, the huge pure white off-road vehicle had already charged forward.

The white off-road vehicle didn’t stop at all, colliding with the remaining iron thorns, knocking them aside, and speeding toward the exit.

At the same time, the red-haired man braved the gale to climb onto the roof of the car.

······

"F*ck!"

And at this moment, having just experienced a heart-stopping close call, Heish finally snapped out of her daze. She looked at He Ao, her face tinged with a hint of excited flush.

She thought hard but couldn’t come up with the words to express her feelings at the moment, so she could only add, "You’re amazing!"

While some high-end sports cars could perform such feats, those were always in promotional videos and specially arranged race tracks.

Seeing an off-road vehicle pull off such a maneuver in a real-world situation like this, Heish had only seen it in movies.

In response to Heish’s praise, He Ao merely smiled and expressed his thanks, "Actually, this wasn’t entirely reliant on me."

Mere reliance on him would not result in such superb driving skills; Eve had been assisting him throughout the drive.

"And the credit goes to this car too, huh!"

Heish took He Ao’s words and continued, as there were only two people and one car here. Having been responsible for driving in terror, if He Ao claimed it wasn’t entirely his doing, then the praise must be for the car.

Heish knew some race drivers who treated their cars as friends. The excited blush on her face slowly faded, yet her eyes still held traces of excitement; "But this car is indeed great, the power it just unleashed is stronger than my previous sports car."

Strong, indeed, thanks to overclocking.

He Ao, holding onto the slightly trembling steering wheel, knew that the car wouldn’t last long under Eve’s enforced overclocking.

But the vehicle was fundamentally robust and should hold up just enough to shake off their pursuers.

The pitch-black off-road vehicle continued to move forward with a howling speed, the dark and silent wind sweeping across their cheeks.

The person behind the trap evidently didn’t expect He Ao to find a way around their blockade, so near the exit, they hadn’t stationed any personnel.

They looked up and could almost see the underground parking exit ahead, along with the lights outside the exit illuminating the road.

However, the expansive light was narrowing slowly as a huge iron gate was gradually closing, about to seal the exit of the underground parking area.

He Ao floored the accelerator, and the pitch-black off-road vehicle charged toward the increasingly closing gate.

"That modified car is catching up again."

Heish looked back and saw the white off-road vehicle, then her gaze fell on the red-haired man on the roof, "What’s that? What is he trying to do?"

A silver metal syringe was tightly grasped in the man’s hand. Through the silver metal’s edges, Heish could see glimmers of orange light.

The man seemed to notice Heish’s gaze, revealing a somewhat fierce smile and inserting the needle of the syringe into his arm.

He Ao glanced at the syringe in the man’s hand through the rearview mirror. His expression grew serious, almost certain that it was the Gene Potion developed by Jess.

In the last moment before the iron gate closed, the pitch-black off-road vehicle skimmed the edge of the gate and burst out, landing on the wide road.

The narrow exit was insufficient for the silver off-road vehicle to break through.

But Heish felt that things weren’t going to be that simple.

In her view, the enormous iron gate was slowly closing as if the people inside had given up on coming out.

Boom—

An arm glowing with an orange radiance stretched out from behind the iron gate and suddenly braced against the closing gate.
