Chapter 532: Chapter 532: Siege (Vote for Monthly Tickets)

"Where the heck did this guy run off to?"

A tall and a short man, both clad in exoskeleton armor, walked through the dimly lit alleyway. The short man glanced around impatiently, smacking his lips as he spoke.

Raindrops trickled down his helmet.

"After all, the target is a C-level Transcendent,"

the tall man said, scanning the surroundings with the flashlight on his helmet. His calm tone soothed the short man’s agitated heart.

The short man fished out a pack of cigarettes from the box on his arm, stuck one in his mouth, and then offered one to the tall man, "If we find him, should we shoot first to claim that hundred thousand bounty?"

"Unnecessary,"

the tall man replied, putting the cigarette in his mouth and lighting it with an electronic lighter. The hazy smoke drifted through the curtain of rain,

"One must live to spend the earnings. Even with exoskeleton armor, the two of us might be no match for a C-level Transcendent. The smart move is to call our nearby comrades as soon as we spot the target. If we get the chance, we charge in and snatch the kill. No chance, we prioritize survival."

"That’s true."

The short man lit his cigarette too. Looking down, his gaze was unsettled, as if he wasn’t quite convinced by the tall man’s rationale.

Ding—

Along with a crisp sound, the display on the tall man’s wrist lit up,

"B3 team, are you guys okay?"

A husky middle-aged voice came from the wrist.

"Captain, no issues," the tall man responded promptly, "Target remains unseen."

"Be careful. Three squads have already lost contact. I’m sending you the latest search plan now. You and the nearby B4 team will join as a coordinated squad. If you spot the target, don’t act recklessly. Signal your position immediately to the others."

The husky voice spoke quickly.

"Roger that."

The tall man responded sharply.

New locations and routes began popping up on his display of where he should head to next.

"There’s been a change of plans," the tall man turned to the short man, "The target might be more formidable than we thought."

Just then, he suddenly noticed the short man’s eyes fixed on the street at the end of the tunnel, as if watching something.

"What’s up?"

He asked softly.

"I just saw a shadow with a black and white face flit by," the short man said, his voice trembling, "He was carrying two Gauss guns."

"Are you sure you didn’t see it wrong?"

The tall man glanced at the street through the rain, where it was deserted except for the sound of raindrops hitting the concrete.

"Maybe... Perhaps..."

The short man took a deep breath, trying to steady his emotions.

In an instant, a shadow loomed at the entrance of the alley, blocking the faint light from the alley’s exit.

On the cheeks of that shadow was a black and white sinister smiling mask. Under the weak streetlights, the mask’s eerie grin seemed as though an evil spirit had returned from hell.

"Ghost!"

The short man stared at the shadow, at the dried blood on its body, and staggered back several steps.

"It’s not a ghost!"

The tall man was startled at first, but quickly regained his composure, noticing He Ao’s bloody clothes, "It’s our target."

He took steps back while aiming his gun and reached for the emergency alert button on his arm, "Let’s fall back."

The alert button wasn’t far off, so he could easily reach it without exerting much effort.

However, what made him curious was why the target didn’t initiate an attack on them.

From the captain’s words, it appeared that three teams had already been dealt with by the target, which suggested the target should possess a strong offensive capability.

As he retreated, the short man beside him had already reacted.

"It’s the target!"

The short man didn’t back down but instead moved forward, rapidly raising his Gauss Rifle and aiming at the silhouette in the alleyway, "A hundred thousand federal coins are mine."

"Don’t provoke him!"

The tall man immediately shouted.

But at that moment, the short man’s finger was already on the trigger.

Seeing this, the tall man couldn’t bother with sounding the alarm and also raised his rifle, aiming at the figure at the entrance of the alleyway.

Should the short man’s shot not kill the opponent, it was highly likely that the opponent would react and launch a fierce attack, and they might not be able to bear the aggressive onslaught from a C-level Transcendent, as proven by the three teams that had been destroyed.

Therefore, he had to remain in sync with his teammate, aiming to kill the target with a barrage of bullets immediately.

Bang—

A single shot, or perhaps two shots that overlapped, rang out simultaneously.

The next second, the fast-moving bullets penetrated the sturdy armor, and flesh and blood burst forth in a spray of crimson.

Two destroyed exoskeleton armors lay on the ground.

He Ao put down his Gauss Rifle.

Then he suddenly leaped to the right, rolling out into the rain.

Bullets carrying hot steam trailed through the curtain of rain, striking the ground where He Ao had just been standing.

The old perimeter wall exploded with a bang, leaving a large hole.

Brick debris kicked up dust.

Just as expected, the other party had opened fire as He Ao had anticipated.

He Ao looked up toward the direction from where the bullets came— a rooftop of a nearby high-rise, which offered the best vantage point of the area.

He hadn’t just been standing there to be an easy target, he was drawing the sniper’s attention.

Jess had initially been hit by a sniper around here, and theoretically, if the sniper’s position had not been discovered, there was no need for the sniper to relocate.

Especially since the sniper was supported by teammates nearby.

And just as He Ao had speculated, the sniper was still somewhere around.

He Ao merely glanced at that building, then immediately dodged to the side, rolling into the shadows of another alleyway.

The next second, another bullet struck where he had just been standing, shattering stone and causing the rainwater on the street to pool into the indentation.

After entering the alleyway, He Ao stuck to the shadows and continued forward, using the memory of Jess entering the area to navigate through the myriad of alleys and streets. However, four major thoroughfares opened out in each cardinal direction with unobstructed views.

This meant that if they guarded these four streets, He Ao would be spotted no matter where he appeared.

And the sniper’s position was beyond these streets, from atop that building they could lock down the skies and the open areas.

Moreover, there was a C-level nearby for rapid support.

Clearly, this area was a ’hunting ground’ prepared especially for Jess.

To deal with a D-level, the specifications were undeniably high.

It seemed that the Mysterious Person really wanted Jess dead.

He Ao’s silhouette moved bit by bit toward the outskirts; the surrounding mercenaries weren’t forming a search circle inward but rather a scattered and staggered encirclement. Each team searched an area, tightening the circle progressively, and the teams were able to support each other quickly.

Yet the teams that had encountered He Ao had not been too keen on getting support from others.

After He Ao had dealt with the recent team, the teams around him had been wiped out, and he had also pinpointed the sniper’s location.

Of course, this also meant revealing his position.

The opponent’s commander was not lacking in skill, and by now, he should have gathered other groups to converge on this location.

He Ao glanced at the small building behind him, which conveniently blocked the sniper’s line of sight, and then he flipped onto the surrounding wall, concealing himself in the cloak of night.

After a while, a four-man squad slowly passed through the alleyway.

"The target must have vanished around here."

The leader was a muscular man carrying a gun; his communicator was constantly on, emitting a static noise.

The mercenaries behind him cautiously surveyed their surroundings, moving their feet warily.

The group quickly reached the middle of the alley, and suddenly, the leader paused his step, then abruptly raised his hand, signaling for those behind him to stop.

He then squatted down slowly, and his headlamp shined on the ground where rainwater flowed; amidst this slightly muddy water floated streaks of fresh red blood, beneath which was a clear footprint pressed into the mud.

The man suddenly realized something and looked up sharply.

What caught his eyes was a creepy black and white smiling face.

He instinctively raised his gun.

Bang bang—

With two gunshots and the sound of daggers piercing flesh, He Ao stepped into the flowing stream.

He looked back at the small building behind him; extending in a straight line from this building was the skyscraper where the sniper was located.

He withdrew his gaze to look towards the dark depths of the alley under the night sky.

His steps hit the rainwater, creating splashes.

In the turbid rain, the faint bloodstains turned into a rich red.

This was a hunting ground.

——

"D, the target is moving to Sector C, the squads in Sector A and B have been completely wiped out; Sector C is now very close to you," a hoarse voice came from the rain-soaked walkie-talkie, "We’ve lost two-thirds of our people."

"It seems even a little lamb can be pushed to become a big bad wolf," cold rain slid down the dark gun barrel, and the man’s head leaned against the scope, looking down from a high position at the scattered alleyways below, "So what do you plan to do? Abandon the mission?"

"The Transcendent of the employer is already on the way," the hoarse voice from the walkie-talkie slowly said, "Sector C is an open area, and it’s very close to you; the Transcendent hopes for our assistance."

"You mean my assistance," the man cracked a smile, slowly moving the gun muzzle, "If I could hit him with the first shot, I can hit him with the second. The difference between humans, sheep, and wolves is that humans use tools."

There was silence on the other end of the walkie-talkie, then slowly came the reply, "I’ve checked some of the scenes, the intelligence we had was skewed, and the target’s marksmanship is not bad either... "

"The sights on a Gauss Gun are not that easy to come by, although theoretically it has a long range, but it can only be used at short distances, moreover, our Gauss Rifles need to charge energy between two consecutive shots,"

The man interrupted the voice from the walkie-talkie, laughing in disdain, "Even if his marksmanship really is good, he couldn’t possibly hit me with a Gauss Gun in one shot. As long as he doesn’t kill me with one shot, he’s the one who will die, just C-level; I’ve killed them before, and with this gun, I can even hurt a C-level."

——

The raindrops splattered along the edge of the wall, and He Ao’s body was leaned behind a small building.

This was the tallest building nearby.

The area around was open space, and this building was one of the few places that could shield his figure.

He had not encountered any more mercenaries on his way here; they might have collapsed due to heavy casualties, or they might be covertly following He Ao.

However, those dead mercenaries had successfully exposed He Ao’s trail.

What He Ao had to face now, were no longer simple mercenaries.

"I thought you would be hiding here."

Footsteps sounded slowly in the night, belonging to a skinny man who seemed as thin as a bamboo pole.

His face was long and narrow, shaped like an inverted long triangle, and his two large eyes, opened wide, exuded a longing for slaughter as if an evildoer had stepped out of the night to claim lives.

In this person, He Ao felt a familiar aura.

He raised the two Gauss Guns in his hands.

The next second, the man’s figure suddenly disappeared.

At the same time, two gunshots thundered forth.

These two bullets almost simultaneously appeared in front of the man.

He Ao had predicted the man’s position.

But He Ao did not have the man’s combat model, prediction was all based on experience, and it was not entirely accurate.

Therefore, He Ao fired two shots, targeting the two positions he had predicted.

The man violently contracted his body, one bullet grazing his shoulder, the other burying itself in his left chest.

The massive impact momentarily hindered the man’s pace.

While shooting, He Ao had already rolled backwards, increasing the distance between himself and the man.

But before he could come to a complete stop, he immediately rolled toward the other side.

The next second, a bullet hit where his feet had just paused, shattering the cement floor.

A sniper.

And as He Ao completed his roll and just steadied himself, the lean man’s attack followed in hot pursuit.

At this moment, He Ao finally realized where the man’s sense of familiarity came from.

The madness and desire for killing in the man’s eyes, He Ao had experienced it too—on that clone of Hu Wen in the main world.

Hu Wen’s Talent Sequence seemed to be ’Ruthless Bandit’, and the man before him should be a Ruthless Bandit as well.

Moreover, the mental state of the man before him was probably similar to Hu Wen’s, showing signs of frenzy.

At this time, both Gauss Guns had already fired a shot and were charging up.

A sharp alloy dagger appeared in the man’s hand, slashing towards He Ao’s neck.

In that instant, He Ao activated Super Memory.

Tremendous power filled He Ao’s body in an instant, his physique suddenly tensed, and with a leap backwards, he evaded the man’s attack.

By this time, the Gauss Guns had finished charging, the sharp bullets cutting through the void, striking the man’s body.

These two shots were fired at close range, plunging into the man’s body and knocking him backward with great force.

He Ao and the man nearly landed on the ground simultaneously.

The man straightened up and forcibly yanked out the three bullets that had entered his body, blood with a red glow splattering out.

But to him, these three wounds were merely superficial, and he raised his hand in which the alloy dagger danced a circle.

"You’ve got something," he said.

He looked at He Ao with a smile, "Is this power obtained from some Evil God? No wonder I was told to be extra cautious with you guys, you clever researchers are truly unpredictable."

Meanwhile, the figures of several mercenaries became visible around, their guns aimed at He Ao; there were ten people in total, the leader was a middle-aged man wearing electronic glasses, probably all the remaining mercenaries.

He Ao was somewhat surprised by these mercenaries; despite the high casualties, they hadn’t collapsed.

This proved that this team must be the elite of the elite.

And to hire such a team, the resources and money spent must have been substantial.

He Ao turned his attention back to the lean man before him.

The man’s overall quality was even stronger than Hu Wen’s; even with the physical attributes He Ao gained from activating Super Memory, he was only just comparable to this guy’s physical prowess.

He currently had no weapons on him capable of inflicting heavy damage to a C-level, and he was still carrying Jess’s serious injury.

A quick battle had to be decisive.

At this moment, the surrounding mercenary squad also raised their guns and aimed at him, pulling their triggers.
