Chapter 512: Chapter 512: Street under the Shadow (Big Chapter for Monthly Tickets)
Nuke Street
He Ao looked at his phone to check the time, it was four fifty in the afternoon.
He raised his foot and stepped into the midst of Nuke Street.
It was a bustling commercial street made up of one main thoroughfare and several smaller side streets.
The streets were teeming with people, very lively indeed.
That such a famous street had never appeared in the photos of Lani and Gade was indeed a point worthy of suspicion.
It was highly likely that the World Tree’s Rodan branch was on one of the side streets off this busy commercial thoroughfare.
The greater is hidden within the marketplace.
In a place as bustling as this, one might subconsciously think that no one would set up an intelligence organization’s branch here.
Instead, this made it a safe location.
Of course, the agents of the World Tree would have to be careful when coming and going to avoid being noticed by the people around them.
To avoid drawing attention to its uniqueness, He Ao guessed that the World Tree’s branch would choose a street with less pedestrian traffic.
He Ao walked along the main street, his gaze sweeping over all the side streets, but he found none with buildings that looked suspicious.
Was he really going to search each street one by one?
He Ao looked up into the sky; the sun was gradually sinking toward the west.
Although the sunlight was still bright, it was approaching evening.
From the information gathered earlier, the Divine Being known as ’Mysterious Shadow,’ who claimed to be the ruler of the eternal night, would have its powers most active after nightfall.
Similarly, the arrival of nightfall would also be the most suitable time for the Primitive Church to conduct their rituals.
The reason there was no large-scale ritualistic death last night was because He Ao disrupted the Molt Shadow Club, drawing Moonlight’s attention and disrupting their plans.
However, He Ao didn’t believe that the Molt Shadow Club was the extent of the Primitive Church’s methods; Lani had never entered the Molt Shadow Club and yet still died due to a ritual.
Once nightfall came, if the Primitive Church initiated a ritual through other means, bolstered by the power of a Divine Being, He Ao wasn’t certain he could easily deal with them.
Therefore, it was best to find the Rodan branch of the World Tree, which was also the residence of those contaminated believers of the Primitive Church, before dark.
He Ao looked again at the side streets he had already observed and fell into deep thought.
Images of each street passed through his mind.
He shouldn’t have missed any streets.
He counted the number of streets in his memory, and it seemed there were a total of seventeen side streets off the whole of Nuke Street.
Seventeen streets, all of which he had looked at closely.
Wait a minute,
He Ao paused, took out his phone, opened the map application, and then, located his position here on Nuke Street and started counting the surrounding side streets one by one.
Sixteen, seventeen... eighteen.
Nuke Street had a total of eighteen side streets.
He Ao stopped his motions and looked again at the bustling street before him. He had checked all of the streets he could remember on Nuke Street; there were only seventeen streets, no eighteenth street.
But the map in his hand clearly showed eighteen streets.
Either the map was outdated and incorrect, or there was something wrong with him.
Moreover, he couldn’t recall which of the seventeen streets he had counted differed from the eighteen on the map.
After a moment of thought, he went back to Nuke Street and started counting the streets one by one again, following the map on his phone.
One... two... four...
...seventeen... eighteen.
He Ao stopped walking and looked at the busy side street in front of him, bewildered.
Eighteen? Is that right?
Did I just miscount?
No, something is not right.
He Ao closed his eyes, carefully recalling the memory just now.
Although he counted eighteen streets, there were still only scenes of seventeen streets in his memory.
He lifted his foot again and began to count the streets one by one, this time in reverse order.
Eighteen... seventeen...
...four... two
He Ao’s steps came to a halt; he realized something was off, yet he couldn’t pinpoint the issue.
He moved back to the area behind the fourth street and activated his Super Memory.
In that instant, the reflection of the entire street appeared in his mind.
He passed the fourth street and then stopped in the space between the second and fourth streets.
The passersby came and went, their footsteps not halting in the slightest, as if there was nothing there.
In fact, a thought in He Ao’s mind also told him that there was nothing there.
However, within the sight of Super Memory, the reflection of a lonely and deserted alley was cast into He Ao’s mind.
The pitch-black shadow covered the surface of the street; even though it was sunny outside, not a trace of light touched the surface of this street.
On both sides of the street were shops with half-closed doors, all adorned with strange black tarpaulins.
This was the "disappeared" eighteenth street.
Nuke Street did have eighteen streets, but one of them was concealed by some force.
Thus, walking along the main street of Nuke Street, one could only "see" seventeen streets.
If one directly counted the number of streets, they would skip over this disappeared street and end up with the answer of eighteen streets.
But what He Ao was counting was not the number of streets; he was counting the number of streets that he recalled.
For ordinary people, their own memories are inevitably flawed, so counting in this way is unlikely to be accurate, and they would likely not trust the result they obtained.
So this was a very clever means of disruptive concealment, perhaps only someone with a specific ’invitation’ could enter this street.
But for He Ao, with his memory enhanced by Super Memory, his long-term habit of using Super Memory made him trust his own memory more.
Since the hidden street was not noticeable, there were only those seventeen streets in He Ao’s memory, prompting his suspicion about the number of streets.
In the end, he discovered this hidden street.
He Ao glanced at the pitch-black street in front of him and put away his phone.
——
The man with the brown little mustache sat at the mouth of a side street off Nuke Street, glancing at the other side of Nuke Street under the cover of the newspaper in his hands.
A youth from Central Earth, looking quite young and standing upright, was standing across from him, staring at something.
Although there seemed to be nothing across the street, the youth appeared to be staring intently at some complex scene.
The man kept his eyes on the youth’s silhouette, observing as the youth put away his phone, seeming to be preparing to move forward.
A woman pushing a baby stroller passed behind the youth, obscuring his figure.
The man’s vision blurred for a moment.
By the time the woman had passed, the youth was no longer in the man’s field of view.
The man paused, then discreetly folded the newspaper, took out his phone, and slowly stood up.
He looked up at his surroundings, glanced at the nearby shop’s camera, then averted his gaze and turned into a hidden alley deep in the street.
At the same time, he opened his phone’s contact list and selected a number to call.
"Who do you need to contact that you would come to such a secluded place?"
An icy voice sounded in his ear.
In the corner of his eye, the youth from Central Earth with a well-proportioned figure was now standing quietly beside him.
He tensed up and immediately pulled out a silencer-equipped pistol from his pocket, aiming at the young man beside him.
Pu——
The muted sound of the gun rang out, and the bullet buried itself into the wall nearby.
He Ao pulled the bone sword from the man’s chest, allowing the blood to flow freely onto the ground.
He then retracted the bone sword back into the Pirate Treasure Box, watching the man with widened eyes, collapsing to the ground.
Why does everyone here like to fight and kill?
He Ao shook his head,
Can’t they obey the law?
He squatted down, looking at the phone that the man clutched in his other hand. The contact displayed on it was,
[Blood Mentor]
This name sounded somewhat familiar.
Then He Ao remembered, the C-level from the Daybreak that he had marked, his code name seemed to be ’Blood Apprentice’.
Was this man from the Daybreak?
He Ao pondered for a moment, took out the bone sword, and pried open the man’s clothes, searching his pockets. He didn’t find a Daybreak identification card, but a circular emblem fell out of the man’s pocket.
It was a brownish-red triangular crown emblem.
He Ao picked up the emblem, examining it closely.
The craftsmanship of the emblem was exquisite; the crown’s brownish-red color wasn’t painted on, it consisted of a certain type of brownish-red gemstone, and the three tips of the crown were each inlaid with a tiny emerald.
It didn’t look like something a person of ordinary means could possess.
He Ao looked at the man’s dilated eyes.
Brownish-red pupils.
Things seemed to be getting interesting.
He tossed the emblem back onto the man’s body and took a photo to send to the gendarmerie captain.
Then he removed the phone from the man’s grip, jotting down the ’Blood Mentor’s’ phone number while extracting the SIM card.
Once all this was done, he placed the phone back on the man’s body and exited the alley.
In the corner at the end of the alley, there was a cone marking construction ahead.
He picked up the cone, blocking the alley entrance, dusted off his hands ensuring there were no bloodstains, and once more crossed the street to arrive at the hidden entrance of a secret street.
Dark shadows loomed before him.
He lifted his leg gently, stepping forward.
As he crossed the line between this street and the main street, the noisy clamor that used to echo in He Ao’s ears was suddenly silenced, quieting down in an instant.
The noise hadn’t disappeared, however, it had become like a faint static, barely noticeable.
Threads of cold wind brushed He Ao’s face.
Mute——
Several crows with raspy cries flew across the sky.
He Ao disabled Super Memory.
The black cloth in front of the shop swayed with the breeze.
He Ao looked back, still able to see the crowd laughing and passing by on the main street outside.
The silent shadows seemed to divide this branching street from the outside area into different worlds.
The closed doors of the shops on both sides suggested their owners had long gone, or as though they could return at any moment.
He Ao walked on the cold concrete road, step by step, heading deeper into the street.
This street wasn’t long, but it had a rather large winding curve, preventing one from seeing the scene at the end of the street at a glance.
And as He Ao turned that corner, a small iron gate wedged between shops appeared before him, instantly capturing his attention.
In fact, just in terms of style and size, this small iron gate was not unique, and was no different from the other little doors tucked away among the shops on the street.
People lived on this kind of old street as well, and through this small iron gate, as well as the porch behind it, one could reach a small courtyard where people resided. Such small gates were commonly seen throughout Eren City and were not particularly unusual.
However, the small gate in front of He Ao was unlike the ordinary ones; it was nearly completely covered by pitch-black shadows, making it difficult to discern its color from a distance.
This made the small gate all the more jarring on this shadow-drenched street.
In fact, from the choice of location, it was evident that World Tree had initially selected the Rodan branch with concealment in mind.
The shadow that enveloped this street was probably a result of the Advent of ’Mysterious Shadow’ afterwards.
The surrounding air grew even colder.
As He Ao approached the shadow-covered gate, he faintly felt that the temperature around him had dropped to around two or three degrees.
Outside was still cloaked in warm sunlight, while here it was as cold as the depths of a silent night.
The small gate was ajar and not closed, and with a gentle push from He Ao, accompanied by a squeaking sound, the old gate slowly opened.
First to catch He Ao’s eye was a relatively spacious porch, which is generally formed by the walls of shops on both sides. Only past this porch could one see the small courtyard and living areas inside the gate.
Ahead, the shadows became even darker.
He Ao quickly passed through the porch, arriving in front of the courtyard behind it.
The pitch-black shadows covered the entire courtyard as if night had fallen at that very moment.
He Ao looked up; the sun in the sky was still shining brilliantly, while not a single ray of light could be seen in the yard.
Just before stepping into the courtyard, He Ao halted, lowering his head to look at the ground beneath him.
There, under the veil of shadow, was a footprint.
A footprint stamped into the concrete.
Although the shadows almost obscured He Ao’s vision, he could see that the footprint was fresh, without any accumulation of dirt, as if it had been made just a few days ago.
The person who left the footprint had controlled their strength so well that it was clear yet had not damaged the concrete surface underneath, cracking the ground.
A master indeed.
He Ao raised his head, looking deeper into the courtyard.
In the deepest part of the shadows, the outline of a five-story building was faintly discernible.
He lowered his head again, giving the footprint before him another look.
A top-tier D-level or a C-level could have the ability to leave such a footprint, but judging from the control of force and the refinement of this one, it was very likely left by a C-level.
Would the folks at World Tree play around leaving footprints at their own doorstep?
Unlikely.
And this footprint was very fresh, directly facing the location of the World Tree branch, more like some kind of provocation.
Had some ’visitor’ come here in the past few days?
But in the records left by Gade, there was no mention of any ’visitors’.
Such a powerful C-level, arriving at the doorstep and making a provocation, Gade should not be unaware.
Either the visitor had come before the arrival of Evil God’s power, and Gade hadn’t recorded it,
or the visitor had come after the arrival of the Evil God’s power, when Gade was contaminated, controlled, and lost consciousness.
It was not clear if this C-level was friend or foe, or whether they had been tainted by the power of the Evil God.
He Ao drew a bone sword from the Pirate Treasure Box, stepping into that pitch-black shadow.
After advancing in both Martial Arts and Super Memory, he had not yet tried to assess just how far his power had progressed.
He already had a basic evaluation of the strength of the Primitive Church.
The roar of a train faintly echoed in He Ao’s ears, the sound of the Velora in operation.
Strands of distorted praise wafted from the building, carrying with them a strange madness that invaded He Ao’s mind.
