Chapter 451: Chapter 451: Meeting an Old Friend in a Foreign Place
The night sky gradually dissipated, with a hint of dawn’s fish-belly white emerging in the distance.
He Ao sat in the off-road vehicle, watching the sunrise with his daughter.
At this moment, the old clan leader was leading the Andavi family to search for any remaining Phantom Mushrooms. The search could last a week or even months, but it was no longer He Ao’s concern.
According to Ennie, she and the old clan leader had also seen that enormous exotic beast from afar, its massive body nearly causing her to lose her voice in fright.
However, they simulated the monster’s movement trajectory and estimated He Ao’s possible location, then made their way around from another direction.
Hearing this, He Ao rubbed his daughter’s head and said nothing.
The glow of dawn slowly seeped through the gaps of the distant mountains, eventually laying across the land like a smooth piece of satin, which resembled a desolate ruin.
A small squirrel emerged from the underbrush, standing upright and looking over the now-ruined area of the Phantom Mushrooms.
It glanced around, seemingly hesitant about something, but finally, it took a tentative step with a little foot onto the edge of the devastation.
The early morning breeze carried the scent of the dawn. The once lethal temptations that filled the entire area were now just dissipating winds, and everything was as calm as an ordinary morning.
The little squirrel bent down, beginning to explore amidst the ruins.
And in the midst of this quiet breath of wind, a gurgling noise reached He Ao’s ears.
"Hungry?"
He Ao looked at the girl beside him and asked with a soft laugh.
With her face turning red, Ennie blinked and then nodded slightly, like a pecking chicken.
He Ao stood up, rummaged through the off-road vehicle, and found a small can of distilled liquor and a small bottle of coarse salt. He took the liquor, jumped down from the vehicle, and said, "Come on, Dad’s going to take you for some good food."
Ennie followed her father, looking somewhat perplexed.
He Ao found a stream by following the sound of flowing water in the forest; the streams in the wilderness were almost crystal clear, with just a bit too many piranhas.
However, the segment of the stream He Ao had found didn’t have many piranhas, and a white-scaled fish was slowly rising to the water’s surface.
He Ao raised his short sword and threw it with a sharp flash of light. Before the fish could react, it was skewered in the stream.
He Ao walked over, pulled out the hilt of the short sword that had sunk into the stream, and also picked up the fish it had pierced.
He didn’t know the scientific name of this fish. The Wilderness Wanderers near Dawn City called it "white fish," a carnivorous species that fed on small fish or shrimps in the water. It had few bones but tender flesh.
He Ao pulled out the white fish and tossed it to Ennie, asking her to wait by the stream.
Having followed the old clan leader all around the previous night, Ennie had already learned how to use a gun. Although her aim wasn’t accurate, she had begun to develop the ability to protect herself.
And the forest He Ao chose for them was quiet and without many dangerous beasts.
Then He Ao ventured into the forest and, following Ronald’s experience from his memories, found a beehive and took a piece of honeycomb.
He continued to search in the forest, found some wild fragrant plants, and was fortunate enough to find a wild pepper tree.
He Ao returned to the stream with these items, opened up the fish’s belly with his short sword, made some decorative cuts, and crushed the spices to mix with the distilled liquor into a marinade. Then he applied the marinade to the fish, letting it cure for twenty minutes.
After that, he collected several stones, found some dry grass, twigs, and some wood logs, and started a fire. He suspended the fish over the fire, continuously basting it with honey as it roasted.
As the radiant sun rose in the sky and the bright sunlight filtered through the swaying leaves, casting scattered spots of light, the enticing aroma began to rise from He Ao’s grilled fish.
Ennie crouched beside He Ao, supporting her little face with both hands, staring blankly at her father at work.
The fluttering tree leaves reflected in her eyes, animated by the morning’s gentle breeze.
"Dad, you’re amazing," the little girl said, dazed.
"Only now you’ve noticed?"
He Ao smiled, turning the stick that skewered the fish to ensure an even heat across the cooking fish.
The babbling stream added nature’s music alongside the crackling flames.
Ennie simply watched her father’s profile and giggled foolishly.
After eating the grilled fish, He Ao took Ennie for a stroll in the forest.
Then, driving the off-road vehicle, they followed the road of the Phantom Mushroom area and headed south. The vehicle didn’t travel fast as He Ao intentionally showed his daughter the magnificent landscape of the wilderness.
It wasn’t until night began to fall that He Ao reached the next Wanderer Camp.
This camp was also one of the Wilderness Wanderer forces that participated in the siege of the Phantom Mushrooms. They had watched He Ao approaching from a distance, hoisting their flags and cheering loudly.
This was the respect the Wilderness Wanderer had for the strong, and also the respect they had for He Ao’s act of venturing alone into the Phantom Mushroom area, even facing a B-level exotic beast.
Even if He Ao didn’t possess great strength, the mere courage to venture into the most dangerous region alone was worthy of these Wilderness Wanderers’ respect.
By association, Ennie, who was beside He Ao, also received cheers.
Before He Ao stopped at this camp, some enthusiastic individuals even ran out, wanting to lift He Ao and Ennie into the air.
But this was stopped by He Ao; he pushed away all the men surrounding his daughter, one by one.
In last night’s "operation," the defensive line of Wilderness Wanderer around the perimeter had already been breached by the time the B-level exotic beast arrived.
These Wilderness Wanderers defending the perimeter thought the plan had failed and were ready to pack up and run, only to find out that the plan succeeded and the Phantom Mushrooms had been cleared.
The core figure who could complete the entire plan was none other than "Pete," which instantaneously made He Ao the most prominent figure among these Wilderness Wanderer forces.
Unseen, He Ao found that he had gained extremely high prestige among these Wilderness Wanderer.
And it was foreseeable that as news of his deeds spread, this prestige would continue to ferment and grow.
He Ao declined the enthusiastic hospitality of the Leader of the Wanderer Camp and walked towards the camp’s trading hall.
Since the Wanderer Camp in the Phantom Mushroom area had been destroyed, the Wanderer Camp He Ao arrived at now became the most prosperous nearby.
Here, there were not only the camp’s own Wilderness Wanderers but also a large number of Wilderness Hunters who came here to trade, as well as other families’ and camps’ Wilderness Wanderers.
When the Andavi family did not call together the surrounding Leaders and chieftains, this was the place that gathered the most Wilderness Wanderer forces in the area and was the most informed.
He Ao had the Leader of the Wanderer Camp set up a podium for him in the most conspicuous spot of the Wilderness Wanderer trading hall.
Then he stepped onto the podium and began talking about the "Wilderness Wanderer Immigration Act" of Dawn City.
This time was different from his last speech.
Last time he was unknown, just a newcomer, though this time he was a hero who saved the entire wilderness. His prestige alone had already surpassed that of the old chieftain of the Andavi family.
Even though only two days had passed.
"My friends in Dawn City have brought me news of a ’special act’—this act is unrelated to any city dweller, unrelated to any consortium, it is a bill intimately connected to the Wilderness Wanderers..."
...
"The boundary between Wilderness Wanderers and Federation Citizens has been broken—all Wilderness Wanderers can now have a citizen’s identity in Dawn City, and thereby possess the Citizen status within the Federation,"
He Ao stood at the podium, concluding his speech, "Hunger, disease, and the era of madness are passing, and we shall welcome a brighter future, Divine Beings bless all Wilderness Wanderers."
"Good!"
Ennie watched her father standing under the spotlight, clapping frantically.
Her applause sparked even more, and for a moment, thunderous applause filled the entire trading hall.
He Ao smiled, bowed in thanks, and stepped down from the podium.
He didn’t know how many people would truly believe in the existence of this act, but as long as one person tried it, the news would eventually spread throughout the nearby wilderness.
And those Wilderness Wanderers entering Dawn City would gradually become a force that could not be ignored.
After finishing his speech, He Ao turned down the throngs of Wilderness Wanderer girls coming over, took his daughter by the hand, and left the trading hall through the back door.
Then they sneaked back to their SUV.
He Ao drove the SUV into a thicket beside the Wilderness Wanderer camp.
"Dad, what are we doing here?"
Ennie looked around with some confusion. It was the dark night around them, with only the sounds of rustling grass as if night-roaming animals were moving about.
"Waiting for someone."
He Ao’s demeanor was calm as he gazed forward.
In the deepness of the night, at the end of the road, a long convoy slowly approached.
On the leading, armed SUV that was making way, a somewhat aged emblem was branded.
It was the Stars City Emblem.
